420 books131 followersThe Belgian author Morris (full name Maurice de Bevere) is best known for his humorous cowboy character, Lucky Luke. Morris started his career in 1945 in Le Moustique, creating various covers and illustrations. By the end of the 1940s, Morris met his colleagues Jijé, Franquin and Will. These four artists would be called "The Gang of 4", because they all worked in Jijé's studio at that time. The first episode of Lucky Luke, 'Arizona 1880', was published in L'Almanach Spirou 1947, and was later continued in Spirou. In his early 'Lucky Luke' comics, Morris was greatly inspired by animated cartoons à la Disney.
In 1949, Jijé took Morris and Franquin to the US, where Morris met Jack Davis and Harvey Kurtzman, whom he helped with their plans for Mad Magazine. He also met René Goscinny in the US. In 1955, Morris returned to Europe and collaborated with René Goscinny on 'Lucky Luke'. Goscinny wrote the scenarios of over 35 stories, which led to the great success of the series.

Der wilde, wilde Westen fängt gleich hinter Arizona an
Vier Geschichten - zwei titellose Einseiter, die Titelgeschichte sowie Lucky Luke contre Cigarette Caesar - aus der Frühzeit des einsamen Cowboys. Wilde Verfolgungsjagden prägen das Geschehen; zwei unterhaltsame Szenen bleiben im Gedächtnis: Als Cigarette Cesar den Fehler macht, in einen mexikanischen Tante-Emma-Laden mit einem sehr gewieften Verkäufer zu geraten, und später der Corrida-Stier, der in einer Pause auch mal einen Kampf beobachten darf.
Interessant die Unterschiede der Zeichungen - ballonartige Figuren in "Arizona 1880", eher dem bekannten Aussehen Lucky Lukes folgende Gestalten in den restlichen Geschichten.
Erneut ein Frühwerk des Zeichners, das noch sehr an Zeitungsstrips erinnert. Auch wenn sie unterhaltsam sind: eher was für Komplettisten.

In zijn beginjaren was Lucky Luke niet alleen de snelste schutter van het Wilde Westen, maar ook de snelst veranderende stripfiguur van de wereld. Deze snelle ontwikkeling is goed te zien in Arizona. Deze begint met het aller-allereerste Lucky Luke-verhaal, 'Arizona 1880' uit 1946. Het lijkt hier alsof Morris een boek met de titel 'hoe teeken ik teekenfilmfiguren' heeft gelezen, want alle personage zijn opgebouwd uit cirkels, ovalen en peervormen in de beste Disney-tekenfilmtraditie (een zelfde invloed zie je in de Bommelstrip uit die tijd). Lucky Luke is alleen maar herkenbaar aan de kleuren van zijn kleding. Bovendien bevat het verhaal veel tekenfilmachtige actie, bijv. het gevecht tussen Lucky Luke en Big Belly, die meer dan drie pagina's beslaat.
In de twee 1-pagina-gags die volgen, is Lucky Luke alweer van uiterlijk veranderd, maar pas in 'Lucky Luke tegen Caeasar Sigaret' (het zevende Lucky Luke-verhaal, uit 1949) begint hij op zichzelf te lijken, zij het in piepjonge vorm. Morris' tekenstijl is nu veel eigener en oorspronkelijker geworden. De tekenfilm-invloeden zijn echter nog niet verdwenen. Non avevo mai letto prima d'ora un albo di Lucky Luke del solo Morris, ed è una sorpresa.
Non del tutto positiva aggiungerei, perché lo stile grafico di Morris nel 1949 era ben lontano da quello a cui siamo abituati ed anche le sue storie sono diverse da quelle che più tardi gli scrisse Goscinny.
Nella prima storia, Arizona, Morris dona a Luke un mascellone incredibile ed i personaggi sono molto sullo stile caricaturale e a volte grottesco di Walt Disney o del Tezuka di quegli stessi anni. Le storie puntano molto sulle gag, con una violenza sempre comica.
Nella seconda storia, Lucky Luke contro Cigarettes Cesar, assistiamo ad un lungo e divertente inseguimento in Messico, con una presa in giro niente male della corrida ed una serie di gag stereotipate, ma ancora divertenti, sui messicani.
Tra le due storie un paio di brevi gag a singola pagina, di cui la prima, con Jolly Jumper, decisamente divertente.
Nel complesso questo albo, ristampa anastatica di quello del lontano 1949, regge ancora abbastanza bene e si merita le 3 stelle.

