The Snow Show

Rate this book
Breathtaking, sublime, illuminating, and meditative works in snow and icea tribute to the ingenuity of the participants and an inspiration and cause for reflection in an age of global warming. In early 2004, in a remote area of Finnish Lapland, one of the most ambitious art and design events in recent history took place. Seventeen collaborations between international artists and architects, the finished works were a triumph of creativity over matter, beauty over ego, hot ideas over arctic materials. Pieces ranged from room-sized cylindrical ice-block lanterns to an amphitheater made from snow. The exhibition was one of the most fascinating events of the yearand it was only the beginning. Traveling and expanding in size and planned as a centerpiece of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, "The Snow Show" will continue to delight visitors from around the world. With exquisite photography, detailed plans and sketches, and project descriptions written by the artists and architects, this book is a celebration of overcoming nature's harshest conditions with elegance and beauty. Artist/Architect Eva Rothschild/Anamorphosis, Yoko Ono/Arata Isozaki, John Roloff/Diller + Scofidio, Lawrence Weiner/Enrique Norten, Jene Highstein/Steven Holl, Robert Barry/Hollmen-Reuter-Sandman, Tatsuo Miyajima/Tadao Ando, Anish Kapoor/Future Systems, Rachel Whiteread/Juhani Pallasmaa, Kiki Smith/Lebbeus Woods, Osmo Rauhala/Asymptote, Top Changtrakul/LOT-EK, Do-Ho Suh/Morphosis, Ernesto Neto/Ocean North, Lothar Hempel/Studio Granda, Carsten Holler/Williams & Tsien, Cai Guo-Qiang/Zaha Hadid. 250 illustrations, 150 in color.

A lovely review of the beautiful yet temporary art event of snow and ice sculpture, both man- and nature-made. This 2004 event took place in Finland, and the book details each project and the artists and processes behind them. The main drawback is in the monochromatic and grainy quality of the photographs, many of which almost appear to be photocopied from newspaper articles. However this book succeeds as more than just a collection of images, but instead gives a look into the world of the artists who participated in the Snow Show.

Awesome pictures, but the small amount of text that there was, surely explaining the concept behind the pictures, was so tiny text it wasn't even worth looking at.
