I was just a little girl, fast asleep in my stroller, the day my mother was killed. I don’t remember anything about the sunny day that turned so dark.
But now, twenty years later, when the man walks towards me in the shadows of an empty street, his eyes on me for just a fraction too long, a shiver goes down my spine. I recognise his face from the picture in the papers. He killed my mother.
I try to run but he wants me to listen. He says that he is innocent, that the police got it wrong, and that my family have been lying to me for years.
My father and sister tell me to stay away from him. They remind me that because of him my mother never got to tuck me in at night or ease me through my first heartbreak. My boyfriend begs me to ignore him and says he could be dangerous. But when he is found dead, I am shaken to my core. Who needed to keep him quiet?
I won’t feel safe until I find out what he wanted to tell me. And when I go to his flat and find a photo that proves he was telling the truth, I suspect that the person who killed my mother is far closer to home than I could have imagined. What dark secrets are the people I love hiding? And if I search for the truth, am I placing my own life in danger?
Jess’s mom, Lori, was brutally murdered in a park while walking Jess in her stroller. There was a suspect, but due to a lack of evidence he was never convicted.
Now, more than 20 years later, the suspect approaches Jess and tells her he was not only innocent, he was madly in love with her mother. She wants to investigate his claim further, but he is killed before she can. Her entire family encourages Jess to let it go and let sleeping dogs lie.
But it’s soon clear to Jess that there are secrets in her family and she continues in her quest to arrive at the truth. Narrated by Jess in the current day, and in the past by her mother, the story began to drag with a lack of suspense and no reveals or new information, despite a lot of red herrings and foreshadowing.
The book ended with a confession monologue and an epilogue that had a nice twist. The book kept me interested enough to continue reading, but, in the end, it had too many plot holes and unlikely circumstances to make this a memorable read.
· The narrator of the audiobook did a fine job, but with only one female narrator for two female POV, I was often confused about whose chapter I was listening to. Two narrators would have made for a better listening experience. · I received a digital audio copy of the book via NetGalley. All opinions are my own · A buddy read with my friend Marilayce, do check out her review to see what she thought!
Firstly I would like to thank netgalley, and Bookoutune, and the author Kathryn croft for an early copy of her book.
This is the first psychological book I've read in a long while, and I'm not keen on books that go back to the past and present. This book did come together nicely. Jess mother was murdered whe jess was a baby, years later a man approaches her she recognises him,The guy who murdered her mother. Claiming he was innocent, Did he murder her? She needed answers from her father he wasnt helping her find the truth. Would rate this book 3.5 rounded to four..was abit of a slow read.with a great ending. Looking forward to reading more of her books..
It was twenty years ago that Jess's mother was murdered when Jess was in her stroller taking a walk with her mom, in a local park. Her mother, Lori, was a single parent although very much attached to the father of Jess. However, a secret sends Lori into a tailspin and might eventually have led to her death.
The story reverts back and forth between the now, which is Jess's story, and the then which is Lori's. It all comes to a head when a man named Nathaniel contacts Jess with a claim he is not the man who murdered her mother. Although no evidence exists to say Nathaniel did, it was believed he was the killer so Jess is terrified. As she investigates, she is dragged into the past and she herself feels the brunt of lies which have been fed to her for ages. Her sole goal is to find the truth, but can she as she becomes embroiled with deceitful characters and feels threatened by what she once held dear, find the answer she seeks?
Being raised by her real father and his "new" wife has generally been a fine experience for Jess even though tension comes crashing down upon her as she learns the extent of her family's secret.
The book starts slow and there are some plot holes but overall it is a satisfying story that is easy to read and offers a challenging question to the reader. Who killed Lori and who is lying?
Thank you to Kathryn Croft, Bookouture Audio, and NetGalley for a copy of this story which has already published. Thanks to my book buddy, Jan, for reading this one with me.
Told in two timelines, The Suspect kept me on my toes doing on my own super sleuthing while trying to figure out who killed Jess's mother. Secrets and lies are the name of the game here. But who is lying and what secret are they protecting? There is a sense of need and want in this book. Jess was just a little girl asleep in her stroller when her mother was murdered. She has no memory of that day. She has been told who killed her mother but when he approaches her and proclaims his innocence, Jess searches for the truth. She not only wants to know what happened to her mother but needs to know. She wants the truth so that she has closure. But will searching for the truth put her in danger?
