During World War I he joined the French army and served as an interpreter and later a liaison officer to the British army. His first novel, Les silences du colonel Bramble, was a witty but socially realistic account of that experience. It was an immediate success in France. It was translated and also became popular in the United Kingdom and other English-speaking countries as The Silence of Colonel Bramble. Many of his other works have also been translated into English (mainly by Hamish Miles (1894–1937)), as they often dealt with British people or topics, such as his biographies of Disraeli, Byron, and Shelley.
During 1938 Maurois was elected to the prestigious Académie française. Maurois was encouraged and assisted in seeking this post by Marshal Philippe Pétain, and he made a point of acknowleging with thanks his debt to Pétain in his 1941 autobiography, Call no man happy - though by the time of writing, their paths had sharply diverged, Pétain having become Head of State of the Nazi-collaborationist Vichy France.

By the time he wrote this book at age 54 in 1939, Andre Maurois had already achieved a literary reputation in France and Great Britain for his numerous biographies and his memoir about his post as translator for the British military high command during World War I. Reading this book of essays on the phases of life (The Art of Thinking, of Loving, of Working, of Leading and of Growing Old, with a brief chapter on The Art of Dying and a concluding 'Letter to Young Men') is rather like having a frank discussion with a worldly-wise uncle seeking to impart his hard-won wisdom before his mental faculties grow dim. Some of the comments vis-à-vis the complicated relations between men and women are anachronistic (i.e., frankly sexist - but never misogynistic), and none of the ideas are original. The charm of this book resides not in the profundity of its ideas, but in its limpid style (I read this in French, which lends itself to this sort of clarity) and its evocation of a vanished age when literary figures took their places between generals, businessmen and lawyers in the corridors of political power. The book is beautifully illustrated, and Maurois accompanies his essays with abundant historical examples and carefully selected quotations from famous historical figures. This book was published a few months before Nazi and Stalinist forces invaded Poland, thereby precipitating the Second World War. Some of M. Maurois' observations, such as his praise for Neville Chamberlain's diplomatic 'coup' in averting war with Germany, and his naive confidence in France's political stability (true) and military preparedness (tragically false) are especially poignant given this historical context. I highly recommend this book for it's insights and readability; it's like reading a twentieth century Montaigne.

Позитивіст і гуманіст Моруа написав книгу яку краще прочитати в 18 ніж в 35, бо для мене, дорослого читача, «Мистецтво жити» лишило по собі двояке відчуття: з одного боку легкий і позитивний виклад думок з якими важко не погодитись, але з іншого - занадто загально і…банально? Якщо частина про уміння мислити і логіку ще викликала такий-сякий інтерес, то далі починається лекторій на тему кохання, роботи, навчання і старості в якому я все бачу знайомі і сто разів читані істини (які тим не менш доволі важко імплементувати в своє життя…🤷♂️). Думаю цілком можна радити цю книгу підліткам і людям яким подобається мотиваційна література загальнолюдського характеру.
P.S: я читав друге видання від «Апріорі» в новому оформленні, і не зрозумів оцього ходу з додаванням в кінці афоризмів які вже були в книзі. 75% матеріалу із розділу «Афоризми» це повний передрук тексту із першої частини. Навіщо?

كتاب جميل بقلم إنسان متفائل يرى الخير في الوجود ويحفز الطاقة الإيجابية بالإضافة إلى أفكاره العميقة التي يمكن أن تصحبك وأنت تقرأ العالم والآخرين وتضع برامج يومك في وقت ما حتى تتجاوزه لكنك لن تنساه إذ سيظل صديقا قديما فتح لك قلبه وعقله بمودة

یک کتاب به شدت غیرعلمی و غیرتخصصی، با عقاید عصر حجری درباره زنان و تاریخ مصرف گذشته که اصلا نمیدونم چرا خوندمش!!! به جای خوندن این کتاب، میتونید سراغ کتابهای خیلی بهتری برید، مطمئن باشید در اینصورت سود کردید!!

