I SILENZI CHE SERVONO PER ASCOLTARE SE STESSI
Il mio primo Robinson: “Le avventure di Robinson Crusoe”, teleserie francese del 1964 che la RAI mandava in onda di pomeriggio all’interno del contenitore denominato “La TV dei ragazzi”. Il protagonista, Robert Hoffman, attore austriaco, debuttò con questa teleserie per poi diventare il protagonista maschile dei film dedicati ad Angelica (Michelle Mercièr).
Medico taciturno sopravvissuto a un naufragio, Matthew conosce a una festa Phoebe, professoressa di letteratura comparata, alla quale in punto di morte racconta la sua storia, che lei racconta a noi lettori perché ha promesso al suo morente amato che l’avrebbe scritta.
Il racconto si divide in due parti: la navigazione lungo la costa africana, da Sant'Elena fino a Sào Tomé, l'assalto dei pirati, l'uccisione dei compagni di viaggio, la deriva in alto mare e l'approdo sull'isola.
Qui Matthew incontra uno degli assalitori, Nelson Souza, al quale aveva sparato durante l'arrembaggio e che credeva morto.
In questa prima parte, raccontata dalla donna, Matthew si adatta alla vita dell'isola e alle strane leggi che Souza detta con la sua rivoltella.
Nel seguito, Prendel prende la parola in prima persona, e ci porta dentro alla lotta tra i due naufraghi per il dominio dell'isola.

A un certo punto mi sono accorto che stavo coprendo con una mano la parte bassa della pagina per impedire che la coda dell’occhio potesse anticipare qualche parola, mi rivelasse troppo presto quello che volevo scoprire man mano, così come era stato progettato.
Eppure, non si tratta certo di un thriller – al massimo, potrebbe essere avvicinato al genere avventura.
Ma c’è suspense, attesa, mistero, come in uno dei miei film preferito tra i preferiti, The Passenger – Professione reporter.

Un bel primo incontro con Flavia Company, argentina trapiantata a Barcellona, di cui non avevo mai sentito parlare. Cento pagine che raccontano bene una storia emozionante, che comincia forte e finisce ancora più in là.
Si parla di naufragi, il punto di partenza e quello d’arrivo coincidono, è sempre l’esistenza umana che va alla deriva.

I picked up this novella almost at random in a bookstore, never having heard the title or the author, and liked the first page enough to buy it and start reading it on the spot. It was a quick read, a nautical tale in the tradition of Defoe and Conrad by an Argentine woman who moved to Barcelona and wrote it in Catalan. And it was excellent.
It begins with a mysterious doctor at a New York party who was rumored to be shipwrecked on a deserted island for five years. The bulk of the story is told by him through the woman he falls in love with and lives with for seven years. The epilogue following his death is by the woman, and puts a fascinating twist on everything that came before it.
The bulk of the novel is a castaway story as the man is trapped on a small deserted island with a pirate he thought he had killed. In almost the opposite of the civilization depicted in Robinson Crusoe, in this novella they divide up the island, each have territories the other is not allowed in, and rarely cooperate or trade. The tension mounts as he doctor becomes increasingly impatient to find out what is going on in the territory of the pirate.
Ultimately, it is not clear whether it should be read as a realistic story or as an allegory of two sides of a man struggling with himself. But it reads well either way.

The Island of Last Truth is the story, from alternating points of view, of Dr. Matthew Prendel, a physician who has been shipwrecked for years and, through some luck he does not describe in detail, returned to New York City. He is the only survivor from the pirate attack that left two of his close friends (who were also his crew) dead. He is stranded on an island with another one of the pirates, but escapes the only survivor. Only one man knows exactly what went on during those five years, and as Prendel begins to open up to Phoebe Westore what occurred, and it is not exactly what everyone has assumed. Westore starts recounting what she has been told, interspersed with Prendel's recounting of the events of those five years.
In an undeniably nautical theme, this short novel echoes Robinson Crusoe while adding a darker side to the shipwreck survival story.

This is a taut, gripping story about a contemporary pirate attack and shipwreck. This novel explores the intersection between what one will do to survive, and what one won't do in order to think of one's self as a moral person. The story also deals well with portraying the discrepancy between the person one thinks one is, and the person one actually is. Maddeningly compelling.

En un vol de 1h40, m'he passat la meitat llegint i l'altra meitat pensant en el que acabava de llegir. En sí, trobo que se li podria haver tret més suc a la història. A veure, has naufragat en una illa on hi ha serps verinoses, només tens per menjar el peix que pesquis i estàs cohabitant amb un pirata. Segur que s'hauria pogut explotar una mica més l'aventura i afegir una mica de suspens, però també entenc que no era el principal al llibre. No m'ha enganxat allò que diguis uau, i em sorprèn que el fet que el que menys m'ha impacientat ha estat saber com havia aconseguit sortir de l'illa, almenys, durant la major part del llibre.
Tot i això, m'han agradat molt algunes frases i reflexions que fa, com per exemple "les tragèdies que un s'imagina de lluny, quan s'acosten ja no són més que situacions adverses", o "li pregunta com ho sap, si perd o guanya, a la vida. Com ho sap, si tantes vegades que sembla que un perd en realitat està guanyant".
És la primera vegada que llegeixo a l'autora i la veritat és que m'ha agradat molt com escriu, de forma senzilla i clara, i amb un català molt maco. Sens dubte llegiré més d'ella.
També he de dir que m'ha molat el plot twist final i m'ha frustrat estar a mil metres d'altura sense internet i no poder ni comentar-lo amb ningú ni buscar opinions per internet.
Tremenda ressenya però és que m'ha sorprès gratament i tampoc tinc massa cosa més per fer aquí dalt i em sembla que començar un altre llibre ara mateix és no respectar el dol per haver acabat aquest quan encara no l'he acabat de pair jejejej