The past storyline is told by Jess's mother. The present is told by Jess. I loved the going back and forth and learning more details the same time that Jess did. I enjoyed the suspense, tension and mystery in this book. I felt for Jess as she longed to know the truth. I also felt for her mother as well. I could feel her frustration as she wanted answers, and some were not being forthcoming with her.
This was a gripping murder mystery that was intriguing, full of twists and had a jaw dropping ending.
I had both the book and audiobook and felt the narrator did a great job.
Thank you to Bookouture and Bookouture Audio and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
This character driven thriller drew me in immediately. Jealousy, betrayal and deception come together to create an enticing mystery. Jess is confronted by her mother’s supposed killer. When his body is found later, her world is turned upside down. Everything she has been told about her mother’s murder is put into question. Has she been lied to by the one’s closest to her? If so, what are they hiding? Kathryn Croft expertly crafts a mystery that kept me guessing until the unexpected conclusion. The narration added an element of intrigue and suspense. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for my audiobook.
IK was just a little girl, fast asleep in my stroller, the day my mother was killed. I don't remember anything about the sunny day that turned so dark. But now, twenty years later, when the man walks towards me in the shadows of an empty street, his eyes on me for just a fraction too long, a shiver goes down my spine. I recognise his face from the pictures in the papers. He killed my mother. I try to run but he wants me to listen. He says that he is innocent, that the police got it wrong, and that my family have been lying to me for years.
Jess wants to find out the truth after the man who had killed her mother told her he was innocent. Her father and half-sister had been lying to her for twenty years. But before she can get any answers, the man has been found dead. Someone doesn't want Jess to get the answers she's looking for. Could her own life be in danger?
I was pulled quickly into this story. It has a dual timeline - the past, twenty years ago and the present day. The past is told from her mother's point of view and the present day from Jess's point of view. This is a well written murder mystery with well-rounded characters. There are lots of twists. Will Jess be able to find out the truth? And will she like what she finds out?
I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #KathrynCroft for my ARC of #TheSuspect in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this melancholic domestic drama. Although the jumps between the mother's past and daughter's present tripped me up a few times at the start, I got the hang of it and grew to appreciate getting to know each of them and wishing they'd gotten the opportunity too!
Jess's mom was murdered when she was a child. There was a suspect but charges were never brought. Now, as an adult herself, she is approached on the street by the man she was told killed her mom.
At first she doesn't entertain anything he's saying but it starts to make sense so she decides to hear him out. He tells her everything will change once she knows the truth but he never gets to deliver it because he's killed.
Jess is now on a quest to find out who wanted to keep him quiet and why. Could she be in danger too? Her family is very private so they don't take well to old resentments and secrets being pushed to the surface. Did she ever know them at all?
This was a relaxing mystery that I finished pretty quickly on audio and the narration was great. I never know what to expect from this author because she keeps me on my toes, but I'm always impressed. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to listen and review!
It is a rainy day here. What is your weather like? What is your favorite season?
The Suspect by Kathryn Croft (Book review) Mystery - Available on February 8th.
The Suspect is a very intriguing story that keeps you guessing. Nearly every chapter, I changed my mind about who the guilty party was. Getting to know the characters at the beginning of the book does require your attention. It was a pleasure reading this thought-provoking book by Kathryn Croft.
Synopsis: Jess was a little girl sleeping in a child's buggy in a park when her mother was murdered. She does not remember the crime or who did it.
After twenty years, Jess was approached by a man she recognized from a newspaper clipping. The man was accused of murdering her mother. According to him, the police got it wrong, and he is innocent. All these years, has her family lied to Jess? She is determined to uncover the truth.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for sharing this book with me. Your kindness is appreciated.
This wasn't bad but it wasn't great. Just average, good enough. The characters' actions were hard to believe and didn't match up which was frustrating. Many of the twists were predictable. There was a lot of filler that made the story really drag. Still, I managed to enjoy the main plot and the small town setting. Despite parts that were too long and slow, this was a quick read.
5🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 This book was such a great read with intriguing and suspenseful story-lines. I finished it in one day because it immediately grabbed me. The book has two POV's Jessica and her mom, Lori which intertwine with a then and now. Jessica has been living her life under the influence that a random man killed her mother. She starts investigating and questioning everyone in hopes to see what really happened and who really did it. We learn that her family has so many secrets buried as events start unraveling. I enjoyed the twists of the suspects and just when I thought they'd live happily ever after boom two more secrets linger. This is the first time I've read anything from Kathryn Croft and hopefully not the last. The audio format was greatly narrated by Tamsin Kennard. Thank you NetGalley so much for this Audiobook ARC, I truly enjoyed this 5 Star Read. #TheSuspect #NetGalley #ThrillerBooks
Everyone has told Jess Nathan killed her mother. Suddenly one day he is there wanting to tell ger something important. All of a sudden secrets begin to unravel and the danger LEVEL rises. JESS does nit k ow who to trust or what yo believe.
