I love this volume, and I love the current game that they’re playing in this volume, it’s one of my favorite games in the whole series! (I saw the tv show first so I was really looking forward to getting to this game) but I’m also so annoyed with this volume, because more than half of the story is dedicated to two side stories that I didn’t really care for, and it leaves off the main story with such a huge cliffhanger! The first short story about blackjack was interesting enough, but then I really didn’t care for the second short story, I just want to get back to our main characters and main story. I hope the side stories won’t be in these volumes as much going forward.
I still like the main story a lot, but it was not once but twice interrupted by less interesting side stories, even causing an unnecessary cliffhanger. It's annoying tbh.
I'm pretty annoyed that over half of this volume is given over to two multi-chapter flashback side stories. Meanwhile the main story continues into the next volume on a cliffhanger, which would have been totally unnecessary without the detours.
The first side story is about playing blackjack, which is sort of interesting, but it stars a character whose fate is known, killing any tension in the story. The second side story is just torture porn that follows a young woman through a grueling obstacle course of sorts. The last page is pretty awesome though.
The main story, such as it is, has Arisu and a group of his allies taking on the first challenge of the next stage of the games, facing off against the King of Clubs and the "citizens" of Borderland. The discussion of strategy drags on too long, and there is too much running around and despairing without purpose.
This is the first disappointing volume in the series, and I'm hoping it is an anamoly.
Not bad, but slowing down a bit, mostly because of the side stories. I still enjoy the characters mostly, but the way the women are treated and characterized is a tad cringe at times. I am interested to see how Heiya comes into this.
Volume 5 of this series really played with me emotionally!! I cannot believe it was left on such an awesome cliffhanger. I need to get my hands on volume 6!!
And that is another one down... As per, this was amazing, with 2 side stories, that served as backstories, that I really enjoyed! This whole series is definitely up there on my fave list, as I knew it would be! I can't believe I've not got that many left to get through. I've been devouring them all so much, I just can't put them down... On that note, time to devour the next volume...
Again, this is an interesting volume in the Alice in Borderland series. This volume mainly focuses on the King of Clubs game, which is an exciting and thrilling adventure full of character development. I really enjoyed this part.
Besides that, there are also two side stories: Six of Diamonds and Seven of Spades. I enjoyed both of them. In Six of Diamonds, you follow the first game of Chishiya, which is a mind-boggling gamble game. Since Chishiya is my favorite character, I really liked to read more about him. The game was complex, but with the help of the illustrations, all rules became clear. These clear illustrations are some of the things I like so much about this manga series!
In the second side story, we follow Akane her first game. This was a very thrilling and shocking game! I really felt desperate for her, but she is such a strong character who manages to survive until the bitter ends. I deeply respected her throughout her story.
In conclusion, this was again a volume I highly enjoyed! I can't wait for the next volume!
Kyuma from the King of Clubs in the live action series was my favourite character but the original character in the manga I didn't like just as much. Maybe the continuation of the game in the next volume will show his personality more.
This story is phenomenal. I feel like it is building to something that will smack readers in the face, but I hope it will turn out positive for Arisu and friends. This Volume covers 3 stories: 1.) Six of Diamonds - Our first side story has a deadly blackjack game between 5 people where there can be only one winner. Very tense tale, combining the chaos of the Borderland games with high stakes gambling. 2.) Seven of Spades - The second side story is even more brutal than the first! A group of people enter a stadium and must escape it before it collapses and is destroyed. A girl, on her first day in Borderland, goes through absolute hell and permanent bodily damage to escape the wreckage and scalding geyser waters. 3.) King of Clubs - Part one of our main story (continued in Vol 6) has Arisu, Usagi, Kuina, Tatta, and Niragi (the latter three being survivors from the Beach) caught in a game against the King of Clubs and 4 of his compatriots. The game a much more complicated version of a hybrid of Tag and Capture the Flag. Points are involved and much strategy is needed. Usagi takes center stage near the end when a plan has her outrunning to stay alive.
The story will continue in V6 and I can't wait. This is sooooo good. Strong recommend.
Yikes, this is a huge drop in quality. The majority of this omnibus is games that have convoluted rules, so I couldn’t get invested in them and lost interest. Let’s focus on the main story arc, rather than spending this much time on the minutia of the games, especially games that are tedious like blackjack and whatever this King of Clubs nonsense is. It’s super impressive how Haro Aso pulls it all off, but it’s to no good effect. The second side story is entertaining but really sexist, even though it‘a obvious that was not intended.
scoring points or osmosis is one of my least favorite games in aib (the least being balance scale but idk if that game is in the manga yet). sorry but this was so boring to get through.
side note: heiya's character is so badass and she is so slept on (besides the fact that she tries to do some weird shit with arisu and aguni). her first game, boiling death, looked so freaking difficult and literally seemed impossible to survive but the baddie did it.
I really thought we’d get in volume 5 but it better be in 6 because that was my favorite game in season 2
Anyway this is good, and i can’t imagine anyone finishing vol 4 and thinking they’d just stop reading them but if you’re on the fence definitely continue🤭
The side stories were great and knowing were this is going and when the information is going to be useful strangely made it better. I'm sort of happy I already saw the TV show, this just seams like and addition even though it came first hahaha.
Glad I bought the whole set because they didn't finish the game in this volume, guess I'll have to read the next one straight away!
I’m really enjoying the extra details in the series that you don’t see in the show, especially the side stories. There was a lot of strategy toward the beginning of this volume that started to make the pace drag, but it overall helped explain the action.
I didn't really like the last side story in this bind up but I'm still giving it 5 stars because I love this series. Plus I'm excited to see the character in the side story show up later in the series. I think that will be fun.
Could've been 5 stars but I was a bit annoyed by the fact that the main story was interrupted by side stories twice, even though I also like the side stories. It's just a bit unnecessary to do it during one of the games
