Wilderness #6

Black Powder Justice

Rate this book

In 1828, few white men dared to venture into the immense, unsettled region west of the Mississippi. And of those who did, only courageous men like Nathaniel King had the skills and strength to survive the harsh, frozen wilderness. But when three vicious trappers ambushed him and kidnapped his pregnant wife, Winona, King faced the greatest challenge of his life. For if Nate did not rescue Winona and their unborn child, the life he had worked so hard to build would be worthless.

Hard to believe it's been nearly two years since I finished book five of this series, glad to be jumping back in. I liked the initial setup of this one, was excited to see a different antagonist other than Blackfeet, but it ended up devolving into Nate squaring off against a group of Arapahoes. Not the best story to come back to, but when a series is fifty plus books long, not all are going to be great. On to the next one!

This story is of a tough mountain man. Nathaniel King is married to an Indian woman. His battle is to live Free.

The opening of the story takes place with a young couple. Simon Ward and his reluctant wife who had not wanted to go.

Simon had heard, while in the tavern, how beautiful the land was in the mountains out west.

As we get into the story it is a farce of high adventure mishaps.

The mishaps start when Simons wife, Felicity, is kidnapped as she goes to wash in a pool.

Simon has left her to explore but not to far away. When he turns to get Felicity he is devastated and franticly went into howling.

Nate was out tracking elk when he heard the anguished cry filled with misery.

Nate lived with the Shoshones over the years. They and his wife were his people. Nate had learned many skills.

Now Nate listened for the cry and went to see if he could help.
The help came by tracking. Nate realized the kidnappers were slavers.

Simon being a greenhorn got them into a number of scrapes.

In the meantime Nates wife was also kidnapped by another band. They were to join up with the first band.

The mishaps and adventure did hold my intrest. With a very unlikely ending. Suspending knowing things would not likely happen, but perhaps things did often happen that was incredible.
