Great book of delightful essays about living in Mexico, from the perspective of an Irish-American based in Guadalajara. Some essays are laugh-out-loud funny; others explore serious subjects. All contain valuable insights about Mexico. One of my favorite chapters is "Los Tigres del Norte," that captures the sights and sounds of attending an all-night concert near Guadalajara with his wife.

But the author isn't just another expat. He's a prolific poet/novelist/historian/novelist/short-story-writer who has published more than twenty books. His major work, "The Irish Soldiers of Mexico," took six years to research and write. The backstory became an MGM movie staring Tom Berenger (One Man's Hero) and spawned three documentaries. His latest book, "Abraham Lincoln and Mexico," which uses archival documents to examine Lincoln's support for Mexico as congressman and president, is in schools and libraries across the USA. Hogan knows Mexico, and he knows history.
