This has been my least favorite of the Grant County series so far. It just didn't really click with me. I think a good way to describe it for me would be drawn out and repetitive. Also, this has been the most confused I have been so far when reading a Slaughter book.
Slaughter continues the trend of shocking subject matter and brutal descriptions. Her books are not for the faint of heart or queasy of stomach. Also, there are some potential triggers in this one - the biggest one being abortion. If you worry that delicate subject matter could greatly affect your enjoyment of a book, proceed with caution.
My biggest complaint about this book is that I could not keep all the characters straight. I am not sure exactly what it was - maybe the names were all too similar - but I just could not remember who was doing what. And, in the descriptions of the events, she was jumping from name to name to name so fast I could not keep up. This is one of the few times I can remember just giving up on names and focusing on the events. I figured if I had a good grasp on what was going on, it wouldn't matter who was doing it!
Fans of this series so far and Slaughter and general will hopefully not have the same experience I had. If you give it a shot, I hope you enjoy!

Twisty and Turny, with lots of investigating by my FAVORITE Character: JEFFREY!
When Chief Jeffrey Tolliver trips on a pipe sticking out of the ground while out walking with Coroner and Pediatrician Sara Linton, they find it unusual and make a discovery after doing a little digging. It’s that of a body buried in a box underground. Talk about a mood killer!
Upon investigating, Jeffrey and Detective Lena Adams find themselves at a Religious Community where the girl was from. Instead of feeling welcome upon arrival, the hairs on the backs of their necks stand up and more questions arise than answers.
“Faithless” is twisty turny thriller that completely kept my attention from the first chapter. It includes my favorite couple: Jeffrey and Sara. Admittedly, I LOVE Jeffrey and just kinda like Sara (if I’m being honest)... I simply don’t think Sara likes (ok loves) Jeffrey enough. I think she needs to get off of her high horse and realize that no one is perfect and that Jeffrey is pretty darn close! As for Lena, you break me girl but I have faith in you.
What happens to Chief Tolliver, Sara Linton and Detective Adams as they investigative the death of the girl they found buried in the box and those they think are responsible will make your heart leap out of your throat and will make you think twice about taking a stroll in the woods, and yet, you’ll continue to do it! Thanks for that Karin Slaughter!
Anyhow, this is my 6th Sara Linton novel - I’ve read 5 Grant County books and 1 Will Trent, as I started with “The Last Widow” and knew I had to go backwards! Let’s just say that I’m glad I did.

A smashing continuation of the series, Faithless has many meanings for the couple and the mystery within, as Sara and Jeffrey's love story has hit another obstacle because of his affair when they were married. The two are arguing in the woods by Sara's parent's house, when Jeffrey stumbles, taking Sara down too, across a pipe sticking out of the ground. They soon realize the ugly meaning of this pipe and scrabble and tear at the earth with their hands to release the person held below. Alas, it is too late.
Jeffrey soon traces the dead girl back to a farming/religious cult on the outskirts of Grant County. The members of this church include lots of former drug addicts, homeless and convicted felons who are being rehabilitated by the church. Slaughter surprises me continually with her knowledge of the disgusting depravity of the male psyche and the weakness of the female. In a world where men are given much power and women have little, is it any wonder that this disgusting ritual of abuser and abused continues its cycle.
The only reason I wouldn't give this 5 stars is that there is one false note in the story (to me). Sara's mother, Cathy, a devout Christian, is happy that Sara's sister, Tessa has decided to go to this church.What!!!!??? As they frantically dug the soil from what they hoped was something innocent, the shock at finding the young woman, dead, in a wooden coffin-like structure, was the beginning of a long and arduous case of tracking a brutal and dangerous killer.
The identity of the young woman led Jeffrey and Lena to a property on the boundary of Grant County, where soy was grown. Run by a church group, and worked by itinerant workers, most of them having a hidden past, Jeffrey's suspicions were raised. Investigating the family was normal procedure but when he and Lena went to a nearby bar, it was obvious something was wrong. Would Jeffrey and Lena uncover the secrets that were buried deep? And would they find the second young woman who had gone missing?
Faithless is the 5th in the Grant Count series by Karin Slaughter and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Fast paced and action packed, there were times of reminiscing, times of happiness, but with complete focus on the case. Frustration was immense as Jeffrey tried to find the answers he needed. I'm looking forward to #6 which is the last in this series. Highly recommended.