Told from jess and her mother's point of view over 2 timelines... The story hooks you in with its twists and turns. The character are well developed and you read on desperately looking to solve the mystery. It builds up to a big reveal and a final twist. Its well written just enough is tild of Jesse's mum relationships to give the story and characters depth . Like lufe it foes leave tge reader with unanswered questions. A real good page turner. Throughly recommended
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Kathryn Croft, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 2nd February 2023.
This is the first book I have read by this author.
I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful and eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is 'An absolutely addictive read that will have you racing through the pages and questioning everything you thought you knew about your family. Perfect for fans of The Girl on the Train, Lisa Jewell and Shari Lapena ' I am a huge fan of 'The Girl On The Train', Lisa and Shari so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of a prologue, 44 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in London, England 🏴, UK 🇬🇧. I always enjoy when books are set in the UK as I'm from Wales and have sometimes visited areas mentioned in the book. This makes it easier to picture where the scenes are set at times. I have actually visited London recently so am looking forward to seeing if I recognise any areas mentioned.
This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonist is Jess and Lori Gray. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.
This book is fantastically written with vivid descriptions that absolutely grip the readers attention and puts them right in the middle of it all feeling the hair raise on your arms and feeling the sweat run down your back.
This book is an interesting crime mystery set in London. The book does start off slow but does pick up further into the storyline and then you find yourself on a rollercoaster ride of twists and turns. I enjoyed that it is told from the points of view of multiple protagonists and over multiple timelines as it gives the reader a bigger picture of what was going on and when it happened and why events came to be. The past is told to us from the perspective of Lori and is set twenty years ago and the present is told from Jess's perspective and set in present day. I enjoyed the fact it is set in a small town and the main plot was intriguing. There were several points where I suspected each of the main characters and there were several twists. I had no idea who the killer was and was shocked when it was revealed!! A huge congratulations to Kathryn as it is getting harder and harder to surprise me as I have read so many crime novels but you managed to do just that! The storyline is filled with drama, mystery, lies, suspense, tension,, twists, romance and crime. I was kept on my toes trying to work out who was lying and who did what throughout. I always enjoy trying to work out who the killer is in these types of books and I had lots of fun trying to guess who it was in this one. I loved the jaw dropping ending which I was not expecting at all!! It ia a suspenseful, intriguing crime thriller that once it has you hooked keeps you in its pages until the very end. There were a few times I became confused in regards to who's perspective I was reading from and with the amount of friends and family that was involved but I worked it all out by then end.
It is set over multiple time lines. When books show what has happened in the past and what is happening in the present I find it really helps the reader (if it is well done) understand why things are happening and what has lead to the present activities and decisions. It also shows the bigger picture.
This is one of the few books that I have listened 100% on Audiobook. If I listen to a book on audiobook I usually also read the physical book between but for the second time I listened to the whole book and I was impressed! I must say a HUGE congratulations to the narrator Tamsin Kennard who did a great job bringing this story to life. I would listen to it in the car and while walking at any opportunity and Tamsin did a fantastic job on both male and female characters voices!!! I'm not only looking forward to reading more books by Kathryn but also to listening to more books narrated by Tamsin! I have also listened to 'Her First Child' by Sheryl Browne which was also narrated by Tamsin. She did an amazing job with that book too and would highly recommend it.
The characters are realistic, strong and each have their own unique personalities. I really liked Lori and Jess and enjoyed their character development throughout the book. I felt sorry for Jess who just wanted to know the truth about who killed her mother. I could feel her frustration through the book and Tamsin really brought her and her mother to life through her narration. I love Jess' determination and her refusal to stop asking questions to get the answers she is looking for. She is a determined and strong woman who will stop at nothing to find out the truth that she both wants to and needs to know. Regardless of whether you love or hate the characters they all jump out of the pages and play their parts perfectly. I am looking forward to reading more books by Kathryn and seeing what she comes up with next!
Make sure you read to the very end of the book to read the prologue and first chapter of Kathryn's 'The Girl With No Past' which are promising to be just as good as this book and I look forward to reading it!
Overall an intriguing mystery that has a jaw dropping twist at the end!

