Laura Ziepe was born in Essex and has lived there all her life. She had a small part in the first series of The Only Way is Essex but decided a life in front of the cameras wasn’t really for her; she much preferred the dramas she could dream up on her laptop! When she’s not writing, she loves to read, travel, cook and spend time at home Essex with her fiancé and two Chihuahuas, Dolly and Dusty.
This is a very strong 3.5 star book. It could have been higher if one of the story-lines (Grace's) had been a bit tighter and actually full of tension. Most of her story-line was self-inflicted and I thought her hiding what she was up to was beyond ridiculous. I really loved Amber and Rachel's storyline. I always get a kick out of romance novels set during holiday events so this one was a nice pick me up due to the winter blues that I have going right now.
"Tis the Season to Be Single" is about three women (Rachel, Grace, and Amber) going through singledom during the Christmas and New Year.
Rachel expects her long term boyfriend Mark to finally propose. Too bad she finds out he wants to break up with her and also is seeing her best friend.
Grace is tired of her husband Simon ignoring all that she does for him (cooking, cleaning, etc.) and is starting to realize that the romance in their marriage has gone. She finally decides to tell him she wants to be separated while she thinks about what to do next.
Amber is a commitment-phobe. After having her father leave her and her mother when she was younger, Amber would rather meet a hot guy and immediately set him free again. Things change though when Amber comes back from holiday to find out her childhood best friend Jack is now engaged. Amber is starting to realize that maybe what she feels towards Jack isn't sisterly love at all, but something more. Once all three women realize that they are now single, Amber pushes them to embrace the single life with a pact to stay single and be each other's dates for their company's annual holiday party.
Rachel's story leads things off and starts the book off strong. I felt for her and wanted to smack her boyfriend and her so-called friend. I think that Ziepe does a good job of showcasing how one-sided her relationship and friendship really was. And I did love the fact that Rachel wasn't a doormat just waiting to be walked on again by her so-called friend. I do wish though that Rachel had realized that being single was more than okay. We get to see her do just two dates in this one and I wanted more of her having funny dates or out there dates with men.
Amber's story was very good too. There is a sub-plot about her father that actually kind of worked in the overall story. Amber realizing that she is in love with Jack was nice to read about. And I loved that she didn't try to do anything to wreck his relationship. I hate young adult or new adult books that show two people emotionally cheating or one of the main characters trying to do their best to wedge in between the two people who are dating. Ziepe does a good job of showing Jack's picture perfect fiancee and how initially Amber couldn't find fault with her.
Grace's story annoyed me for some reason. I think it's because she acknowledges things in their marriage got hard when they tried for a baby and failed and doesn't see that maybe that's what is going on underneath things. I also am never on the side of passive aggressive characters which is what it sounded like Grace was at times. I do wish that Ziepe had shown her family's reaction more to her being separated from Simon. That didn't ring true to me at all that she would just be moving in Rachel and not a peep from her sister or other relatives about it.
I did love that all three women worked together which allows them to be in more scenes together. Also all of them do make-up and we get to read about how Grace does extra work at weddings. I was pretty curious about what the other two women did too. Amber seems to be a I will do this job until I get bored person.
The writing was good though I wish the book was longer. Ziepe could have added even more character development to this book by including in characters that are spoken of and never seen such as Grace's family. We get lots of Rachel and Amber's family and other important people in their lives. Grace seems to only have Rachel, Amber, and her estranged husband. Also as I said above, it would have been nice to see Rachel go on even more dates before her HEA that came.
The flow was good and Ziepe manages to balances all of the stories. I just felt somewhat bored by Grace's after it becomes apparent where Ziepe is going with it.
The ending was very sweet and I liked that all three women got what they needed and all got a HEA.
Rachel returned home one evening after work to her boyfriend Mark telling her he no longer loves her and that he thinks he should split up. Turning to her best friend for comfort, Rachel gets a shock when she discovers that the reason for him no longer loving her is that he is in love with someone else and the two have been having an affair behind her back for the past two months.
Grace has had enough of feeling like a doormat and cook, maid and bottle washer for her lazy husband Simon. She has had the talk with him before about being unappreciated, this time she has had enough and decides it’s time the two split up. However, Simon might have more love in him that Grace ever realised as he’s not about to leave their marriage without a fight.