Jeffrey's sins of the past come back to stir up trouble between him and Sara. AS they walk around a lake and discuss their recent lack of intimacy, Jeffrey trips on something. As it turns out that something is sadly a young women in a box that had been buried in the ground. She has not been dead for long and Sara and Jeffery quickly start investigating her murder.
This book has many twist and turns which lead them to a secluded religious group that takes in runaways and parolees to work on their farm. The dead young woman is the daughter of one of the families. A strange family that closes ranks and does not really warm up to the idea of Sara and Lean being in positions of authority.
Secrets, abuse, and a twisted killer(s) fill the pages. This book was good mystery that continued the Grant County series which I have come to enjoy.

This book took me unfortunately months to read as I could not source the physical or audio, so it was consumed in irregular bursts on my desktop, thus prolonging it and most likely taking a star in my rating. My preferred format is listening to Karin Slaughter'sbooks. They are quite old and this library professional will not pay for audio!
I found this instalment was quite busy with lots of names and intertwined relatives to keep up with, which I'm never a fan of, but as always, I'll turn this around by enjoying the characters. A group of religious zealots are running a dodgy farming community, welcoming drifters and addicts to their fold. Of course all along the reader can't help but shake their heads at the crazy ideals, their judgmental ways of those who don't follow the almighty as they do.
A girl is found dead in the woods, buried alive. Sara, Jeffery and Lena becoming intricately involved in this oh so messy story which includes all types of abuse, a lot of this hidden behind religion and righteous awful people. Particularly their menfolk looking down upon women. Chief of Police Tolliver handling these crazies well knowing things are never as they seem.
The characters are what I love here. Jeffery and Sara coming together after his indiscretion, Sara finding it very hard to move on, never letting Jeffery forget what he did to her while navigating their newfound togetherness. Always there for her man, doing all she can in the
Lena and her terrible domestic violence situation, a woman that we assume should know better who has tragically become a statistic regardless of the fact she is an experienced detective with many years under her belt. The scenes where she helps a woman in the same situation are heartbreaking, as we witness these two women playing the game of mentor/survivor/victim. Another quality character is Nan, and her relationship with Lena always a source of comfort in Lena's tragic and messy life.
This series will also be gruesome, readers need to be aware of this, but KS fans will be aware of this. I am now one book away from Will Trent. How good is this?
Recommended to fans of the author, and those who don't mind some harsh and gritty reading.

Jeffrey and Sara are walking through the woods near her home when they stumbled upon a pipe coming up from underneath the ground. What lay beneath was heartbreaking, leading them into an investigation of a family who seems to have plenty of secrets. They're also leaders of a religious lifestyle that appears cult like.
This was a disturbing story that also explores the subject of domestic abuse. The investigation took some interesting turns, even though the field of suspects was narrow. Typical of this series, the story ends on a surprising and ominous note. I couldn't put this one down and am diving right into the final book.

This is the last book I need to read from the Grant County series featuring Sara Linton, Jeffrey Tolliver, and Lena Adams. I will miss this cast of characters.
Warnings: child imprisonment, domestic violence, drug use, religious violence based on Bible quotes by a crazy man.
I liked this but it bothered me that religion was used again to talk about crazy people. I know religion draws a lot of weirdos and nut cases to it but we're not all this way.
Other than that, of course, I enjoyed the gruesome story. It starts off with a young girl that knows her abductor and tells her to get in the box buried in the ground, burying her alive.

Holy shit! I found this one to be disturbing. The mystery/murder side of things was alarming but of course I couldn't stop turning the pages!
The characters are still growing on me. Can't say I think Jeffrey and Sara are making the best choices but love is blind right....
Lena is killing me. I want her to get her slice of happiness in life even if it is just a sliver. But she cannot catch a break. Partly because of her own inner turmoil.
I wish things ended differently. My heart broke for Terri.
On to #6.

I'm drawing a blank on how to express myself over this one. It was really long, and I'm annoyed that we get no real definite resolution over this installment's Big Bad (though it is somewhat implied), and honestly the third star is because of Lena's actions right at the end and how happy it made Jeffrey. Because it made me happy, too.

As a confirmed atheist with a bone in his craw for organized religions of any stripe and a lover of the mystery, police procedural and suspense thriller genres,FAITHLESS was an easy book for me to enjoy! A victim has been buried alive in the Georgia woods and the clues, such as they are, lead medical examiner Sara Linton and her on again-off again husband, police chief, Jeffrey Tolliver, in the direction of a serial killer and a family church (read “religious cult) operating a successful local farm.
Rape, domestic violence, greed, sanctimonious self-righteousness, homophobia, patriarchy and macho sexism … FAITHLESS pushes all of the right buttons and Ms Slaughter has made no effort to temper her disdain for organized religions and the cults and egregious evil that they foster. A compelling thriller that will hold your interest from opening paragraph to closing climax. Well done, Ms Slaughter. I’m definitely a continuing fan.

