Lucy, stunning lead singer of a local band, is found dead on a beach.
Everyone assumes it’s suicide or accidental death. However, band member Tony thinks his sister Olivia might be involved. Not only was she insanely jealous of Lucy, but her husband Barry died in suspicious circumstances too.
Detective Sergeant Kerry Lawlor isn’t convinced its suicide either. The more she looks into the case, the more ‘accidental’ deaths she discovers. As she digs deeper, she finds motive and intrigue at every turn.
Following in Lucy’s footsteps is drop-dead gorgeous Roxie. Will Olivia’s jealousy strike again? Tony fears Roxie could be next.
Detectives Simon and Kerry are on the case. Will they intercept in the nick of time?
Out of your Head is Rose McClelland’s fifth novel and her second psychological thriller.
Her previous novel Under Your Skin became an Amazon No. 1 Bestseller in the UK and USA/ Canada. It also won Best Books of 2020 in Belfast Telegraph and with several online book bloggers.
Rose has also written two short plays which were performed in the Black Box theatre in Belfast. Find out more at: http://rosiesrag.blogspot.com
I love books about bands and the antics and angst that seems to envelope their lives and the impact that has on their personal lives. The author does an excellent job of weaving together the questionable death that might be murder set against the backdrop of a previous questionable death and one common factor, Olivia and her insecurities.
In Too Deep is well written with an eclectic cast of characters. They are both likeable and unlikeable which makes them perfectly human. I identified most with Detective Sergeant Kerry Lawlor while empathizing with the band mates.
The descriptions are well written and intriguing. The book is filled with twists and turns I didn't see coming. At one point, I suspected everyone, questioned their motives and couldn't put the book down. I had to know what happened.
Read and reviewed for Zooloo's Book Tours, Rose McClelland and Arden Publishing.
Publication date 22nd January 2023.
This is the first book I have read by this author. It is also the third book in the 'Detectives Simon and Kerry' series but can be read as a standalone.
I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching gorgeous cover and intriguing sounding synopsis and title.I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Arden Publishing. I have yet to read a book published by Arden Publishing that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of 50 chapters. The chapters are short in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in Ireland 🇮🇪 , UK 🇬🇧. I always enjoy when books are set in the UK as I'm from Wales and have sometimes visited areas mentioned in the book. This makes it easier to picture where the scenes are set at times. I have in fact been to Ireland several times and love it there so am looking forward to "visiting" again.
This book is written in first person perspective and the main protagonists are Sergeant Kerry Lawlor, Olivia Harris, Jack Harris, Tony Chapman and Roxie Richardson. The benefits of books written in first person perspective with multiple protagonists are as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them. If there are several protagonists you also get to see more of what is going on.
Love, love, LOVED this incredibly fast paced, addictive psychological thriller that is absolutely packed with secrets, twists and lies!!
This book is extremely well written with vivid descriptions that really set the scene and put you in the storyline. The cover and synopsis suit the book perfectly.
The storyline was captivating and addictive from the first page until the last and I was completely invested in it. It was absolutely rammed full of lies, secrets, affairs, tension, romance, twists, suspense and everything you could ask for in a page turning psychological thriller. I just could not put this book down and finished it in one sitting. The storyline of the characters being in a band made it extra interesting for me as it is the first time I have read a crime involving a band. I was absolutely landed when I realised this is part of a series as I absolutely loved Sergeant Kerry Lawlor and DCI Simon Peters, the characters the series is based on and I cannot wait to see what cases the previous books bring them!! This book was extremely fast paced with something constantly happening to keep you addicted. Every time I kept telling myself one more chapter the one I was in ended at a point where there was no way I could stop reading so I absolutely devoured it in one sitting!! It was absolutely ram packed with mystery, secrets, tension, suspense and absolutely everything you could ask for in a psychological thriller. I was constantly guessing and questioning myself about who was behind what and when everything was revealed I was absolutely shocked and had been completely wrong about everything!! This is not an easy feat considering how many books I read a year so a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS Rose!!! Rose's evocative writing drags you deep into the storyline from the first sentence to the very last and will keep you up until the very last word! THAT ladies and gentleman is a true sign of an absolute must read. I absolutely loved the ending which was definitely an unexpected twist, not only finding out who did what but the mind blowing and unexpected ending!! I would absolutely LOVE to see this turned into a movie and would wait up all night to get tickets to watch it!! An absolute must read!!
Although this is the third book in the series I had absolutely no problems reading it without the others and didn't even realise it was part of a series until I was writing this review!
I hope your busy writing your next book Rose as I just cannot wait to see what bombshell twist and explosive storyline you have up your sleeve for us next!!!!
Do not start this book until you have cleared your schedules as you will not be able to put it down!!