Amber has just returned from her three weeks holiday in Thailand and back to work to discover both Grace and Rachel looking pretty miserable. Not great given the fact they work on a cosmetics stand in a department store. She also finds out her best friend Jack is getting married and can’t understand why she feels so terrible about it. Surely the two are only just friends and would never have been anything more?
With Christmas fast approaching the three women decide that being single is the best, especially at this time of year and ban all men until New Year, but can they keep their promise?
‘Tis the Season to be Single is a lot of fun. Yes, there are a few down moments, but there is also a lot of humour too. All three women are delightful in their own way and each is so different from the other.
The book moves along at a nice pace and all I can say is so much for staying away from men, if that is them staying away I don’t know what the book would have been like if they were full on in the dating mood!!
If you are looking for a festive book with a great plot, well written and with a wonderful cast of characters, then this is the book for you.
I have never heard of this author before but had seen the book advertised a lot of Facebook and looked really good and didn't key me down at all simply brilliant had me hooked from the first page and I didn't want to pit it down. Full of heartbreak but also romance and finding out what it's like to be single with your friends. Can people be happy single or do they want romance. Has a lot about friendship as well and a great read worth far more than the five stars. It is based around three main characters you have.:
Rachel who lives in a flat above where her mum lives and she grew up she's single but has a very good friend who is male but she comes back from a holiday and learns that Jack is engaged to Natalya how does she react to this or is it that she learns she has fallen in love with Jack but doesn't want to tell him and ruin a friendship. Is Natalaya right for him or is she jealous of the friendship Jack has with Amber. What can Amber do for the best and when she meets someone she hasn't seen for years she needs to decide what is right for her.
Grace has been with Simon for years but feel the spark has gone so she decides they split and he's not happy and says he will change but can he. He starts trying to prove he has changed but she keeps him a secret from everyone but can they decide to be together for ever or not.
Rachel learns her husband and best friend have been having an affair for a long time and she is so upset she moves out and decides she's off men but when she has an accident with another car and gorgous Nick is there can she be happy with him or is he hiding something and can she forgive him and move forward or not.
While all three girls are single they all make a pact they will go to the Christmas work ball single but can they all do this in the end or not as can they share their new lives off. Can all three girls be happy single or married.
A simply Devine read and so recommend anyone to read it. I was so enchanted by the who story. Now want to read more by the same author.
First, I want to thank Laura Ziepe, HQ Digital, and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review.
This was a must-read book for me for so many reasons! Tis The Season to Be Single as Laura Ziepe names her book!! I had to laugh at the title as I am usually single at this time of year too! Whomever designed the cover deserves props as it was such a fun loving cover that caught my eye. Overall it was a very fun read!!
Right away Laura immerses you into the story and grabs your attention. I love when authors does this!! This was an incredible storyline!! So much drama I loved it! I was reading a prime time soap opera! Rachel and Mark were living together and she thought they would be together forever. Until one night when she thought he was going to propose. Nope he had other plans!! Hence the title! Laura puts a twist on the reason for the break up and it is a very juicy one that will test friendships! Then you have Grace and her husband who is taking advantage of her and walking all over her. She wants out. This is a huge wake up call for him!! Like I said Laura is an amazing story teller!!
This book is dedicated to the three loves in her life her husband Terry, her beautiful twins Harry and Darcey.
Laura would like to thank her family for putting up with her. A huge thanks her mom for babysitting her children whenever she needed to work.
Laura would like to acknowledge and thank Charlotte Mursell at HQ for loving the book and being so passionate and enthusiastic about it. She has been an very helpful and wonderful editor. She is also is thankful for her agent, Hannah Ferguson, who has always stuck by her and has been so patient with her attempts. She always believes in her. Congratulations to Hannah for her little bundle of joy! Thank you to Joanna Swainson who was covering for Hannah while she was out on maternity leave when Laura got this book deal.
At the end of the book Laura writes this really cute note to the reader thanking them for reading this book. She goes on to explain why she wrote the book. Also, HQ Digital also writes a letter to the reader as well.
I wasn't entirely happy with how women are portrayed - from the crazy side character love rival who was manipulative and stalkerish to the main characters who were supposed to be concentrating on themselves and friendship but it was ALL about the men. There really was a nice friendship between the 3 women, but all too often their love life took priority over that friendship.
