Nothing exciting happens in Tawny Taylor's life, unless you count giving the cat a flea dip--a cat can make some fascinating sounds when immersed chin-deep in insecticide--or chasing after a houseful of upchucking kids during flu season. She doesn't travel the world or employ a staff of personal servants. She's not even built like a runway model. She's just your run-of-the-mill, pleasantly plump Detroit suburban mom and wife.
There were too many scenes “told” and not properly built up or “shown.” – just things thrown in.
REVIEWER’S OPINION: This is not a well done story. Too many characters introduced but not fleshed out. There were two bad guys. What was going on with them was unclear. On hindsight, I’m wondering if they were the same person. I don’t know. Some things about Lei were vague and unfinished. Why was she acting depressed? Did she know Bob from before? How did she get to his location? Apparently Lei had seen Rin at a dungeon party and could have tried to get Rin’s attention. Why didn’t she? Rin had been searching for her for a long time. At the end, one character all of a sudden has a paranormal ability to save the day. This was thrown in. There was nothing paranormal about anyone throughout the story (other than the existence of a magic object).
Oh, and we have typical heroine stupidity. Drako tells Rin to stay in the car where she will be safe. But as soon as she sees that there are bad guys with guns shooting at good guys. She decides she must help. So she runs into the middle of it, with no weapon whatsoever. Of course a bad guy grabs her and drives away with her.
As far as romance goes, it wasn’t the best formula. After marriage Drako continues going to his club to play with submissives, which turns him on. Then he goes home to have quickie sex with his wife, and then he leaves her to sleep in his own room. I suppose the story is that he changes his mind later. But it wasn’t good for me.
I see this story as something to go with the Dom scenes. It may be ok for those wanting to read about Dom/sub sex. But I prefer having a good story to go with the erotic stuff. The sex scenes include bondage, public displays, sex toys, and rear door activity. It’s explicit.
STORY BRIEF: Drako and his two brothers must guard The Secret, power in a canister. Their family has guarded this for hundreds or thousands of years. Their father recently died. Just before he died he said all three of them must marry to have offspring to carry on the mission. The three guys are Doms and spend lots of time at dungeon clubs binding up and causing pain to submissives. Drako meets Rin and decides to marry her. He tells her he will have sex with her, but he needs to continue playing with other submissives at the clubs. She agrees because she needs $50,000 to buy her sister’s freedom. Her sister was sold into sex slavery by the mother. So they marry. Meanwhile a bad guy knows about The Secret and plans to get it.
DATA: Story length: 268 pages. Swearing language: strong. Sexual language: strong/erotic. Number of sex scenes: 9. Estimated number of sex scene pages: 50. Setting: current day Detroit, Michigan, and Toledo, Ohio. Copyright: 2011. Genre: erotic paranormal romance.
I couldn't finish this book. When BDSM is used without understanding, it shows. Also the characters become wooden and indecisive halfway through the story. I'm going to find something else.
I'd written a very long, very scathing, review of this book and then I hit one of my bookmark buttons by accident. Bye bye, review. I kinda want to cry now. Bad enough I had to suffer through this book and then I lose my five+ paragraphs on top of it? Heartbreaking.
Here are the highlights:
1. The back blurb is completely misleading. This is not a paranormal. Rin and Drakos do not know each other. Drakos does dom other subs, but he doesn't have intercourse with anyone but Rin. Rin has no big secret. She marries him to rescue her sister, which she pretty much tells him right away.
2. Taylor misrepresents post-traumatic stress disorder. I have PTSD and the symptoms she eventually gives Lei, Rin's sister, are characteristic of depression. Also, Lei is astonishingly psychologically and physically healthy, considering she's been held in sexual captivity for over a year.
3. There are a bajillion plot holes and things that are never explained. I tried to see if there was an ebook prequel of this series, but Taylor's website is out of date and poorly organized. So anytime you ask 'why,' expect to be disappointed.
4. The plot doesn't flow smoothly. There are odd time jumps. The worst one happens towards the end of the book. On page 253, the end of Chapter 21, some characters are in mortal danger. They may not survive. Page 254 begins Chapter 22 and it opens with a sex scene. We don't find out the fate of the characters until page 258 and then we also find out it's 'months later.'
What kills me about all of this is that I think the bones of a good book were there. If Taylor had opened with a prologue, shortened Lei's captivity & read the DSM-IV, and the plot kinks were fixed, this would have been a decent book. I would say the sex scenes were fairly hot, but at that point, I couldn't stop WTF-ing.