What an interesting book! It is told in two timelines. One is of the Mother and the events leading up to her murder. The second is twenty plus years later where the daughter is seeking answers to who killed her Mother. There is a wide cast of characters and a lot going on in this suspenseful novel. There is a dysfunctional family with their secrets and then there is the man, suspected of her murder, claims to only have loved her. Everyone here is a suspect!
Jess was a toddler when her mother (Lori) was murdered while taking her on a walk in the park. Now, so many years after her mother was killed, Jess is approached by the main suspect of the murder. He tracked her down to tell her he is innocent and that someone else killed Lori. Jess is close to finding out who when he is also murdered and this helps Jess see that someone is trying to keep the truth about her mother’s death hidden.
I loved all of the twists and turns, had me feeling like an investigative journalist😂😂 Almost all the time I went like “oh it’s definitely you” and then I see a new hint and I’m like “or maybe it’s you?”. It was a good read. I recommend.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. I loved it❤️.
The Suspect is told in a dual timeline. Jess’s mother Laurie was brutally murdered in 1993 when Jess was a toddler. Jess has no recollection as to the events that happened the day her mother was murdered. As an adult those closest to Jess don’t speak freely about it. They would rather forget it happened. One day a man approaches Jess, he was a suspect in her mother’s murder and pleads to Jess he is innocent and always has been. He would have never hurt Laurie. Rattled by this news Jess wants answers, and wants the truth. The timeline is goes back and forth from where Jess is at currently and the other dates back to days leading up to Laurie’s death.
I really wanted to like this book. I thought the premise was solid to be a good murder mystery plot with a cat and mouse chase. However, I was let down. The book was overwritten. I found no bond with any of the characters. The characters and plot were just flat. I did not find any excitement in the story. It seemed very amateur to me.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of the book to review. All opinions are my own.
This was my first novel by Kathryn Croft and I was excited to dive right in. This tale has palpable tension by the bucketload that saw the pages turning so rapidly that resulted in me finishing this marvellous thriller in one sitting. Taut and suspenseful, it is so well plotted and crafted. An engrossing, immersive read with themes of sibling rivalry and adultery. Very highly recommended.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Bookouture via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
It has been twenty years since Jess lost her mother to a brutal murder. Only two at the time, Jess has no memories of that devastating loss. Always curious about the loss of her mother, she becomes obsessed about finding out what happened. Her mother was named Lori. One day Jess is approached by a stranger who insists on talking to her so that he can tell her that he was wrongly accused of her mother’s murder. Now Jess really wants to know what happened, once and for all.
The first person she goes to is her father. After all, wouldn’t he want to know the truth as well? Shockingly, he tells Jess to leave things alone. He is unwilling to discuss things further. Adamant even. This pushes Jess even further. She has so many questions and the more she wants to know, the more she learns. She begins to unravel a web of deceit, lies and secrets.
This is a dual timeline story. We have Jess now, in the present. But then there is Lori, before her death. There is a story to be told and Kathryn Croft does it perfectly. She pulls the reader into both the story of the present but also the story of the past. The twists were many, and the ending was truly shocking, thus making her The Suspect a well-written, captivating story. I was able to listen to this thrilling book that was smoothly narrated by Tamsin Kennard, making this an even more compelling read.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
I found this easy to read but somewhat drawn out with reveals that were quite easy to work out early on. Some of the characters' motivations were difficult to believe. An average read which could benefit from more intrigue and complexity.
I received this arc from netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
The Suspect by Kathryn Croft (Goodreads Author) Tamsin Kennard (Narrator)
The publisher's (Bookouture) blurb on NetGalley really intrigued me and I am grateful to both of them for this audio ARC, along w/author Kathryn Croft. I was excited how this psychological thriller unfolded with a strong female protagonist, Jess. The initial drama is told upfront in the publisher's blurb stipulating Jess shouldn't trust a particular man, who recently contacted her, because he "murdered her mother", so that cat is out of the bag right away and everyone should be clenching their teeth and holding their breath for Jess. The narration by Tamsin Kennard was spot on.
This suspenseful novel is delivered in 2 timelines: Current day with Jess as an adult, while the 2nd features her now-deceased mother, Lori, when Jess was just a baby. As the chapters tick away, Jess discovers some truths and lies told to her by her close-mouthed family, but is really interested in what this man has to say. She simply wants to know what happened to the mother she never really knew. The suspense increases as Jess takes some risks and as we learn more about her mother's and father's pasts. It had me stay up late into the early mornings listening to this great story. Towards the end, things were even more suspenseful and it sped up so quickly with more red herrings and surprises and lies.....almost like I was on a rollercoaster.
