This was quite terrible: boring characters, lacking plot, and so much violence with no reason! I do like some violence in books and graphic-novels if done well (Battle Royale is my all-time favorite manga series), but in this one it was so random, it didn't really make sense.
As you probably understood, I'm not going to continue this series, even though I have the next 3 volumes here in front of me, which I borrowed from the library together with the first one.

This was just really middling. A guy named Yuri ends up joining this girl after she helps him hide his mother's body that he played a role in her death. Light gore and thriller stuff ensues as the girl named Anna, Yuri, and also Mitsuba, who is another boy saved by Anna, go around saving people and killing bad people from Anna's dad's cult. It's like one of those gory revenge manga but WAY toned down. There is a bit of a mystery and psychological element as Anna shows up in people's dreams as a past version of herself before meeting them as well as her general whole deal. Her mystery is ok. She's meant to be this enigmatic figure that you slowly learn about and it sorta works but also makes her sometimes more of a force or narrative object than an actual character. The character dynamics are so-so with the only really interesting character being Anna and even then she’s more enigmatic than a real character. Yuri is just a wet noodle and Mitsuba plays this bad-boy straight man who’s way more likable than Yuri because he commits to things and is more action-forward in what is an action manga. But again the action and thriller elements are played quite safely leading it to not be very exciting.
The art is fine. It's not amazing but it's not terrible. The scanlation does a terrible job at the colors brightening everything to the point of losing a lot of the screentones and grays. I can't tell if it's a deliberate choice on the mangaka or the magazine but a lot of the gore is obscured or hidden by the paneling. I don't think it would've added much but it does make it feel like the manga is holding back its punches on what seems to be one of its draws. It’s like this is meant to be an action revenge manga but for younger teens which just doesn’t really work here.

The drawings were great. The story was lacking cohesion. You walked into the middle of the scene but there wasn't enough backstory to keep you interested in all the blood, guts and assorted gore that were happening going forward. Anne is the rambo-esque teen who wants to kill her father, apparently the head of an extremest terrorist group. Although she can seemingly take them all out single-handedly, she recruits a couple of reluctant members. Yuri, who killed his mother, maybe, because she had been sexually abusing him (maybe) since he was a small child, and Mitsuba, whose family is murdered and he wants revenge. But they don't really mesh. It didn't appeal to be enough to want to keep reading.

Damn, I wasn't sure what to think about this manga at first. The plot is over-the-top like something an edgy sixth-grader would write but it drew me in. All the characters are completely screwed up in the head and the story made me sick to my stomach a few times. I was torn between hating these people and sympathizing with them. I just wasn't sure how to feel. The thing is though, it worked. It didn't feel manipulative or like the author couldn't decide where to go and left me feeling genuinely intrigued by the end, even if the plot is a little bit ridiculous. Totally going to read the next volume if I get the chance.0

I keep trying to read manga, but I just don't identify. Hot drawings, but in the whole book (yes, I did finish the first volume), I got lost and didn't identify with the characters. The various unusual traits of manga take me out of the story, and there's this something that's lost in translation for me. The story feels weak, the genders seem overly heightened, the writing seems off - I just don't get it... As much as I'd love to frame some of the full-page drawings, I can't bring myself to start the next volume of the series. But I really think it's me.

Anne Freaks vol 1 was pretty good. Killer teens. We first meet the truly sweet Yuri while he's attempting to clandestinely bury the corpse of his mother. *g* There's Mitsuba, who's somewhat excitable and I don't care about yet, and the cool and sociopathic Anna herself, who wants them to help her kill her father. Ah, insanity. I think the art is nice, though the boys' heads look a bit weird to me at times.

This book was my first manga book. I though it was going to be really weird because my friend said it was about a psycho killer. But it turns out I really really liked it.

I didn't know why I read it. This isn't my cup of tea. I hated reading it from beginning to end but I couldn't stop.

Ugh why did the ending have to be darn abrupt?!?! 😡😡😡😡

Anyways it’s about a “bae” murderer Anna who pretty much partners up with a guy Yuri who drops out of school and Mitsuba who’s family got killed by a certain cult called the Kakusei Group , joins in her rampant killings. That also includes the pastor (ex cult member of that group) and Moe (who loved her mother and trained Anna from an early age). I have to say character development in this old skool manga was good enough but I think I have to give huge credit though to the character Nishikama cause my god, she is a badass inspector that I hardly see in cop action stories. I just wish though that the whole manga wasn’t rushed because I see it as a potential to be something that any action genre fan would enjoy!

Regardless it is worth the read for anyone who isn’t afraid of gore to check out!

I haven't decided whether I like this story yet, but so far it is clear, the characters are distinct and the art is reasonably good. There are three more volumes.
