Philip Wilkinson (born 1955) is the author of non-fiction books for children and adults. He was educated at Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He worked as an editor prior to becoming an author.

He specializes in works on history, the arts, religion, and architecture and has written over forty titles.

Very interesting summary of architectonic styles and terms, with renowned names in each category. I miss the lack of pictures and more detailed explanations though. Architecture is similar to art, and explanations of the characteristics are not enough. Therefore, it is up to the reader to make a wider research in order to get a deeper visual understanding.

relevant and rather helpful brief excursion into the history of architecture.
the style though is sometimes quite tedious and uninventive. in this sense Future and Math are more colorful, to my taste. but nonetheless i can recommend this books as a nice reference compendium for further reading and seeing.

В «50 идеях архитектуры» у Филиппа Уилкинсона получился отлично структурированный обзор архитектурных идей западной культуры со времен Древней Греции до наших дней. Текстовая часть книги выполнена на пять баллов: автор отлично наводит фокус на ключевые исторические точки, акцентирует внимание на первоисточниках, предпосылках и технологических открытиях. Конечно, ничто из это не станет открытием для сколь-нибудь увлеченного темой читателя, но мне, как «заскочившему на одну книгу» архитектурному профану, было приятно увидеть в качестве обзорной экскурсии чуть больше, чем нагромождение исторических фактов и неизвестных доселе терминов.


А вот все, что не касается текстовой части — пиши пропало. Эта книжная серия загоняет себя в формат «1 идея = 2 разворота + 1 иллюстрация» и существует в нем максимально неуютно, это: 1) прыгающая верстка, которая постоянно дергает читательское внимание врезками бесполезных цитат; 2) постоянный и неоправданный переход с одной колонки на две и обратно; 3) какие-то неожиданные текстовые блоки, когда в главе про ад-деко внезапно появляется врезка про совершенно другой архитектурный стиль «стримлайн»; — и все это сопровождается постоянно меняющимися гарнитурами разных размеров и начертаний. Словом, если существует верстка, способная вызвать эпилептический приступ, то это именно она.

Но хуже всего в этой книге тот самый бюджет в одну иллюстрацию на одну главу — а вернее то, как им распоряжается редактор. Архитектура это тот самый случай, когда одна картина дороже тысячи слов: автор сколько угодно может описывать рустованный камень, скругление окон, классические порталы, пилястры, консоли, картуши — но даже если закрыть глаза на то, что я не знаю половины этих слов — все эти абзацы характеристик стиля боз-ар никогда не встанут рядом с одной единственной фотографией парижской Гранд-опера. И тем абсурднее видеть что свой лимит в одну фотографию редактор тратит на какую-нибудь фотографию Школы изящных искусств, в которой, да, зародился этот самый боз-ар, но сама-то школа построена в стиле неоренессанса — так уж ли важно редактору показать именно ее?

Так, например, в главе про ренессанс единственная иллюстрация это «Витрувианский человек» да Винчи, в главе про движение голландских архитекторов «Де Стиль» — «Красно-синий стул», в главе про конструктивизм — «Башня Татлина», в главе про ар-деко — какое-то здание в стиле «стримлайн», в главе про неорационализм — дизайнерские заварник и чайник. Иными словами, книга постоянно рассказывает об одном, а показывает — совершенно другое. И я по прочтении даже затрудняюсь сказать на что в процессе изучения «50 идей архитектуры» было потрачено больше времени: на саму книгу или же на попытки выгуглить все упомянутые в ней здания и памятники архитектуры — но в любом случае этот процесс было бы сложно назвать приятным чтением.

В итоге, отличный текст испорчен откровенно равнодушной редактурой материала. При всем уважении к проделанной Филиппом Уилкинсоном работе мне сложно рекомендовать эту книгу кому-нибудь, кто ценит свое время.