The characters have a mix of personalities and are all strong and realistic. I was shocked by the fact that although I could not stand the majority of the characters I still loved the book! It is very rare that if I dislike the characters in a book that I am able to get stuck in to it yet alone finish AND LOVE it so an absolutely HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Rose for managing to do both!!! I absolutely love the fact that we get to see how so many of the characters are feeling and what they are thinking, it gives the reader a huge picture of what is going on but Rose still manages to keep so many secrets hidden too. Olivia's obsession and paranoia with her husband Jack and being unable to let him go out without her being there in case another woman looks at him had me grinding my teeth in anger. If that was a man doing the same to a woman it would definitely flag up as domestic abuse and I still believe it is the same controlling behaviour regardless of the genders. If you are that paranoid in a relationship and have that little faith then there is no point in being together. However, does she have a reason to be the way she is?? I started off liking Jack and feeling sorry for him but my feelings for him changed several times during the book but I won't say more about him as I don't want to give too much away. I couldn't stand Olivia's brother Tony who loved himself, is an absolute man hore and doesn't care about anyone but himself and money. I didn't mind Charlotte (Tony's wife) too much, but she did annoy me at times but I also felt sorry for her. She was the opposite of Olivia and didn't mind seeing other women draped over Tony. I could not stand Roxie who was basically a female version of Tony and I think they would have suited each other. The only characters I actually really liked were Sergeant Kerry Lawlor and DCI Simon Peters. They made a great team and both had fantastic likeable personalities. I love the fact that they were open minded with the case and didn't believe everything they were being told. I cannot wait to go back to the first two books in this series and meet them again. I won't say anything else as I don't want to spoil it for future readers. However, regardless of whether you love or hate these characters each of them played their parts perfectly to make this the addictive storyline that it is!!
Congratulations Rose on an absolutely huge success!! Welcome to my favourite authour list and I cannot wait to get stuck into more of your addictive books, especially the first two books in this series!! Here's to your next success 🥂!!

A close group of characters, who can you trust? This story centers around a band made up of Tony, Jack, and Roxie. Olivia is Jack’s wife and Tony’s sister. Charlotte is Tony’s wife and manager of the band. Olivia is very insecure in her marriage and it upsets Jack and affects the rest of the group. Roxie is the new attractive singer and Olivia hates her. Bad things happen to the band, especially Roxie. Who can you trust?
This wonderful book will intrigue you. I’ve very glad I picked up this book. It is a great suspense story with a amazing set of characters. It is told in multiple POV so you can see deeper into the characters minds. I highly enjoyed this book!
This story consists of 4 main characters, Tony, Charlotte, oliva and Jack, then we are introduced to the 5th, Roxie, a short while after. All of them are involved in some way or another with a joint band, that's where Roxie comes in as the new lead singer. It appears she not be trusted with an incredibly flirty attidtude with the guys. Oliva aka livvy, who is wife of Jack and the sister of Tony, appears to have had a traumatic past with a past partner. I felt absolutely awful for what she went through, but, I didn't find her quite irritating at the same time, although I did understand because of her past, she did irritate me at times, maybe I'm just too harsh. Roxie appears to be the target of someone, her house gets broken into and alot more sinister things start to happen. Who is the master mind behind it all.
I absolutely flew through this book, incredibly suspenseful. And I think I became far too emotionally involved in it to be honest 🤣 A fantastic read that was incredibly easy to get hooked on! Look foward to seeing more from Rose McClelland
Thank you @zooloosbooktours @rosiegirl2000 for our place on this tour.
It’s only fairly recently that I discovered Rose McClelland and her fantastic books. I had the good fortune to read a copy of the first book in the series featuring Detectives Simon and Kerry, which is called ‘Under Your Skin’. When I heard that Rose was due to release another book in the series, I just knew that I had to read it at the earliest opportunity. ‘In Too Deep’ is the third book in the series featuring Detectives Simon and Kerry and it was released on 22nd January 2023. It’s another cracking read, which I really enjoyed but more about that in a bit.
It took me a little while to get into ‘In Too Deep’ which had a lot to do with the fact that I found it rather difficult to warm to some of the characters- mainly the members of the band. I just thought that there was something a little iffy about them and that they were trying to keep certain things hidden. Of course it could just be that I have read too much crime fiction and I suspect everybody and believe nobody. Even though I wasn’t particularly fond of the band, I developed my own theories as to what was going to happen and of course I had to keep reading to see if I had guessed correctly or if I had completely wandered off in the opposite direction. The more of the book that I read, the more I wanted to read and the quicker the pages seemed to turn. I would pick the book up only intending to read a chapter or two but I would become so wrapped up in the story that I would lose all track of time and just how quickly I was getting through the book. All too quickly I reached the end of ‘In Too Deep’ and I had to say goodbye to the two detectives as well as the rest of the characters. I found ‘In Too Deep’ to be a gripping, tense and dramatic thriller that certainly kept me guessing.
