Henry's mum and dad think his new friend Gary is bad news. But Dad's got worse problems at work. If he doesn't win the charity go-kart race, he might lose his job! There's trouble ahead, but nobody reckons on a mystery boy racer who turns up at the track.
Although a fairly easy book for young beginning readers (aged 7-10), at points the story can be quite dry and lack character depth/ description, especially in the younger characters- Henry (aged 8/9). The story has a charming ending, with some lessons learnt but the morals of the story aren’t threaded through and therefore teaching key messages or clear ideas isn’t as easy to distinguish for younger readers.
To hook interests, there needs to be more description and there should be more character diversity, as the characters are predominately male.
Definitely a book for boys, and for girls who loves racing karts. Whybrow follows the form of young kids' fiction, i.e., walk through challenges with friends' support, but overcome them yourself with courage. At last , a happy ending follows.
