As he roams with his horse Jolly Jumper, always seeking new adventures, Lucky Luke meets two suspicious characters, Denver Miles and Colorado Bill. Together they arrive on the outskirts of a deserted city, Gold Hill, which counts only one inhabitant. The old man, Powell, is the sole survivor of a gold rush that he has not given up on, despite years without success...
The Belgian author Morris (full name Maurice de Bevere) is best known for his humorous cowboy character, Lucky Luke. Morris started his career in 1945 in Le Moustique, creating various covers and illustrations. By the end of the 1940s, Morris met his colleagues Jijé, Franquin and Will. These four artists would be called "The Gang of 4", because they all worked in Jijé's studio at that time. The first episode of Lucky Luke, 'Arizona 1880', was published in L'Almanach Spirou 1947, and was later continued in Spirou. In his early 'Lucky Luke' comics, Morris was greatly inspired by animated cartoons à la Disney. In 1949, Jijé took Morris and Franquin to the US, where Morris met Jack Davis and Harvey Kurtzman, whom he helped with their plans for Mad Magazine. He also met René Goscinny in the US. In 1955, Morris returned to Europe and collaborated with René Goscinny on 'Lucky Luke'. Goscinny wrote the scenarios of over 35 stories, which led to the great success of the series. 'Lucky Luke' is one of the best-sellers i
Oh I am a Texas cowboy Just off the stormy plains…
Another masterpiece from Morris and Goscinny, the great legends of comic book world. In this 'Lucky Luke' adventure - originally titled La Ville fantôme, Lucky Luke and Jolly Jumper, his impudent horse are roaming through the scenic horizons of American Old West when they come across two card sharks named ‘Denver Miles’ & ‘Colorado Bill’ who were thrown out of a town for cheating at the cards. Traveling together they soon arrive at an Old mining town named ‘Gold Hill’ which is all bereft of it’s old glory due to the abandonment by unsuccessful gold prospectors. It has a single occupant, an old gold miner named Powell, who is still digging around his mine looking for Gold. Soon ‘Denver Miles’ & ‘Colorado Bill’ raise to their true form and they try one plot after another to take over this mine from Powell – for the purpose of selling it for a huge amount to some unsuspecting buyers - and it is up to Lucky Luke to foil their evil plots.
Morris and Goscinny turn this seemingly mundane plot into a hugely enjoyable comic book with their mastery over story telling, humor and high-class cartoon sketches with their clever use of colors. ‘Denver Miles’ & ‘Colorado Bill’ are brilliant examples of great characterization as the artists have created one of them as a scheming dangerous fellow and the other one as a bumbling and babbling character who always inadvertently throws a spanner in his partners scheming works.
‘Gold Hill’ is a true representation of a once booming then abandoned mining towns of the old American Wild West. In the panels that showcase the town of ‘Gold Hill’, the artists have successfully captured the transformation of a once booming place into a dead town with great eye to the detail. The single cartoon panel, which shows the mass exodus of the inhabitants and the town jailer ordering a convict inside the jail to get out - with an accompanying speech bubble, “We’re closing up! Go get hanged somewhere else!” – summarizes the total abandonment of the town rather beautifully.
For anyone looking for a hilarious, easy to read comic book ‘Ghost Town’ is a great choice.
This book presents the adventures of the world's greatest cowboy, Lucky Luke. The character can shoot faster than his own shadow. In this series,Lucky Luke is protecting the old men and his gold mine,Powell from 2 suspicious characters in the first story. Powell is the only man survivor of the gold rush and still hanged on to it. This is a old pieces of comic. I was impress that this book is about a West cost cowboy but it is admitted by the European people. For someone who like to have a recollection from the childhood might this Lucky Luke series.
i really love Lucky Luke comic magazine, it's been a long time since i read it, if i'm not wrong this series is telling about an adventure of Lucky Luke with his horse Jolly Jumper and meets with Denver Miles and Colorado Bill. They searching a gold in a deserted city, Gold Hill but after many years they didn't yet success to find it ^_^"
This was a great little amusing story. It's not about anything deep, but it is comic and enjoyable. I liked the constant nods to the reader (like Lucky Luke commenting after firing about 30 bullets out of a six shooter that he should probably "reload soon"). And, if you are not careful, you might even learn a little bit about economics and gold mine cons.
Lucky Luke rode into a Ghost town one day and found it not to haunted but rather inhabited by bandits. This story revolved around how he handle them single handedly with his usual panache.
Got the Story in a Collectors Edition whit MaDalton, the Daltons, and the Psycho Doc, and the Emperor of America.
What imideatly struck me was the colore saturation. There are a lot of Panels in this Comic, where the Background, sometimes the entire Picture is just full Yellow. Sometimes dark Blue, maybe a bit Orange. This creates a strong Atmosphere, its warm, and nostalgic. The Location itselfe is nothing to write home about at all, just the good old classic Western Setting. Only the Art makes it into a great looking Story.
The Humor is nothing what makes you laught out loud, but its fare from bad, it has a lot of Charakter driven Comedy. I appreciate all the Jokes where Denver messes things up by acting to early, and "You dont shoot at Money, thats Immoral!" is a pretty decent running Gag.