So there you go. It all boils down to that: Darkest Fire is an epic WTF book. I won't read the other books in the series when they come out, but I'm not saying I wouldn't read other books by the author. I would just do so with extreme caution and maybe with a spotter.
Drako Alexandre is more than the handsome billionaire playboy he appears to be. He leads his generation of Black Gryffons, protectors of humanity. Although Drako has no desire to be tied down - except at the private bondage club he visits - he must take a wife to give him a son to lead the Black Gryffons in the future. He knows just the woman - Rin Mitchell, a delicate beauty who frees his intense primal hunger. The agreement they make will allow him to continue to enjoy the domination, forbidden pleasures and multiple lovers he so desires. But Drako's chosen is hiding something. Will her secret destroy them? If not, the explosive passion she ignites within him just might.
Tawny Taylor’s Darkest Fire had me from the first page. This book has heated passion and a riveting plot. Drako is kind of jaded. He thinks he can get his own way with money, but when he makes a business-like arrangement to marry Rin he gets much more than he ever bargained for. She is not someone he can control; he has to prove himself to her, and boy does he EVER prove himself. Rin is a independent woman who knows who she is and what she wants. I liked her strong attitude, but she also is willing to be dominated. Yet, if you want her to submit, you have to earn it. I like that she wasn’t one to just let someone walk all over her. Her blend of strength and vulnerability makes Rin a perfect heroine, one that I easily connect with. I could feel her pain and wanted her to have a happy ending.
Personally, I think all of Ms. Taylor’s works are must reads, but she takes her trademark heart and soul to new levels in Darkest Fire, giving it that little something that pushes it over the top to make it one heck of a read and one for my keeper shelf.
Rin and Drako are tied to their families' tradition. In Drako's case is guarding a powerful and secret object. As the leader of his generation of Black Gryffons, he is honor bound to produce sons who would follow the custodians' path, because of this, he must marry as soon as possible. In Rin's family, the tradition is the brutal practice of selling daughters to the sex trade. Trying to escape such fate, Rin studied and worked hard. However, her mother sold her younger sister, forcing Rin to work at a dubious massage place to gather the money she needs to pay for her sister's freedom.
When Drako meets Rin, he knows he seen her before, the next day he recalls where she serves up, and given her line of work, he assumes she would be happy to accept his proposition. The ultimatum from the white slaver, who has her sister, comes the same day Drako proposes a marriage of convenience. He needs a wife to birth his children, but he prefers someone who also would accept his BDSM lifestyle. Rin would get the money to free her sister and a lavish living. She doesn't have a choice, besides, her future husband is sexiness incarnate.
The arranged marriage works out perfectly for Rin. For the first time in her life, she has everything material and the freedom to enjoy it. She is helping her sister to recover and both of them start to live a normal life. Even so, there are dark clouds in her paradise. Her husband is resolved to never love her. Love is a liability for the Black Gryffons. He learned that first hand with his parent's happy marriage. Unknown to Rin, there is the serious threat of the Chimera and their dark conspiracy. The group wants to seize the Secret the Black Gryffons protect and would stop at nothing to achieve their goal.
Drako is part of a new kind of alpha hero, a more likeable one. I enjoyed when the author shared through him the insights of a Dom's mind and feelings. He is dominant in all the sense of the word, but he is a caring human being, who is tender and understanding with Rin. He doesn't questions her past or her choices, but supports her and trusts her. Rin is curious to learn more about her mysterious husband's BDSM world. A world he insists to keep away from her. Therefore, Rin has to seduce her way into his dungeon. Among rituals of dominance and submission Drako would have his own boundaries strained and tested by his wife's sensual body and unbroken spirit.
Darkest Fire is told from the point of views of Drako (I love male POV) Rin and the villain. I would have liked to learn more about Drako's brothers and Rin's sister. Sadly, the author did not spend time with any of them beyond their obvious supporting roles. I was a little disappointed to discover very little paranormal elements in this book. It could have been a great book series if the author would have written more fantasy into the plot. Instead, we got an erotic thriller with BDSM elements.
Tawny Taylor did a great rendering of the darker side of sex through the BDSM theme exposed in Darkest Fire. The book is fast pace and I recommend it if you like D/s within your erotic romance. You will be captivated.
At first, I was looking forward to reading this book; I saw it at an old bookstore and thought it looked tempting and appetizing. Turns out, reading it made me want to bang holes in my wall after I threw up. Characters are wooden, location is confusing, what the fuck was the brothers' precious "secret"? At best, the sex scenes were plain vanilla. I normally like guys who play hard to get, but Drako pissed me off. In truth, I couldn't even finish the book. I kept waiting for something to happen, and my hopes would be smashed. Taylor really needs to do more research on BDSM. With Lei, the idea of PTSD in this book was all wrong. Truthfully, her symptoms reminded me of depression with a touch of possible hoarding. Worst erotic book I've read since "Beautiful Bastard". If you value your brain and hate boredom. keep this book out of sight. I threw it against the wall when I returned to my room!

