The son of an antiquarian book dealer, he read English and Film at the University of Exeter before entering independent film production. ‘Fox Tossing, Octopus Wrestling and Other Forgotten Sports’ is his first book. He lives in London.

Nie od dziś muzycy śpiewają: All you need is love!
Ale czym jest w zasadzie ta miłość? Słownik PWN klasyfikuje to zjawisko jako:
1. «głębokie uczucie do drugiej osoby, któremu zwykle towarzyszy pożądanie»
2. «silna więź, jaka łączy ludzi sobie bliskich»
3. «poczucie silnej więzi z czymś, co jest dla kogoś wielką wartością»
4. «głębokie zainteresowanie czymś, znajdowanie w czymś przyjemności»
5. «obiekt czyichś uczuć i pragnień»
6. «pożycie seksualne»

Zaś autor tego zbioru - Edward Brooke-Hitching postanawia przeprowadzić swoich czytelników nie tylko przez wszystkie wymieniane przez słownik wątki ale również historyczne dowody istnienia miłości, jej zdobywania i opłakiwania jej straty.
Miłość. Historia przedziwna w 50 odsłonach. To jedna z piękniejszych książek jakie trafiły w tym roku w moje ręce. Czego w niej nie ma! Boski legion pełen kochanków tej samej płci, egipscy małżonkowie upamiętnieni w rzeźbach, miłosne łyżki i latające fallusy. Jak nie trudno się domyśleć w takim zestawie nie mogło zabraknąć również najsławniejszego kochana – Casanovy czy historii Walentynek i początków pornografii.
Ale nie ma się co dziwić, wszak MIŁOŚĆ niejedno ma imię :D
Ciężko było mi odłożyć tę książkę, choć nie ma ona fabuły to jednak bez trudu wciąga czytelnika do świata miłości i jej przejawów. Niezwykle ciekawym doświadczeniem było dla mnie spojrzenie w przeszłość i porównanie stosunku do małżeństwa czy wierności na przestrzeni wieków. Muszę przyznać, że choć z częścią zagadnień przedstawianych w treści opracowania byłam już wcześniej zaznajomiona to takie zebranie ich w jednym miejscu i pogrupowanie bardzo mi odpowiadało.
Choć trochę rozczarował mnie brak jednoznacznego wyjaśnienia czy pasy cnoty naprawdę były w użytku i na bogów jaką funkcję spełniały zawieszki przedstawiające organy płciowe w różnych dziwnych konfiguracjach (c..ka z taczką, c..a na koniu, p…s ze skrzydłami, p…s z końskimi kopytami i małym p....em) to nie mogę mieć tego za złe autorowi, ponieważ na te pytania historycy wciąż nie znaleźli jednoznacznej odpowiedzi :D
Oceniam te książkę naprawdę bardzo pozytywnie. Daje jej 9/10 i cieszę się, że ten rok mogę zakończyć właśnie z książką o miłości. No bo jak tu być ponurym, kiedy „love is In the air”?!
Myślę, że Miłość. Historia przedziwna w 50 odsłonach. Może być doskonałym prezentem na zbliżające się walentynki, ucieszy nie tylko zakochanych ale również historyków, psychologów czy fanów sztuki – ot, miłość ma dla każdego coś miłego :D

Nachdem ich von "The Madman's Library" schon total begeistert war, musste ich die signierte, um die Hälfte reduzierte Ausgabe von "Love - A Curious History" natürlich auch haben. Mit verschiedenen Objekten im Lauf der Jahrhunderte zeigt er humorvoll und etwas abstrus ("pun always intended in this volume") auf, wie sich Menschen schon immer ihre Zuneigung gezeigt haben. Herrlich.

Ein paar Beispielstücke: Es beginnt etwa 9000 vC mit den Ain Sakhri Liebenden, geht über Liebe im alten Rom und Griechenland, zum Kama Sutra, über die Unicorn Tapestries, zu Percy Shelleys fehlendem Herzen und Frida Kahlos fehlendem Herzen. Und am Ende steht die Liebe von Carl Sagan und Ann Druyan und plötzlich bringt mich ein Sachbuch zum Heulen. Das hat man auch nicht oft.

A fun coffee table book that can be read a little bit at a time. Full of silly, bizarre, and totally good for nothing tidbits of history that sound exactly like something you will hear on QI with Stephen Fry, which is not a surprise given that the author was a script writer for the show. It's a big book but most of it is filled with high definition photos of museum objects, a feast for the curious art lovers.

In one sense, love is ephemeral, invisible and impermanent (a ‘smoke made with the fumes of sighs,’ as Shakespeare so beautifully describes); but to an historian love is an ancient engine of tumult and consequence.

Kocham! Gdyby na lekcjach historii pojawiła się 1/1000 takich ciekawostek jestem przekonana, że mielibyśmy całe pokolenie historyków ;) dużo humoru i wiedzy. Z chęcią zabiorę się za lekturę innych książek autora.