The Villian Duo this Time does reminds me of the One Armed Bandit. Having clever Frauts, or Buisnessman as Villians isnt new for this Franchise, and there dont realy do anything new, but what there do is pretty entertaining.
The unique Goal of this Story is to restore a Ghost Town. Different from other Lucky Luke Storys, the Goal isnt imideatly set, if anything you might miss it completly. From the Outside its realy just some Gangster trying to mess up an old Man, and Lucky Luke trying to keep the peace.
How I saw it, Old Powls Obsession whit Gold, and the Mine is actually just the desperate Attempt to bring back the Towns People. Before the Town died, he made a lot of Memorys, and it brocke his Heart to see it die in front of his Eyes. Thats where his Line near the Start came from, where he promised his Gold would revive the abandoned Town. And over the Course of the Story, we see more of Powls good Natur, his Nostalgia, and fittingly, after he finaly got what he wanted, he had to proof himselfe. His Wish, or is the greed for Gold in the End more important?
The last Panel speaks about how Gold Hill never died again, and went on until today. It even deliveres some Numbers about the Industry, but while im sure it might be based on a real Town, you wont find the rL equivalent of Goldhill under that Name, sadly. I appreciate the detailed Ending, but Lucky Luke likes do make Epilogues like that, and I feel it just confuses People.
So after rereading it, and thinking about the Comic for quiet a while, I can say this. I liked it realy, realy, a lot. I dont think it does anything special, neighter the Art, or the Villians, the Story, or a unique Setting. Its just one of these Books who avoid feeling Generic by doing its usual thing, but realy realy well. Thats my take on it.
Dwudziesta piąta odsłona przygód znanego kowboja to kolejna świetna praca duetu Goscinny i Morris. Scenarzysta w swoim niepodrabialnym stylu łączy tu bowiem westernową akcję, dobrze dopasowany lekki humor, nutkę dramatyzmu i widowiskowości oraz nienachalną warstwę moralizatorską.
Historia w ciekawy sposób ukazuje „gorączkę złota”, a uściślając jej niezbyt przyjemne konsekwencje.
Most of this book is told from the perspective of a pair of swindlers, Denver and Colorado. The tall, sleepy Colorado is the mastermind, and Colorado his dim-witted assistant who can’t keep his mouth shut and so gets repeatedly clobbered, ruining his new hat.
They pass through a ghost town and in the nearby town of bingo creek learn that it was abandoned after a gold rush failed to pan out, but that one old miner refuses to leave. The pair of conmen hatch a plan to acquire the mine, plant some gold, and sell it.
Hijinks ensue as the bumbling villains attempt to boot the coot from the mine. Their plots involve ghosts, cattle rustling, and robbery. But Lucky luke foils them all. The climax is a gold rush, another false alarm that leads to an angry mob.
In the end Luke sends the thieves packing and the credulous and greedy townsfolk learn a lesson about the value of hard work and community as opposed to gold fever. The old prospector learns the same, even turning his back on the mine when he finds it really does contain gold.
I don’t think the climax really works since it doesn’t involve a confrontation with the villains — they’ve already been arrested and are forced to publicly confess, a confession which Luke could have extracted at any point. The conversion of the mob feels contrived as well. (Luke is able to accomplish this with a simple speech.)
The best scene is probably one where Luke inadvertently helps the thieves win a bet in the saloon by walking in at just the wrong moment.
Not as funny as billy the Kid, but the art is as impeccable as ever.

Lucky Luke and his faithful steed Jolly Jumper find themselves at Gold Hill, the proverbial ghost town of this adventure. Luke and his riding companions Denver Miles and Colorado Bill learn of the tragic story of Powell, who lives in the abandoned mining town where he has lived ever since being duped by a conman who fraudulently claimed that the town was flush with gold. The gold rush came, but no prospectors found anything of value, leaving the town completely valueless and uninhabited. Miles and Bill plan to profit what little they can off of Powell and Gold Hill, but Luke steps in to use his craftiness and talents of gunplay to ensure Powell isn't further ripped off.
It's a fun, campy tale that uses Morris' gifts for visual gags well. The story moves at a decent clip and manages to toe the line of being completely accessible for kids whilst also managing to incorporate historical context to appeal to slightly more mature readers. It's very akin to strip comics in that regard, just decompressed to span an album sized comic.
It starts out with Lucky Luke running into a couple of guys who are being run out of town, tarred and feathered. They end up later going to a ghost town. One running gag is how the shorter of the two keeps saying the wrong things and the taller guy bonks him on the head each time.
Jolly Jumper is the name of Luke's horse.
The crooks try to make money by salting a mine (which means you put a little bit of gold or something else valuable to trick people into thinking the mine will produce gold so they buy the mine up and end up going bust.)
As usual the story is really funny, the artwork neat and the story has some bits of actual truth to it.
Ceritanya bagus.
This album is among top albums of Lucky luke that actually makes you laugh out loudly..
The villains Denver Mikes & Colorado Bill are the main attraction of this album... The plans they make and get their ass kicked are very good... Especially the scene with the Bull, I literally laughed out loud jerking everyone around...