4.5 continuing saga stars
OK, I know there is just one left in series here! That's a little bittersweet, but I'm happy to know that Sara Linton's character continues on to the next series.
This one starts out with a bang as Sara and Jeffrey stumble across a box in the ground and the remains of a young woman inside. Who is she and who was responsible for her horrible death?
Jeffrey and Lena tackle this case and it all seems to trace back to a religious commune that seems rather cultish. Will they get to to bottom before more women turn up dead? Lots of twists and turns in this one and some surprises that I did not see coming. I must say that I was so happy with how Lena's life changed at the end of this one.
This was another good installment in this story arc and I'm so impressed at how Karin Slaughter figures out new crimes to challenge this group. I'm off to see if #6 is available from the library.

This was another roller coaster. Sometimes hard to keep track of all the characters.
With each book, Jeffrey and Sara are growing on me. I love that they are not the perfect couple. They argue. Her parents are great too. Lena, I don't know if she will ever have a Happy Ever After.
Some parts of this book were quite heartbreaking. Terri, my heart bled for her.

Faithless is good but not as great as its predecessor.
A young girl is found dead and poisoned by Jeffrey and Sara while they're out walking while fighting through the woods (what's new, right?).
Jeffrey has recently moved in with Sara when he discovers he might have Hepatitis C after his one indiscretion years ago. Predictably, Sara is upset. She might be infected as well and carrying the virus without knowing it. She wants Jeffrey to be tested again (her cousin has already done a test) when they stumble onto an uneven area making them lose their balance. Soon, they both realize something is under the dirt. After more digging, they find a box and the remains of a young woman. The young woman is Genie, she's part of a weird family with strong religious beliefs were men make decisions and women follow them without questions.
As I said before, I liked Faithless. It had a clever plot with enough action to keep me interested. Unusually, there were not a lot of suspects so it was not difficult to pinpoint the culprit. Yet, it didn't take anything away from the story.
I still love Sara. I think she's brilliant yet not perfect. She's trying very hard to forgive Jeffrey and move forward. I'm slightly terrified as to what's to come up next in the last book. Karin left us with a big foreshadowing at the end of the novel.
I still hate Lena. She has learned nothing. I think Jon Snow knows more than she does. She's nothing but trouble for Sara and Jeffrey as well as for Nan and Greg. Why is she still part of this series???? I can't stand her. She is NOT a good cop. She isn't a good investigator or and definitely not a nice person.
One thing that surprised was some of the prejudices the author brings up into this novel. As an example:
"people tended to homeschool for two reasons: to keep their white children away from minorities or to make sure their kids weren’t taught anything other than creationism and abstinence."
I know plenty of people who are homeschool and is for neither of those reasons (avoiding bullies being the most common) but I digress.....
My friend told me I should start the Will Trent series before I read the last book since both series will connect. So I'm doing just that.

Hmm. I’m not really sure what to say about this entry other than that it was just okay. It was definitely the weakest in the Grant County series, and even though the first few books were great, I feel like most of the characters are starting to run out of steam.
The book starts off with Jeffery and Sara arguing again (no surprise there) until one of them trips on a pipe sticking out of the ground. After digging it out, they find that it is connected to a meticulously designed box. The box contains something that jumpstarts the next case.
We spend the rest of the book with the pair and their police cohorts searching the county for clues.
The story was fairly ordinary and had some obvious revelations towards the end. I would say this series is known for that, but there are usually a few shocking revelations thrown in. The procedural elements are very ho-hum; most of the suspects are easy to spot, and the twists were not all that thrilling.
That’s pretty much it. No highs and no lows; just okay.

This is the first I've read of any Karin Slaughter books. Quite a few GR friends are reading her thrillers so when I saw this audio book at the library I grabbed it on a whim. Faithless is #5 in the series about victims getting buried alive with a religious twist. I realized as I listened to the book that a lot had happened in the previous 4 books in the series that I should have read first.
I like the main characters, Sara and Jeffrey. There are so many characters, however, that it's hard to keep track of them all. I did like the plot, but felt the book was too wordy and could have used some editing. "I'm sorry" was said quite too frequently.
Good enough that I will start with the first in the series.

Low key wanted more Sarah in this one. I really “enjoy” (if you can even use that word when saying this) the coroner stuff. Definitely am going to look more into forensic thrillers.

I didn't really like this one. It was too straight-forward, with hardly any subterfuge in the plot. Actually a bit boring, if I'm being honest! Interestingly, this is the only Grant County novel I've read with my eyeballs (instead of with my ears), which may have influenced my reading experience.