كتاب متعدد الموضوعات وشامل في جوانب الحياة ولكن نظراً لقدم زمنه فهو يهاجم الكثير من أساسيات الحياة التي كانت في عصره مستحدثة كما يعيبه الاغراق في النعرة الذكورية فيما يخص فنون الحب والزواج والحياة العائلية

Прочитав цю книгу тільки тому, що подарував таку ж другові на новий рік. Цікавість змусила купити її і собі.
Попри кілька безумовно нудних розділів і іноді дещо архаїчні думки, особливо по відношенню до жінок, я позитивно вражений цією книжкою. Мистецтво кохати я точно перечитаю ще кілька разів, адже написані ідеї перегукуються з моїми уявленнями про кохання. Мистецтво працювати та старіти точно залишили на мені свій відбиток. Хороша книга 🙌

Maurois has some good observations-- but unfortunately, he was still invested in/oblivious to a lot of ridiculous gender constructions, and the ills that accompanied them.

The Art of Living is one of those books that you come across in life unexpectedly but which can unknowingly have a long-lasting impact.

With perpetual changes in society, do we need to look for a new art of living? Maurois doesn’t think that this should be the case because our societal problems are to some degree the same issues that we have been confronted with in the past. “There is,however, something fundamental in humanity to which we shall always return because it is more or less immutable”.
Our lives are a work of art, beautifully shaped by our inner selves but tested by uncontrollable circumstances and experiences. Their trajectory is often modified by learning and by the willingness to grow as an individual. Each section of the book is filled with profound reflections and timeless advice, but also with an abundance of references to history and classic literature. Sabe o que tem faltado nesse mundo?
1 - Mais livros dissertativos com índices bem detalhados, do tipo Ernest Dimmet pregava. Tópico e subtópico etc.
2 - Autores que sabem não possuir uma vida tão interessante quantos as de Byron ou de Mozart (estou apontando para vocês americanos, com a milionésima historinha de que largou a faculdade para abrir um negócio. Ninguém liga.)
3 - Livros que terminam como uma grande sinfonia, num último movimento delicioso.
Tudo isso está presente nesse de Maurois,

A great early-morning read when your mind is open to a new day dawning outside your bedclothes! Considering it was published in 1940, I was amazed that Monsieur Maurois's experience,advice & literary & philosophical references could prove so relevant...even if many of the French writers he quoted were very vague names to me! I must educate myself again...about the art of living...before it's over!

Great literary work, in this book André Maurois describes what the art of living is for him, grouping life into different stages, beginning with what for him would be The art of thinking; then he continues with the art of loving, working, leading, growing old and thus walks the reader through several of the stages that most of us go through throughout a life, well lived, the poetic and bohemian narration of our writer , draws airs of nostalgia and longing for the times that forged those memories in the memory of an old man.
For me personally, a work that is enjoyed with every word that one reads.
I recommend it exceptionally.

Що таке мистецтво жити? Це досить спірне і філософське питання. І цілком природно, що в кожного з нас буде своя думка.
Ця книга не дасть вам прямих відповідей, але змусить замислитися.
Кожен знайде для себе розділ, який приверне найбільшу увагу. Для мене це було Мистецтво працювати. І от на цю тему хотілося б почитати побільше. А ще чесно признаюся, що останній розділ Мистецтво старіти я не дочитала до кінця, бо надто вже жахає мене старість та смерть.
Загалом скажу, що це не та книга, яку варто і можна заковтнути за один раз. Не зважаючи на її товщину в 180 сторінок, читала її повільно. Бо над кожним абзацом варто окремо подумати.
Ця книга не дасть вам прямих відповідей, але змусить замислитися.

This book is conventional and outdated. The author seems to believe that friendship doesn’t exist. This book isn’t a guide to how you should live your life, it’s just a book about one person’s particular beliefs stated like they’re facts. If you follow them, you’ll end up with no friends. One quote from the book is “What man calls friendship is only social intercourse, an exchange of favors and good offices; it comes down to a commercial dealing in which self-esteem always expects to profit.” I guess the author doesn’t know what true friendship is. If you have a real friend, then your relationship won’t comprise of business exchanges. You will be there to support each other and care for each other. Another quote I strongly disagree with is “ A friend loves you for your intelligence, a mistress of your charm, but a family’s love is unreasoning, you were born into and are of it’s flesh and blood. Nevertheless it can irritate you more than any group of people in the world.” First of all, a friend doesn’t love you for your intelligence and charm. That’s what a romantic partner would love you for. A friend loves you for who you are, and for the memories you have and have not yet made together. Second, by saying family can only be related to you by blood, and the only family you have is the one you were born into, you are excluding friends that are as close as family and adopted family. I have a best friend who’s like a sister to me. We love each other unreasoningly and we are family even though we live over 500 miles apart. I also have an adopted cousin who is just as much a part of the family as everyone else. You don’t need blood to be family, you need love. This can also work in reverse. Just because you are related to someone doesn’t mean you love them. I just think it isn’t fair to say that nobody who isn’t related to you or who isn’t your romantic partner can ever have a strong relationship with you. Lastly, friends can irritate you, too. Ironically, I found this quote next to quotes like, “Friends are the family you choose” and “Blood means you’re related. Love means you’re family” and “Your family members can be your best friends, you know. And friends, whether they are related or not, can be family.” Overall this book has many incorrect views and I would never recommend it to anyone or their life will be f*cked up.

