This book was not for me.This is a book for those who study island and marine biology. But these are not the subjects I studied.Hence,it took a long time to complete. The only part which is great is the photography. Its just amazing.Otherwise, the text is only for biologists.
One man's travelogue about the Caribbean might seem like an alright blog post, but Peter Wood's experience in journalism and science makes this more like an enticing National Geographic. There's no overarching scientific point to be made, just a series of quests to fulfill his curiosity. In ~165 pages he camps out on beaches, delves into the geological and colonial history, forges paths through dense, rain-soaked jungles, climbs and re-confirms the highest point in the Antilles, and seeks out some of the avian and aquatic life that makes these islands unique. Granted, its 1975 publishing date will make some of it out of date, but I will probably look into the other books in the series at the used book store. It's just fun to read and well written, with enough details to make you want to book a flight to see it all for yourself.
I spent 15 minutes just to observed the content of the book. Suddenly, my landlord lend the book to me this afternoon, after we had a regular chit chat. It is actually a photo book which has varied pictures from all over Caribbean. Ranged from Dominican Republic, Haiti, and many more. The author wrote in Germany, so that I don't really know the story, though. But, since it is a photo book, I can enjoyed the mesmerized pictures over the words. Wild forest, a group of flamingos, fishes in the ocean, and many more. Such a nice break from a stacking words over the regular books that I have read during these months.
This book has been in my home library because I once had a subscription to the Time-Life American Wilderness series. I always enjoyed the pictures; but only recently have I begun to enjoy the text too. This is great armchair travel material for I can imagine being on the same hikes and diving trips. I recommend it for all readers.
