Ahhhhhhh wtf this volume was so good!!!! It started off so intense and the games in this volume were so action packed and thought provoking and interesting!! (One of my favorites from the show!) And the way this one ended are you kidding me!!! Even though I’ve seen the show and I know what comes next I am itching with excitement to read the next volume! These are just so well written, I almost cried during this one scene toward the end, like am I okay??? Probably not 😭 loving this series so much!
These editions by VIZ still have a few errors in them. For example in one of the pages the King of Spades was called the King of Hearts etc. I hope VIZ will check their proofreaders/editors.
The story line divers a bit from the live action series, some plot points where even emitted. But it's definitively not a negative thing. I really enjoyed watching the live action series on Netflix but also really enjoy reading the manga. I wonder if the manga will focus more on action and will add a bit more of profoundness in the coming volumes. Hopefully Kyuma's (King of Clubs and my favourite character) original character is the same as in the series.
this is the one that started getting my emotions involved and I’m very intrigued about the direction we’re going…like what do you mean!? I’m very excited to continue with the series!
Alice in Borderland, Vol 4' is a tour de force in storytelling and artistry. Haro Aso continues to captivate readers with a labyrinthine plot that keeps you guessing at every turn. The characters face their most daunting challenges yet, forcing them to confront their deepest fears and insecurities. Aso's artwork remains a visual feast, perfectly capturing the atmosphere of tension and dread that permeates each page. This volume is a rollercoaster of emotions and suspense, making it impossible to put down. A must-read that further solidifies the series as a modern classic.
For fans of the Netflix series Alice in Borderland be prepared. This volume is so different from the series but no less incredible. Some backstories change and some events change. The manga is just as, if not more exciting than the show. I still get amazed with how accurately the characters in the show represent the manga versions.
A few of my favorite lines: “You try to live until the very end. That itself is the gleam of life.” “When fools start thinking too hard, things get extreme.”
I wasn't crazy about this one - we get a little more insight to how the game works, but a good amount of this feels like followup from the previous volume.
And with that we’ve completed season 1 of the show, and now my favourite games are coming up, the face cards. So many emotions and feelings in this volume, really pulled on the heartstrings. The characters are all going through different stages of existential crisis, and it’s incredibly interesting following their thought patterns and actions. This truly is an amazing manga series.
These volumes go way to fast and I love it so much. I've watched the show first and the manga has much more emotion and back story, this one in particular. It was a 4.5 and 5 and 6 are already in transit
This filled the void between the numbered cards and the face ones being a big plus compared to the TV adaptation.
Loved to see the 4 of clubs side story(also included on netflix but very differently in the storyline) also to see characters find their purpose and new missions, specially Mahiru since I don't think he was mentioned on netflix.
The interval events felt like a great way to deal with grief and find motivation to move on.
We definitely got more information about what the dealers are and what the next stage is all about.
Can't wait to see the face cards and how they're going to defeat them.
Again a great volume in an amazing series! I really enjoyed the character bonding in this one. Besides that I also enjoyed the side story a lot. I'm already curious about the next volume!
SPOILERS AHEAD :) This series has never failed to impress me. We get to see the games from another perspective in this one. The dealers are characters who pray for the deaths of players in order for their visas to be extended. The players know nothing of the dealers but the ones who survive have been killing the dealers all along. Everyone's a murderer in this series. There are some doubts which popped in my head as I was reading this volume however. The first is as follows, shouldn't all the players get a card once they win a game? Once they won the witch hunt game there should have been a ten of hearts card for every player to my knowledge. This was not the case and we are essentially told that the cards never mattered to begin with. The second is that, if the dealers have nothing to do with the game creators and one of them is asked to commit suicide, why not spill the beans about how Borderland works behind the curtain? I would have used my last breath to tell everyone how they're being manipulated since I'd be losing my life anyway. Chishiya always manages to teach me something and in this one I learned that utopia means nowhere and was first used satirically by Thomas More, the English philosopher. May the beach, Hatter, and his hopes for escape rest in peace.
I look forward to reading about the next phase of the games but at the moment, most players seem to be getting along quite well. The King of Clubs is an absolute piece of shit btw From what I've seen so far, Kyuma is going to be way different in the manga than he was in the show. Somehow Niragi survived which is insane to me. His will to live is stronger than steel. Not a fan of how the face card characters are mocking the players of Borderland. They had much more aura in the show. In the manga they're villains so far.
K. At first, I didn’t know why he was called the mad hatter other than his crazy hair, but now I understand. There’s always something going on behind the scenes, huh? I also just realised that I read the third omnibus back in November when I was in the UK. No wonder I didn’t remember much from the previous volume. I AM BACK ON TRACK NOW.
In volume 4, we finally learn more about Borderland and who created the games (although they didn’t reveal as much). I also love that we get these side stories of other characters too. I guess the beauty of the games in Alice in Borderland is that they bring out the worst in the players. Parts they never knew they had, whether it be cruelty or compassion. They're games that are meant to torture you physically and mentally. Haro Aso definitely took a deep dive into the human psyche with this series. Furthermore, the unpredictable and compelling plot keeps me engaged.
Arisu just can’t take a break, can he? I am unsure whether I like his character, but I truly love the fact that he is reflecting on himself. I feel bad for everyone, but I am excited to continue.
So glad we finally got out of the Hotel/Paradise plot. SO overstretched and long. Even the first half of this had to drag it out SO damn long for the reveal that we all could have guessed. I really did not like this first half all that much.
Luckily second half shows a flashback of a different team and it's really well done, and kind of fucked up but semi-funny ending. I also really really enjoyed the the ending with a new game. One to survive getting fucked sniped? Sign me up.
It’s been so long since I read the last volume, that this volume was for getting back into the headspace of the series and catching myself up to where the plot had left off.
I love how well this series plays as an allegory for modern society and the human condition. On top of that, it’s a very fast-paced and exciting series just on a plot level.
The gender politics aren’t that great, and the trans “reveal” was problematic, if well intentioned.