The writing style didn't appeal to me either with a lot of telling rather than showing.
It was however a quick, easy read with lots of festive atmosphere. If you're looking for a fluffy, light hearted, romantic read then this might be for you.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher / author for providing me with a free electronic copy of this book for review.
First book I read from Laura Ziepe and that won't be the last! Mark my word! I am giving this book a 4,5 stars out of 5! I loved this book so much! It was extremely enjoyable to read and the I loved the writing style of the author. This is the story of 3 friends, Rachel, Grace and Amber. Rachel is newly single after learning that her boyfriend cheated on her with her best friend, Grace is also newly separated from her husband who is no longer taking good care of her and who taking her for granted. As for Amber, she is the eternal single who declares to enjoy the singleton life. But how long will these girls will stay single? This is a story about love, friendship and trust and I enjoyed every single line of this book! I urge you to read it! And even though this book takes place around the Christmas season, the Christmas theme is not the most important part of the book and therefore this can be read all year round!
This was alternately enjoyable and a wee bit frustrating. I liked the fact that there were 3 different main characters all going through their own UGH at Christmas.
But (and this is me being nitpicky) all 3 of them worked retail (makeup counter) at Christmas time and always seemed to have evenings and weekends off???? Having worked the same in my twenties this was un-freaking-believable. A little thing, not even a relevant to the story thing. But it made me pause too many times.
Overall cute, quick and British. With all of the happily ever after feels for the holidays.
The first thing I want to know about this book is if the three main characters all work on the same counter in a Department Store how did they manage to have a holiday away together? This is referred to a couple of times in the book and it just stuck with me - we are invited to believe that they became friends through their work and somehow they all managed to get away from a retail job at the same time? Okay, this has nothing to do with the actual story being told and is just a passing background information notation in the text but, 10 days after finishing the book, it has lodged in my head.
I found the main story to be a bit of a jumble if I'm being honest and there was quite a lot of frustration involved in reading about the three women. I think that the main bone of contention for me was the title suggests that this is a book about people reaching for their own personal happiness without it relying on others. Instead what we get is the very clear message that a woman cannot be happy without a man - friends are just not enough it seems, so much so that they lie to each other continuously and break their vow about the Christmas Party.
May be I am being a bit harsh as the genre this firmly falls in is, after all, one that promotes romance. So with that in mind lets discuss the writing and the plotting. The writing itself is what saved this book for me - it is well paced, funny and did keep me entertained throughout. There is a good understanding of people and everybody in it has a distinct multi-faceted personality that is very difficult to pull off so I applaud the author for this. On the whole the plot was reasonably good, it was just the message at the end when they all partner off that irritated me beyond redemption.
Would I read something else by this author? Well, YES, yes I would and happily.
Rachel is in shock. She was sure that her boyfriend was about to propose – not break up with her! Even worse, it turns out he’s been cheating on her!
Grace can’t bear the thought of spending another Christmas with her lazy, unappreciative husband. Surely it’s time to shake things up a bit?
Amber knows she should be happy that her best friend Jack is getting married, but there’s a little part of her that can’t help think ‘it was always meant to be me’!
With Christmas fast approaching, surely there’s no better time to be single – yet will the three friends manage to keep their promise and ban all men until the New Year?
A story of heartbreak, romance, discovery and friendships, with lots of twists and turns. Can people really be happy single or do they really want romance?
This had me hooked form the first page... I couldn't put it down and look forward to reading more of this author's work.
A good light hearted, seasonal, romantic read about three friends and co-workers, Rachel, Grace and Amber. As Christmas approaches they should all be feeling happy, but when Rachel finds out that her boyfriend isn’t going to propose, but instead wishes to break up with her, things start to unravel for the trio of friends. Grace begins to question whether she is getting all that she wants from her marriage and Amber, who has always been happily single, is shocked by the engagement of her long-standing best friend, Jack, to a young and beautiful woman. What will become of the three of them? ‘Tis it really the season to be single? Thanks to NetGalley for a Kindle copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was a lovely Christmas read to get me into the spirit. I enjoyed it - mostly I enjoyed Ambers story. She was my favorite, and I loved her and jack. I loved Rachel, too - but Grace fell flat. Her husband made her unhappy, so she goes on a break, and he thinks him making a damn snowman couple and taking her to the theatre once makes up for his years of mistreatment and neglect? He tries to give her an ultimatum which isn’t fair, because they separated on her terms. Anyway, if you’re going to read, read it for Amber and Jack.
