DNF’ing books is always so painful for me but this book has been sitting on my nightstand for 2 years now and Im 30% through and felt no desire to pick it up, it’s so long, not that I’m against long books. But it was turning into a giant lecture/textbook on Mexican revolutions which like cool to do that, but I’ll read a nonfiction book on Mexico, thanks lmao! Also one of those older historical romance books where the romance is really underdeveloped in place of batshit crazy stuff happening and I just don’t care 😂

At first, I thought this novel seemed like a fun and engaging adventure/melodrama/romance. It was not quite as silly and flowery as some of the other historical romances out there, and the Texan hero was very likeable. I wasn't expecting a classic, but I *was* expecting a decent time-killer. However, I eventually gave up on this novel about a quarter of the way through, and these are my main criticisms:

If you are going to write a nearly thousand-page book that takes place in Spain and Mexico, and if you're going to use lots of Spanish phrases in that book, you *might* want to make sure that those Spanish phrases are actually correct. This book is loaded with misspelled and misused Spanish words. It's glaringly obvious that the author has almost zero knowledge of Spanish, not even the level of knowledge that could be gained from spending ten minutes with a dictionary or a phrase-book. I am not exagerrating when I say that there is better Spanish in a Speedy Gonzales cartoon.
Almost every single page features "Spanish" words that are misspelled or used ungrammatically, or sometimes words that are just entirely made-up and nonsensical. (There's some misspelled Yiddish, too, for good measure!)

There are geographical errors, too, which could have been solved by spending literally a few seconds glancing at a map. I don't think any Mexican has ever been to "Moreles" or "Querertaro." (Morelos and Queretaro.)

Again, I wasn't expecting "serious literature", just a fun beach-read, but the author seems to have been very, very lazy and careless with her research.

My other complaint: there are some really disgusting and graphic scenes of rape and violence in this novel. You don't want to attempt to read this book while you're eating. I gave up after the heroine was raped for about the fourth time and I realized that this book was just going to be torture-porn.

Don't read this unless you're okay with typos on every page, a cartoonish portrayal of Mexican culture, and some disturbing violence/gore.

My favorite smut book. Romance, sex, war, sport, rebels, adventure, magic, betrayal, blah, blah... it's all there.

I like the image, and the art, but needs to be racier.