Keep your suspension of disbelief because Jess is worth it!
Thank you Netgalley for the audio copy in exchange for a honest review. When a man approaches Jess in the street she is transported back twenty years to her mothers murder. This is the man accused of her murder. He tries to talk to Jess claiming he is innocent and loved her mum. Her family tell her he is a dangerous man. Who is telling the truth and is Jess safe?
My Review: OMG, loved!!!!! Thanksgiving literally flew right by me and I have no regrets. I only stopped to eat the ham dinner my husband made then I continued on. I couldn’t help myself. I couldn’t put this down for the life of me. I had to find out what was going to happen next otherwise I would have never gotten any sleep that night. This author is one of my favorites and so was this read. It had everything that I look for in a great book. The characters were all sneaky, the story line was interesting and it had a shocking ending I never saw coming. I couldn’t ask for a better book. Now let’s talk a little bit about this one. All the characters had something to hide even those that had good in them. I have to admit it was fun finding out all those secrets. Some of them were horrific and some were forgivable acts. Next up is the plot. It kept me intrigued the whole way through. What I loved the most though was it went from the past to present and switched character perspectives every other chapter. We got to see what was going on while an event was happening along with seeing everything through other peoples eyes. It was wonderful and then it came full circle to that heart attack of an ending. I couldn’t believe it. It did feel good though when all the secrets were let out and finally we got to see the full story unfold. This author did a fantastic job and I can’t wait to read more of her books.
In conclusion, the plot, the characters and all the twists in this book made this book an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I had high hopes for this one after reading the reviews. Unfortunately for me I found it slow and a bit boring. The ending didn't really come as any surprise. Bit disappointed really.
Jess was just two years old when her mother was killed on Clapham Common as she sat in her stroller, screaming with tears streaming down her face. She didn't know the person who struck her mother but her mother did as she begged for her daughter's safety.
Now twenty eight years later, Jess lives a secluded life, works from her home studio as a photographer and is afraid of parks. After what happened to her mother, Jess can never set foot in them without thinking of what she lost that day. And the man who took it away from her...and got away with it. Then one day, she sees his face in a crowd watching her...recognises his face from the papers. He killed her mother but the police couldn't gather enough evidence to charge him...and so he walks free. But is he really?
Nathaniel French approaches Jess one day with the sole intent on telling her what he knows; what he has discovered. But understandably she doesn't believe him. Why should she? All her life she has been told that he is the man who killed her mother. It's what everyone thinks, despite no charges ever being laid.
Jess has always wanted to know the truth about what happened to her mother but thought that would never happen. When Nathaniel approached her in the street she was quick to dismiss him but reluctantly hears him out. Before they part he presses a business card into her hand with his phone number on. At first she doesn't entertain anything he has to say but the more she thinks about it, the more it starts to make sense. Maybe he is innocent after all. He drip-feeds her bits of information but is reluctant to discuss it over the phone and they arrange to meet. But he never arrives. A few days later, he is found dead. And everything he had to tell her died with him.
Now Jess is suspicious. If Nathaniel really was innocent then someone had a very good reason to silence him before he revealed the truth to Jess. But the question was, who? Jess decides to do a little digging and in doing so makes some startling discoveries along the way. Someone had been following Nathaniel and he expressed fear for his safety. Now Jess fears that someone is following her too. But why? What do they think she knows?
In her quest to delve into her mother's murder, Jess finds herself up against a lot of resistance from her family. Her mother's family, her father - they all claim they are a private family and have no wish for everything to be dragged back up all over again. But doesn't Jess deserve to know the truth? Doesn't her mother deserve justice?
Meanwhile, her sister Zara is intent on hooking her up with a friend of her boyfriend's, Gabriel, insisting that he is just an all round nice guy. And he is, when they inadvertently meet. Jess is reluctant to admit that she likes him but she is still nursing her wounds over the end of her previous relationship with longtime boyfriend Harrison, with whom she has remained friends. In fact, it is Harrison who proves to be the most trustworthy and the one Jess can count on throughout all that's to come.