Espectacular història de Flàvia Company. Amb una escriptura impecable i directa l'autora ens endinsa en la història d'un naufragi identificant-nos amb el diàleg intern del protagonista només com ella sap fer.... Després, la relació entre els dos habitants d'una illa...el captiu i el captor...I un secret que no és desvetllat fins al final. Una novela curta, intensa i soprenent fins a l'última pàgina. De les que queden. 100% recomanable.

3.5 The tenses in the narration change, but throughout the writing is crisp and precise. A disappearance of five years, a reappearance and a story, pirates, stranded on a deserted island and a mystery. How did he survive? How did he escape? A taut psychological thriller, a secret and questions of morality that are all explored in this rather small but extremely interesting novel. ARC from publisher.

This is a great read! I read it while at a dance competition with loud music and screaming girls. It kept me captivated and I was on the island. There are some great thoughts about life such as how do you know if you are winning or losing. This is a quick read and I highly recommend it.

I like Europa editions a lot and picked up this book mainly for its looks. Very surprised by the story and the twist at the end. It is a recommended read for those fans of shipwreck stories.

El libro se vende con el subtítulo de "hay secretos con los que se puede vivir, pero con los que no se puede morir". La autora construye un relato de naufragio y supervivencia relativamente ágil a partir de esta premisa, en el que el motor de la motivación para seguir leyendo es llegar al punto álgido en el que se nos desvelará cuál es ese secreto tan tremendo con el que no se puede morir, aunque ese secreto se va vislumbrando desde bastante antes de que ocurra. Por otro lado el estilo de la narración va sufriendo algunos cambios que parecen incoherentes y más debidos al descuido de la autora que a un propósito consciente.
Si la historia hubiera quedado aquí (tras revelar el gran secreto) podría haber finalizado con cierta dignidad como un relato acerca de las relaciones de confianza entre personas en situaciones límite, como nos enfrentamos a la muerte, o como sobrevivir en un peñón del Atlántico durante cinco años en menos de 100 páginas. Pero entonces aparece un giro de tuerca final que desmonta toda la historia como si fuera un castillo de naipes, porque a partir de ese giro de tuerca, el resto de la historia no es (o no parece ser) nada más que una gran mentira.
Al menos el libro es corto, por lo que la decepción final no se hace esperar y se agradece no haber perdido más tiempo leyéndolo.

I suppose this is part of a genre I’ve never read, shipwreck stories. It's a slim elegant novella with a hidden heart - suspense followed by surprise. I can see it told by Hitchcock, down to the strange names. So, the plot? A man, on his death bed, recounts the story of his salvation and escape from an unoccupied Atlantic island. Which aspects, if any, of this story are true? It’s up to you. Rarely does a novel get better as it goes along, and this one saves its best for last.

March 17, 2022I went in having low expectations and would have not been surprised by the ending if I had remembered that you should read preface's and so I had no idea what was happening. Overall it was entertaining, albeit quite predictable, and the length of it made it an easy read. Although I am bit confused overall if everything actually had happened, since the story was narrated by his fake not-really wife.

Por intentar dar un final abierto, enredaron los sucesos del pasado y se convirtió en un sin fin de incoherencias. Sinceramente como libro de introspección tipo: el encuentro con uno mismo que reflejan dos personalidades distintas, cala la idea. Pero metieron a las malas un “todo ha sido una gran mentira”. Realmente cuando lees al detalle y unes el final con el inicio, nada concuerda. ¡Nada! No tienes cómo meter los datos del final con los que proporcionan al inicio de la historia.

Un llibre de segona mà agafat jutjat només per la portada, curt però intens, diuen.
He necessitat acabar-lo el mateix dia que l'he començat, no sabria dir ben bé perquè. No quedarà en els llibres d'història de la literatura però m'ha fet fer un saltet al llegir el final.
Bona lectura per a un dissabte sense molta cosa a fer :)

3,5. Me desconcierta un poco el estilo de la narración, que evoca a una historia decimonónica pero sucede en el s. XXI. No obstante, me ha gustado tanto la narración como la historia del doctor Prendel y su naufragio.

Aquest llibre ha acabat prou salat pobre… i és que se n’ha anat fins a la Font d’en Carròs!!! L’he llegit pràcticament d’una tirada, l’he trobat molt entretingut i és un bon llibre de platja. Molt recomanable :)
