This brief and accessible supplementary text provides the historical and cultural background necessary to understanding how early philosophy developed, along with solid philosophical exposition, analysis and critique. It is at once both highly readable and philosophically responsible.
I read this book for my Ancient and Medieval Philosophy class and I have to say it is a good introduction to Pre-Socratic thought. The reason it is limited to four stars is that the writing comes across as very informal but also as very dull, so it really is the worst of both worlds. I would say that you should read this book as a primer for Pre-Socratic thought/as part of a broader curriculum on Ancient Philosophy, and I suppose that is what it was intended for. The attempt to be informal and relatable in an obviously academic examination of Pre-Socratics was annoying, though.