**THIS TITLE INTENDED FOR ADULTS 18 AND OVER**
My Thoughts: This was a much more engaging read than I was expecting. The storyline was interesting with Drako being a Black Gryffon who is in charge of keeping “the Secret”, while there is an equally bad group of people who are hell bent on revealing “the Secret”. Meanwhile Drako, as leader, is expected to marry and produce the next line of Black Gryffons…hence his proposal to Rin.
The sensual scenes were hot and there was some mild BDSM as well as some interesting reasoning for Drako and Rin to be involved in that scene. I will be checking out the rest of this series for a number of reasons…I want to get to know Drako’s brothers as well as finding out more about “the Secret”.
Trust is the most integral and fragile component in Rin and Drako’s relationship throughout the pages of this book. That same trust is also the very foundation of the dominant/submissive lifestyle, and for me it is hard to see Rin impose upon those boundaries. The D/s aspect of this story is done mildly, but it adds just one more layer to a book already rife with longing, mystery, and the need to learn more will keep you coming back. More Black Gryffon stories are yet to come, but the results, I am very sure, will be well worth the wait.
Intriguing story line that I would have enjoyed learning about. The family of Drako has the job of protecting the "Secret" from discovery by the "Chimera" organization, or it will harm all of mankind. Not enough of an explanation to really help the reader understand this. Drako and his brothers must marry to have sons to carry on the job, but he feels he cannot love the woman he choses, to protect those he is charged to keep safe. Never really explains why this is true, and of course, they fall in love. This was a good story that could have been great if a writer like JR Ward had put it together. Sigh.
I liked the story:) I just felt it could have been alot more...I wanted more backstory on the brothers the sister and The Secret...I had too many questions...especially with how it ended..it was left open for a sequel, but I was not intrigued enough with any other characters to scream for the next book...That said I did love the sex scenes!..it got very hot at the club:)...Im sure Ill read the next one if there is one!
There was so much wrong with this book that it couldn't outweigh the few positive points, which was unfortunate because it the plot had potential. The underlying fantasy plot, while familiar, was not bad if poorly executed. The heroine was terrible, weak and unintelligent her sister was worse. I barely skimmed through the last half of the book, pretty much just to complete it and have no interest in reading anything else in the series.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a little different and I wished that more time had been given to the Secret and the sisters of the 3 main characters but the story did not suffer. This book about Drako, the eldest of 3 bothers. Hopefully, there will be books for the other two brothers. It is hot and sexy with lots of emotional pull between the hero and the heroine.
This was erotic romance, in comparison to other books I've read in this genre I had a hard time connecting to the story. The characters were ok but depth was missing making things ver 2D. I would read more from this author and give it another chance. Once again I didn't dislike it, unfortunately it didn't rock my boat. T
eh... its nothing special... lots of plotholes... very vague... problems at the end with continuity. the guy's brother's eyes "went blank and cold" because that's what dead peoples eyes do... and then he went to the hospital and is "all better" after a few months rehab or emergency surgery or whatever...
unless everything is explained more in the next book im really not feeling this...
This is more 3.5 stars than 4, but it was an enjoyable book with interesting characters. It is obvious that there will be more in the series based on the vague ending, but it rounded off nicely enough. I will say that it took me a few chapters to become 'involved' but I'm glad that I stuck with it.
I really dont know what to make of this book it was okay but I felt like I'm left with wanting more. I have a so many question at the end of this book that I felt should of be answered unless she's coming out with another book?
This had the potential to be a great story but it was too rushed. The author skipped too many important passages and for others didn't provided enough info.I'm going give it three stars and hope the next book is better.
The story was kind of weak and disjointed. It is irritating when characters act stupidly. I enjoyed it until about 2/3 of the way through then the story lost cohesion. The action/suspense portion of the story was weak.
Was expecting it to be better especially with the warning label "This is a REALLY HOT book. (sexually explicit)Still liked it especially the club scenes.
I couldn't actually put this book down. Compared to the first book I read by Ms. Tawny Taylor, this one so far has been the best & it's only book 1 in a second series by her that I've read.
If you know anything about polyamory or BDSM you’re probably going to deeply dislike this book. There’s also some out of pocket nonsense at the end that I truly despise. It’s not even a particularly smutty book to make up for the lack of interesting plot.