‘In Too Deep’ is very well written but then I have come to expect that from Rose McClelland. Rose certainly knows how to grab the reader’s attention and draw them into what proves to be one hell of a story. For me, this was a slow burn story in that the story started off slowly and then as the story continued the pace gathered momentum, which led to a tense and dramatic conclusion. I loved the working relationship between Detectives Simon and Kerry. Reading ‘In To Deep’ felt like being on an at times scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with several twists and turns along the way. I love the way in which Rose makes the reader feel as though they are part of the story themselves and at the heart of the action.
In short, I really enjoyed reading ‘In Too Deep’ and I would recommend this book to other readers. I will most definitely be reading more of Rose’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 4* out of 5*.
I really enjoyed this book but it wasn't quite what I'd exlected.
Once we've been introduced to all the main characters, Lucy, the lead singer of the band, is found dead. Drowned at sea with a cocktail of drink and drugs in her system and a history of mental health issues.
We quickly meet Detectives Simon and Kerry who start their investigation into the case. I found the police side a little unrealistic as the investigation didn't really go anywhere and before we knew it, the case was closed. Having thought it was going to be a standard police procedural, this didn't happen.
Having said that, we then follow the main characters as they work finding a new lead singer for the band and the insecurities and jealousies that follow on from there.
I found the characters to be really relatable at the start and developed well throughout. Even though I wasn't keen on them as people, I think they were quite well written.
The plot was twisty and it drew us in and led us in certain directions. I made quite a few theories throughout but then things completely changed towards the end of the case and I really hadn't seen that coming. Then just as you think it's over, we were treated to another shock right at the end.
I really enjoyed the plot and found the writing style easy to read. I read this over one sitting.
I really think that as the writing matures, this could develop into a nice series for our detectives and look forward to seeing them in future books by this author.
So many twists and turns, red herrings, rabbit holes and curveballs, had me quickly turning the pages in this suspenseful thriller, in anticipation of finding the real truth. Told from the perspectives of several main protagonists, we get to see different sides of the story and what the detectives based their theories on. I was very frustrated by Olivia, I wanted to shout at her for her emotional attitude to her husband Jack but then the music industry that Jack is in and a rock band with drop dead gorgeous lead singers - would have most wives green with envy. But is all as it seems? And is Olivia justified to be concerned or has her paranoia reached dangerous levels? I have to be honest and say I didn’t like any of the characters (other than the detectives) but that animosity towards them, aids the suspense and you really don’t know who to believe, what to think and where it’s all going to end. “In Too Deep” is the third book in the Detectives Simon and Kerry series but works perfectly as a stand-alone, since I wasn’t even aware it was part of a series it worked so well. I definitely want to read the previous two now and although each can be read separately, Rose’s writing is so addictive I’d recommend reading all three in order if you can. #InTooDeep - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My Thoughts: We follow Detective Lawlor trying to fiqure out what happen when Lucy a signer in a band shows up dead. Was it an accident or did another band member do it. This thriller has drama, cheating, jealousy and now a new beautiful singer what happens next will have guessing
this one had all the key elements that makes a good thriller - dodgy sister/brother duo, drama & secrets all around , lots of band vibes & even more drama, a gross toxic relationship - where she pays for everything & he’s an absolute ****⠀ ⠀ However the amount of cheating & some nasty two faced people made me insecure even in a healthy relationship, it was written extremely well to be able to make me do that but overthinking isn’t exactly a good thing 😂⠀ ⠀ thank you @zooloosbooktours for including me in this tour x
First Lucy, the lead singer of the band is found dead on the beach with all the other members saying she disappeared at dinner the night before, she went to the loo and never came back.. now I thought this would be the main crux of the story but boy was I wrong.. In fact it very quickly seemed to be forgotten which threw me for a while 😂
DS Kerry Lawlor isn’t happy with the verdict of suicide, so with the help of the person you’d probably least expect she decides to dig a little deeper!
Every single person is hiding something and people keep turning up dead..
The short snappy chapters and the fact that this story was told from multiple perspectives meant that you got a full well rounded story.. some chapters even recapping the same scene from a different characters view.. this is something I didn’t know I needed but really helped when following the story along!
I was so engrossed in the book and the lives of the characters that this book was read in one sitting, I absolutely loved it.. it took what I thought would be the outcome and totally flipped it on it’s head, it’s not often that happens when you read as many books as I do and I was here for it!
Definitely feel like I should go back and read the first 2 in the series now, but this one read absolutely fine as a stand alone & I would definitely add it to your list, it’s worth the read!