Pistolarul Lucky Luke și al său bun prieten, calul Jolly Jumper, se găsesc prinși în mijlocul unor noi aventuri 🐎 Aurul adus din mine este mereu prădat de hoți și urmărirea lui Cigarette Cezar sunt firele narative ce îi așteaptă pe împătimiții vestului sălbatic în paginile acestui volum plin de acțiune și umor 💰
Tare faină e cartea, fiind o lectură relaxantă, pe care să o dai gata în jumătate de oră 🤓 Pe mine m-a transpus direct în timpul epocii de aur a vestului sălbatic american, unde legea o făcea rapiditatea cu care puteai să tragi cu arma, iar goana după aur era principala ocupație a oamenilor 🤠 De citit alături de celelalte volume ale seriei, sunt minunate ❤️

Indubbiamente un Morris primissima maniera che sta ancora sperimentando e con lo stile e con la sceneggiatura. Manca il tocco maturo e tondo degli anni a venire, manca uno stile tutto proprio, completamente staccato dall'imitazione dei cartoni animati a-là "Tex Avery Show". Manca Goscinny e l'impronta definita che lascerà sul personaggio di Lucky Luke, rendendo il suo umorismo raffinato e paradossale.
Non mancano le situazioni divertenti ma è ancora tutto in boccio e, sì, il vecchio stile di Morris rende praticamente irriconoscibile Luke, facendomelo apprezzare ben poco... ma, insomma, da qualche parte bisogna pur cominciare!

Kenapa ya terjemahan baru Lucky Luke versi Elex Media agak mengecewakan, very disappointed! Banyak typos dan banyak menggunakan kata "nggak" daripada "tidak" [annoying..:]. Bu Niken, gimana niy??? Gambarnya sendiri versi th.1971, mungkin waktu Morris baru mulai menggambar Lucky Luke, jadi rada aneh - tapi yang penting ceritanya lumayan. Yang jelek cuman terjemahannya, tapi tetep aja dibeli..ha3

Lucky Luke: Arizona zawiera dwie westernowe historie. Pierwsza z nich przenosi kowboja w okolicę Nugget City, gdzie grasuje szajka napadające na dyliżanse przewożące złoto. Rewolwerowiec znalazł się w dobrym miejscu o właściwej porze, aby uratować konwojenta cennego kruszcu. Teraz musi on podążyć zostawionymi śladami i ostatecznie rozprawić się z okolicznymi bandytami. W drugiej historii Luke wybiera się do Meksyku, podążając tam tropem znanego przestępcy nazywanego Papierosowym Cezarem. Kraina kaktusów i tequili przywita go wieloma problemami, z którymi będzie musiał on sobie jakoś poradzić. Weźmie on między innymi udział w zmaganiach korridy, gdzie zmierzy się z poszukiwanym bandytą i stadem wściekłych byków.
Tak jak zostało wspomniane, mamy tutaj do czynienia z jedną z pierwszych przygód LL. Historia „Arizona” powstała końcem lat 40. kiedy to autor serii daleki był jeszcze od jej ostatecznego kształtu (do którego przywykli fani na całym świecie). Morris (podobnie jak wielu innych artystów) w tym okresie bardzo mocno fascynował się animacjami Disneya. Starał się on przełożyć ten właśnie styl na komiksową formę, co doskonale widoczne jest w oprawie rysunkowej. Luke, gdyby niecharakterystyczny strój to byłby trudny do rozpoznania (nawet dla największych fanów). Odmienna jest tutaj również struktura samej opowieści. Nie występują tu charakterystyczne gagi i próby ukrycia głębszego przesłania pod wierzchnią warstwą scenariusza. Zaprezentowana akcja ma wiele z typowego westernu, jednocześnie stara się czerpać wiele pomysłów z klasycznych w tamtym okresie kreskówek. Całość może nie jest jakoś nadmiernie zachwycająca, ale dość przyjemna w odbiorze i warta sprawdzenia. W bardziej współczesne tony uderza druga z dostępnych tu historii. Graficznie prezentuje się ona tak jak późniejsze tomy. Morris zdecydowanie mocniej stawia w niej na prosty slapstickowy humor wymieszany z akcją, co mimowolnie wywołuje zadowolenia na twarzy czytelnika.

I have a 1978 paperback reprint in French from Dupuis (originally published in 1951) which has languished for a couple of decades in the attic.
Although this is the third album in this series to be published by Dupuis, it contains the very first Lucky Luke story, first serialised in Spirou magazine in 1946, Arizona 1880. This story is interesting as it shows Morris’ style to have been hugely influenced by American animations - and indeed Morris began as an animator in a Belgian studio, who spent several years in the USA learning the trade. Thereafter, Morris slowly but surely found his own expression, but remained deeply influenced by the Wild West. This series codified all of the tropes, hitting on the perfect formula very early on and successfully repeating it time and again with the most recognisable of heroes who is merely a cypher: the passing good guy who always wins but about whom nothing is known and nothing needs to be known.
That said, the two stories and two one page gags in this collection are just curios now as they are not good, but they are representative of the Franco-Belgian comics industry at its very beginnings, the work of a founding father.
I have read this many times and hence it should be a four stars, but I am very unlikely to read it again after clearing the attic.

Dva kratší příběhy z dřevních dob, kdy se Lucky Luke formoval, čemuž odpovídá především kresba. Příběhy jsou částečně složené z menších gagů a jednostránkových grotesek. Zároveň je tu i plno retro akce ve stylu předválečných animáků.
