Mara Riley is out to prove she can make it on her own and to disprove her mother's contention that the only way to security -- and therefore happiness -- is to marry a successful doctor or lawyer. But with her job as an activity director at a North Carolina mountain resort on shaky ground and her penchant for choosing all the wrong men, Mara's not scoring high in the pursuit of either security or happiness. Alex Price is on the rebound fronm a broken engagement. Who would have guessed his social-climbing finacée would drop him, a successful lawyer with his own practice -- okay, a successful practice with his two overberaing older brothers -- for a back-to-nature forest ranger? When these childhood adversaries meet on the "honeymoon" cruise Alex is now taking alone, they make a pact to help each other ward off unwanted attention from fellow shipmates -- a pact that sends them sailing into uncharted waters.
Mara’s Move is by Jean C. Gordon. It is a cute novel about being in love and accepting the compromises that have to be made. It is well-written and very personable. The characters are realistic as is the plot. The part aboard the cruise ship is well-done and you can picture yourself on the ship. Mara Riley has moved away from her hometown to make her way in the world and even to show her Mother that marrying a doctor or lawyer is not the only way to security. Mara doesn’t need a man to provide for her. In fact, the way she feels right now, she doesn’t need a man for anything. Her choices in men so far haven’t been very good. At least she has a job she likes, or does she? Mara is moved to Public Relations when the woman she was filling in for returned from maternity leave. The good part about the new job is she gets to travel. Her first job is aboard a cruise ship. Alex Price is recovering from a broken engagement. He has to get away from his well-meaning friends so decides to go on the honeymoon cruise which he was supposed to enjoy with Laura. Since it was paid for, he decided to use it to get away. He had no idea that he would be sharing so much time with Mara Riley, his little sister’s best friend. Mara had a crush on him when she was in her teens and he had no intention of encouraging any more than friendship. Their meeting on the cruise brought back memories of their childhood and brought them together as friends. However, their feelings go further than that. However, he was in New York and she was in North Carolina. Will a long distance relationship work?
Not bad. Mara moved from NY to NC for a job, and to prove to her mother that she could take care of herself, without a man’s help. She gets sent on a company cruise, to secretly rate the employees and everything else. Alex, her best friend’s brother, is on the same ship, getting away from his family and friends after his fiancée dumped him. They decide to act like a couple to ward off others, and realize they do like each other. But long distance logistics stymie them, since neither one will budge. Can they figure it out?
This story is just the way I like my romances... Hot guy, sensual kisses, clean romance, easy, light plot, and a sweet escape. I really enjoyed it. Chick lit. Perfect for me. I recommend it for readers who enjoy this kind of literature. A fun, light read.