Перша прочитана книга англійською мовою. І це саме та книга, яка потрібна архітектору початківцю. По-перше, вона робить змістовний екскурс у світ архітектури та дає загальні орієнтири, на які можна спиратися в подальшому вивченні архітектури. По-друге, англійська мова дійсно не складна. По-третє, вона гарно структурована, що дає змогу не заплутатися, що дуже важливо початківцю. Щодо змісту, то варто сприймати цей текст як довідковий. Тут не зустрінеш, поглядів автора чи його суб’єктивне сприйняття. Проте зустрінеш дати, приклади, влучний опис стилю та контекст в якому він зародився. У книзі можна добре побачити як перетікали одні стилі в інші, як спротив усталеним нормам породжував новий стиль. Найцікавіше, що нові стилі зароджувалися всупереч сучасним частіше ніж походили від контексту. Архітектори завжди хотіли кинути виклик усталеним суспільним поглядам. Отже, книга варта уваги точно, але якщо ви початківець у вивченні нових стилів та течій в архітектурі.

Ну… Бестолковая книга. Считаю эту серию достаточно годной для насыщения поверхностной эрудиции, но в случае с “Архитектурой” у них плохо получилось.

Во-первых, бедно на иллюстрации. Ёлки, это ж домики. Чтобы в голове какой-то стиль или элемент стиля совместился с домиком, должны быть фотографии или графика. А их почти нет. То, что есть, не помогает.

Во-вторых, уже на 10-м стиле, весьма кратко описанном, перестал мочь запоминать, пусть даже растягивал чтение на несколько дней. Чёт вот совсем галопом по Европам. Зачем нужен такой “справочник”? Вместо того, чтобы повествовать об очередном необрутакокоизме, лучше бы рассказали о материалах, например.

В-третьих, статьи между собою слабо связаны. Просто перечисление по временной шкале без особой системы. Тоже затрудняет чтение.

Резюмирую: не надо читать. Полистать стоит, быть может, а вот читать не надо.

There are not enough illustrations for all the buildings and styles. As I am a newbie to architecture I can not say if that is a good introduction. For me it was plenty to read about and just enough scratching the surface. Here is a set of pictures and articles I collected while reading it:

Btw, the book text says "From the Pyramids of Giza ..." - it does not start at that time - this is not true. It begins with some Roman and Greek classical styles.

This is a fine introduction to architecture. Do you "really need to know" about the things in this book?

No.

There will never be a point in your life where you will live or die based on your knowledge of de stijl, dymaxion design, Bauhaus, etc.

Even curious people won't care about the majority of the content in this book.

That said, it's well-written for what it is. The topics are also well chosen.

Maybe I'd include something about regulation, urban design, accessibility, and CAD. Those are all things that impact architecture in the real world.

كتاب رائع ومناسب جداً كبداية للراغبين في التعمق في هذا المجال , فهو يبني أساس جيد في فهم تاريخ العمارة وتطورها عبر العصور والقرون ويحمس لقراءة المزيد والمزيد خاصة في الطرز والأساليب التي تروق للقارئ , فأحد الطرز التي كانت تروق لي وزاد حماسي لها هو طراز العمارة التفكيكية والذي تميزت فيه المعمارية العظيمة زها حديد .

لم يعجبني في الكتاب أنه مطبوع بالأبيض والأسود فالصور الموجودة فيه على قلتها للأسف كانت غير واضحة المعالم لا يستفيد منها القارئ في شيء مضطرة إياه للبحث في جوجل عن مثيلاته .

Excellent introduction to key architectural ideas. Each section is only a few pages long but packs great deal in. More pictures (and colour ones) would have been great but part of the charm of this book is its succinctness so that’s not a major criticism.

Well put-together little book (around 200 pages) from the Quercus series, which is ideal for getting an overview of the various different movements in Western architecture, in order to separate your Brutalism from your Functionalism, Metabolist architecture from Postmodernism. And, perhaps more importantly, for placing them in time, which means that many buildings from the 1960s and 1970s can make a whole lot more sense to you.
Unless you already knew all that and those buildings already made perfect sense, in which case you most likely don't need an overview book like this.

вполне полезная обзорная экскурсия по мировой (и, естественно, преимущественно западной) архитектуре, при которой фамилии слипаются с течениями, а здания со стилями. особенно утешительно это было читать на фоне того, как тупые архитекторы, планировщики и градостроители систематически убивают мой родной город (Владивосток). когда убеждаешься, что эти скоты умудряются нарушать все и всяческие писаные и неписаные правила, хочется выделить им совершенно отдельный круг ада.