Книга хороша. Не більше) Ну тобто такі треба читати десь в підлітковому віці, щоб отримати якісь моральні настанови на життя, з поправкою на дещо інші сучасні погляди на ту ж сім'ю, роль жінки і тд. Якщо читати її з якимось філософським бекґраундом чи вже після вивчення етики, ну, нового ви навряд чогось дізнаєтеся. Автор інтелектуал, він посилається на багатьох авторів, політиків, філософів, його роздуми досить цікаві. Але тут вони досить поверхневі, надто загальні, трішки воднуваті, як сказав би якийсь копірайтер. Тому в принципі я її раджу, але вона ну на вечір для гарного проведення часу, не більше.

I found this little book with a neatly penned gift inscription for a young man just starting out in the world. It was in a Christian organization's thrift store. While this copy was 60 years old, it looked to be like new, but had been read. I thought I'd take it for a spin, and found the writing to be about what you'd expect, very reflective, mostly common sense, with some odd suggestions here and there. I enjoyed the feel of the book - it felt antique in the thoughts, though not in the writing.

"Мистецтво жити" Андре Моруа це літературно-філософська рефлексія різних сфер буття. Добірка присвячена роздумам, почуттям, афоризмам.
Декілька слів, варто зазначити про автора, Андре Моруа французький письменник 1пол. ХХст. Серед його праць чимало психологічних романів, але найбільше відомі художні біографії Бальзака, Дюма, Байрона, Жорж Санд.
Для мене Мистецтво жити - це красива і метафорична книга. Більше схожа на збірку роздумів і цитат з різних сфер життя: кохання, праці, управління, навчання, читання, думання і старіння.
✔️Будь-яка думка є ескізом дії..
✔️Мислити неточними словами - те саме, що вимірювати вагу фальшивими тягарцями...
✔️Емоції потрібно контролювати, щоб не стати їхнім рабом...
✔️Знання здобуті без зусиль, швидко забуваються..
✔️Мистецтво читати - це вміння оцінити книжку порівняно із життям і збагнути його закони.
✔️Людська глупота і прикрі випадковості безмежні..
✔️Справжнє лихо старості не в слабкості тіла, а в байдужості душі..
✔️Життя - це постійна зміна....
По цих роздумах важко робити якісь висновки чи аналізувати філософські погляди автора. Це все ж таки не цілісний текст. Я не можу погодитись із описом із розділу Мистецтво кохати, для мене його ідеї занадто інфантильні і трішки примітивні🙈, хоча мають право на існування звісно.
Найбільше сподобалася поетична мова тексту, стільки смачних образів і порівнянь, які гармонійно вплітались в кожен розділ.

Мистецтво навчатись..
Мистецтво читати..
Мистецтво говорити..
Я отримую естетичне задоволення навіть від назв до розділів😻
Пізнавати світ, хід власних думок, експерементувати, постійно розвиватись, розуміти і контролювати власні почуття та вчинки, вміти символічно інтерпретувати чужі думки, вдосконалювати власний світогляд - це і є Мистецтво жити...

احيانا كنت اجري علي السطور، واحيانا اخري كنت اتأني بشدة.. الخلاصة انه لابد ان تنجذب ولو لموضوعا واحدا من الموضوعات المختلفة في الكتاب، كتابة تدل علي كاتب محنك و ترجمة رائعة كالعادة.. شكرا حلمي مراد