It may have taken we awhile to finish this book, but that had nothing to do with the story. Although the story line was disturbing, I enjoyed the telling of it. Sara and Jeffrey have an amazing relationship. They have been through so much and yet continue to stick together. This book centered around a sort of church cult and it makes you wonder about the non-fiction churches out there. The treatment the girls endured was awful. I was able to determine who the "bad guy" was long before Sara and Jeff, but it didn't ruin the story. I am a bit sick of Lena, though. She continues to act so strong yet so weak and it gets irritating. Hopefully things will look up in the next book.

OK... listened to this one straight through.... now on to the final Grant County book so I can pick back up on the Will Trent series. I really enjoyed this one although I still cringe A LOT at the very descriptive crime scenes. Once scene toward the end seemed to drag out a long time and was cringy the whole time. My jaw ached afterwards. Pun intended if you've read the book...

I love this book.
It is the fifth in the Grant Series, following Dr Sara Linton and her husband, Police Chief Jeffrey Tolliver. This book starts with Sara and Jeffrey arguing (as usual) in the forest behind Sara's parent's house around the lake. Jeffrey's past is catching up with him again, as he hears devastating news from the woman he cheated on Sara with. Whilst arguing, the pair come across a body buried in the ground beneath them. This story follows the investigation to find out who killed her and why, leading us to a religious family on the outskirts of the town.
The family are devout Christians running a Soy farm, that employs ex cons and down-and-outs that need help. Slightly extreme in their beliefs, they are viewed by the outside as more of a cult, and thus suspicion falls wholly on them when the body is discovered to be one of their own.
I enjoyed this one, as I do every Slaughter book. It dealt really well with religious ignorance, family dynamics, domestic abuse and so much more. There is violence and gore, and plenty of people are hurt or killed along the way, but it all adds up to a really good crime thriller. It touches on insurance fraud as well, just for good measure.
Sara and Jeffrey's relationship is further explored here, as they have to deal with this new obstacle that Jeffrey has brought into their lives. I love S & J, they are the original Slaughter couple and how ever much I go on about it, I am 100% sure of my allegiance to Jeffrey over Will. They keep overcoming everything that is thrown at them, most of it is, admittedly, Jeffrey's fault. But they get stronger each time.
When I finished this book, I felt sad, and frustrated and annoyed....... Even though I loved it. The problem I have is that I have read this series, and I know what is coming in the next one. And I hate that I have that to come next. I mention in almost all of my Grant Country Series reviews how much I hate Lena, and it is never more than in this and the next book. I HATE HER! :)
Anyway, I would 100% recommend this to Slaughter fans, Thriller fans, those who like a good mystery involving a 'cult'.

5 stars! I LOVE THIS SERIES! Once again Karin Slaughter starts off with a bang in Faithless and I couldn’t stop until I was done.
I was happy we got to see Sara and Jeffrey’s relationship progress in this one. Another thing that I would like to note is how close Nan and Lena have become. I think watching their relationship form and grow has been great. They both loved Sybil and to see them living together and becoming friends I think has been really great.
I also would like to say how much I think Lena has grown throughout the series and especially in this book. She has been through SO much and I think Jeffrey needs her on the force just as bad as she needs to be on the force. They have that love/hate brother sister relationship that is humorous but serious and Slaughter does a great job at showing how Lena has grown not only on her own but with Jeffrey as well.
I cannot say enough positive things about this series. It has taken the #1 spot on my favorite series list and I think anyone who loves a good crime thriller should definitely take the time to read this series! Can’t wait to start the next one!

I couldn't get enough of Lena, Jeffrey and Sara. Lena herself was a big puzzle, every book in this series revealed a tiny bit of her.
The crime in this book wasn't that spectacular but the true heroes were Jeffrey and Lena. They did the impossible to crack the case.
I could see Lena's transformation from the first book till this one. The struggles and trauma she had gone through was heart-breaking and devastating. I can't wait to see how the series going to end.

Of course Slaughter does a great job (as usual) of focusing on several different characters, while still connecting them all to a central theme, and solving a crime somewhere in between. This installment had a heavy focus on abusive relationships.
The thing I love about Sarah, and all of Slaughters characters, is that they are so nuanced. There are times when Sarah is throwing a fit and I'm rooting her on like the captain of her cheer squad. And there are other times when I see where she is coming from, but I want to tell her to stop being so stubborn, or to let other people help her. She feels like a friend. She's not all good or all bad, she's just human. That's why Slaughter's writing is so special.
Love it, read this DAMN series if you haven't already!

This is one of those that starts a little slow but gains speed and interest. The twist at the end got me and also broke my heart. I'm happy Lena has found a way to deal with her abuse, even if it is in a more cowardly way that I would expect from her.