This is my first foray into Kathryn Croft (from memory) and I enjoyed the journey very much. Throughout the story I had so many questions about things that didn't add up, didn't make sense which had me investigating the mystery alongside Jess. But unlike Jess, as the reader I was privy to her mother's narrative in the past timeline which gave me the building blocks to begin theorising what I think happened. I was scratching my head for much of the book until a "big secret" (that I didn't think was so huge) was revealed and slowly the pieces began to fall into place. I had longed pieced it all together before the final reveal but it didn't ruin the mystery for me. In fact I love it when I am able to work it out before the book's conclusion.
In story unfolds through Jess in the present day and Lori, her mother, in the past in 1992 and 1993. I have to say some of what Lori did was questionable to say the least. None of her behaviour made a whole lot of sense, even when she confessed to it, except when it came to Jess. I loathed her mother and sister and didn't see why Lori couldn't be honest with them about her situation. Maybe then she wouldn't have died needlessly...who knows? But then if she didn't die, there wouldn't be a story, would there? And everyone's behaviour was suspect to say the least. Every. Single. One. Of. Them. I really felt for Lori. All she wanted was the best life for Jess...and she so nearly had it.
Overall, THE SUSPECT is a compelling mystery filled with secrets, lies and deceptions spanning three decades. I thoroughly enjoyed it. My one complaint would be with the epilogue. I felt it only needed Jess' narrative; the second narrative following hers spoilt it.
I would like to thank #KathrynCroft, #NetGalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #TheSuspect in exchange for an honest review.
This is a rollercoaster ride from beginning to end! This is a new author to me, and I was not disappointed at all! This is one of those where even though you have stuff to do or want to go to bed, you will lie to yourself and say, "I'm just going to read one more chapter," and then it's 3 AM. So I will say this, Croft does an insanely outstanding job at keeping you guessing though out the story. Just when I think I solved this thing, something would happen, and I would be completely wrong! Lori is out for a walk with her infant daughter Jess, and while it seems like everything is good and nothing unfortunate can happen, the most sinister thing does! She is murdered. Nathaniel is the main suspect in the murder; they did not have enough evidence to hold him, let alone convict him. Now, years later Nathaniel finds Jess and states that he did not kill her mother and that she needs to get to the bottom of who killed her mother. The story spans between the present day with Jess and 1993. While Jess is hunting for her mother's killer and looking into the past, she finds out that many of her family members have been keeping secrets. Will she get to the bottom of who killed her mother? Read this one full of twists and turns and an adventure! I listened to the audiobook; it was compelling and kept my attention the whole time! I loved it! The narrarator was a perfect fit for this mystery! I want to extend my gratitude to Negally and Bookouture Audio for this extraordinary adventure full of twists and turns!

Jess's mom was murdered about 30 years ago when Jess was 2 years old. She was raised by her dad and step mother but her mother's murder was never solved. When the one man who had been under the most suspicion for Lori's murder makes contact with Jess, she feels compelled to start investigating what really happened.
4.5 stars.
I love books where secrets of the past are uncovered, so I loved the premise of this one. There were enough people acting suspiciously that I really wasn't sure who was guilty and who was up to what. I really liked this as I have liked pretty much everything I have read from this author.

"My family said he killed my mother. They lied
All happiness in Jess vanishes in a heartbeat when a man from her past walks towards her.. she recognise his face from the picture in the papers. He killed her mother. But did he? When Nate denies being the killer, Jess tries everything to uncover the truth in this new revelation and find out who truly did.
Lots of secrets and lies. This book was enjoyable throughout. But I felt the synopsis gave a lot away. 1 was not surprised by most of the turn in events but i still liked it anyway.
But I was rather annoyed by Jess's mom throughout the book and blame her for everything that happened, if you and your child is unsafe, you open up to other people, period. But i still felt sorry for her, no one deserves to die right?
This is the best book I've read this year! I can't express how much I loved it. There's a twist that you don't see coming. This book is about a woman who lost her mother way too young. She was murdered and the person she thought killed her contacted her 28 years later. She finds out that nothing is what it seems, not her friends or her family. This book is a page turner or, in this case, a thrilling listen from the first second. I listened to the audiobook, and Tamsin Kennard did a superb job narrating. I could listen to her speak all day. She gave life to all the characters and kept me enthralled.

I was hooked on this story immediately, it just draws you in straight away.
The story flips between Jess Now and her mum Lori Then which I enjoyed as you get the build up to what the truth actually is from both sides.
I had two suspects in mind but I wasn’t sure because how could they have done that?, the author gave you a few red herrings and hints and maybe I was swayed by them ha!.
The two HUGE twists had me reeling! I just couldn’t believe it, if you like to be shocked read this fantastic book.