Before reading this book, I had never heard of this author but now I can say with some conviction that I will definitely be checking her out again. I was a little unsure as to whether this would be my cup of tea but I need not have worried, Laura Ziepe's writing style is incredible!! She had me hooked from the very first page.
'Tis the Season to be Single (try saying that without singing it to a well known Christmas tune, it's incredibly difficult :D) was a lighthearted and fun read about three friends who find themselves single at the same time for the first time ever!! It was so much fun reading about them as they tried to navigate the festive period as singletons.....or were they?
This was a lovely festive read that was filled with friendship, heartbreak and romance and it should definitely be at the top of your must read list this year!!!
This feel-good Christmas story is about three friends who make a pact to remain single until New Year, following disappointments in their relationships.
Rachael has just received a phone call from her boyfriend of three years. He says they need to talk. She wonders what could be so important that her boyfriend would choose to speak to her about it in person. Her friend, Grace tries to assuage her concerns—she thinks he wants to propose to Rachael. When they finally meet, he tells her he is breaking up with her. Her world is suddenly turned upside down. To make matters worse she discovers her ex-boyfriend has been cheating on her with someone very close to her.
Grace and her husband, Simon, have tried unsuccessfully, to have a child. Lately, her marriage has gone stale: her husband treats her like a doormat. He doesn’t treat her the way he used to when they first met. Whereas he used to be spontaneous and adventurous, now he’s become complacent, not putting any effort and expecting Grace to do all the work. After trying to get her husband to talk about their marriage without success, she decides to take a break from her marriage.
Amber has just returned from her three-week vacation in Thailand and back to work to find her friends, Rachael and Grace looking gloomy. She isn’t bothered about getting married and couldn't care less about having children either. Until her best friend, Jack announces to Amber that he’s getting married. Why does this news bother her since they have been nothing more than friends? Or have they? With Christmas fast approaching, the girls make a pact to remain single until New Year. But can they follow through with it?
‘Tis the Season to be Single is a fresh mix of romance, friendship, love, and family. I really enjoyed this book—it is a light and fun read for the holiday season. The characters are interesting and relatable. I liked how Simon fought to save his marriage when he realized he was going to lose Grace if he didn’t put any effort. Overall an entertaining read and I will read more books from this author.
Many thanks to NetGalley and HQ Digital for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A light hearted book that explores three women in three very different relationships: one has settled, one is not being appreciated and one hasn’t seen what’s staring her in the face!!
An easy read that was not challenging yet made you look at relationships from different perspectives. I particularly enjoyed the mothers’ involvement in the story!
3.5* An enjoyable read with a relaxed and flowing writing style.
Quite predictable as a lot of books of this genre are but still a wholesome read that was just what I needed for the festive period. The book doesn’t go down the traditional chick-lit route where every little detail about clothes and make up is described in so much detail it’s wholly unnecessary, which was lovely. The audiobook is nice, too, as the narrator does a decent job with it.
LOVED this. A real Rom-com, sex in the city meets festive movie read! I enjoyed the 3 characters all with completely different love stories happening. It made the book hard to put down to read the next part of each one’s story. A nice ending for all and a nice quick read so nothing felt like it was dragging out to meet a word count!
The reason I gave this a two star review , was it was represented as a " festive romantic comedy " and it was not. Three coworkers go through big upheavals in their love lives at the holiday season. I was expecting a funny light hearted story and this was not it.
This is a lovely story of a few friends who had their ahem quite bad experiences on their love life and it is such a chill read I love it! such a light-hearted read for you when you just need to relax and de-stress.
A fun read that explores various stages of friendship, relationships, and mishaps. As Christmas time is a time for gathering for many, it made for the perfect setting. A nice relaxing read.
Enjoyable story but a bit disappointing. What started out an ode to singleness ended up with 3 happily mated women. The characters having found there soulmates. The romantic in me is thrilled the happily single girl in me is annoyed.
This book was so fun! All 3 characters were relatable and I liked their stories. If you're looking for a different kind of holiday read, this is a good one! 7.5/10 I think it could have been longer but I still enjoyed it.
