Rate this book

This book was okay. Turning Bible stories into cutesy tales isn't my preference. Also, I prefer a cleaner type of illustration. There isn't anything wrong with this book, I just wish it had been done in a classier way

One of the several pleasures of reading this book (translated, by the wonderful Ilana Kurshan, from the original that appeared back in 1994) is thinking back to how I was introduced to these stories as a child through two other books. This one is beautifully illustrated with modern language (Sarah worries about Abraham's sunburn, for instance). And of course, it's never too early for children to learn the name of Israeli author Meir Shalev.

6 stories and beautiful illustrations fill the pages of this book. The Tree of Knowledge, Noah's Ark, The Tower of Babel, Abraham and Sarah, Joseph and his Brothers, and Moses in the River are all retold in a short story. The tales are rewritten in a way to engage young readers in conversation about each story. The bright colors used throughout enhance the written stories.

This lovely book is an English translation from the 1993 original Hebrew edition. Israeli children's author Meir Shalev retold these classic bible stories with wit and whimsey. The stories were illustrated by the famous artist Emanuele Luzzati whose bright colorful paintings enchant the eye. Translator Ilana Kurshan has retold these tales in simple language appropriate for youngsters. This anthology is a true treasure for families and libraries wishing to add to their bible story collections
