At long last, the book that zombie fans have been clamoring for - the original Deadworld series as illustrated by Vince Locke. Out of print for over a decade, the early Deadworld helped to launch the zombie craze. In addition to the first seven issues of the original series, this first volume will be a collection of Vince Locke artwork including pinups, covers, and design elements, and features an original eight-page Deadworld story rendered by Vince
Note: I actually read the original Deadworld Tradepaperback, but it included the first seven issues of the original series just like this volume.
This series is The Walking Dead about 20 years before there was a Walking Dead. The series is very similar with a group of humans fighting to survive the Zombie Apocalypse, with a few twists. This apocalypse is supernatural in nature, and along with the traditional zombies we have intelligent zombies that speak, use tools, etc. and are basically humanoid undead. There are also demons running around, which have something to do with how the zombies were unleashed to begin with (I wont spoil it here.) There's even a "King Zombie" who has the power to control the others and is very smart. Even he's under the control of..something, which isn't explained in this volume.
The art looks primitive at first glance, but the more you examine it you pick up several nuances. The series has some truly horrific scenes and they are illustrated in disturbing fashion, but there are also humorous moments portrayed through the art as well. Vince Locke artwork is very original and something to see.
Stuart Kerr is also an underrated author, and really, if you're a walking dead fan you should check this series off. Just remember when you're reading and think "this is a walking dead ripoff", that it came along way before TWD.
Long, long, LONG before The Walking Dead, there was Deadworld. This is one of the best, and sadly little known, zombie comic series of all time. Even with it being plagued with problems (it jumped to four different publishers last I knew) and quality that started to diminish as it went on, it still started off very strong and is well worth the read in its entirety, but especially this collection of early issues, all of which are awesome.
While this may not be the first zombie comic book ever, it was the first with any staying power. The art and writing are raw, and increase dramatically from issue to issue. It's dark and scummy and feels exactly how a zombie comic should feel. If you've read the walking dead, you need to read the comic that set the standard.
This is easily the most cookie cutter zombie apocalypse story, and wouldn't be surprised if its where it started.
The characters are godawful, all being classic annoying TV tropes, the dialogue reads like an 80s "hello I'm the white liberal character vs hello I'm the white conservative character who likes to call the other a pussy".
artwork is very good, intelligent zombies is a good idea, the gore is lacking but decent, and I lost interest pretty quickly.
