After years of drifting, fifty-year-old Pete Ryman has settled down with his potbellied pig, Pearl, in the small town of Sleeping Grass--a place he never expected to see again. It's not the life he dreamed of, but there aren't many prospects for a high school dropout like him.
Elderly widow Wilma Jacobsen carries a burden of guilt over her part in events that led to Pete leaving Sleeping Grass decades ago. Now that he's back, she's been praying for the chance to make things right, but she never expected God's answer to leave her flat on her face--literally--and up to her ears in meddling.
When the younger sister Pete was separated from as a child shows up in Sleeping Grass with her eleven-year-old son, Pete is forced to face a past he buried long ago, and Wilma discovers her long-awaited chance at redemption may come at a higher cost than she's willing to pay.
Set in northern Montana along the rugged and remote Hi-Line, Katie Powner's latest interweaves poignancy and humor to present a story of friendship, forgiveness, and moving forward.

She could see it now. Oh, how much easier it was to look back using the lens of time and see the coarse grains of sand would someday be pearls.
Spend some time under the Big Skies of Montana in the town of Sleeping Grass. You will not want to leave. Pete picks up your garbage with his trusty sidekick Pearl (a feisty pig), Windy Ray (Raymond) and his little dog Apisi will greet you warmly and share remembering rocks, Wilma will meddle in your life in the best of ways, and Lily will remind you that it is okay to ask for help. Dani and her son Braedon will also steal your heart as they get used to the new and improved brother/uncle Pete. These people have real problems and they aren't all neatly tied up by the end of the book, but they are all works in progress. Their Creator reminds them they are saved by the Son and the Spirit sends fresh encouragement on the wind. Finally, Pearl the pig is an absolute star. She rides shotgun with Pete and will let you know in aromatic ways if you are threatening her boundaries. 🐖
Thank you to Bethany House and NetGalley for a DRC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I believe I've read everything Katie Powner has written so far, and her books always feature characters who feel like they could be real people. The characters in The Wind Blows in Sleeping Grass were no exception. Pete and Wilma were both sympathetic main characters, and I enjoyed Dani, Braedon, and Lily as side characters. Pearl was hilarious, and I loved her antics.
This novel was definitely more character-driven and moved along at a slow but entertaining pace. It still featured moments of conflict though. Katie Powner's writing style worked well for The Wind Blows in Sleeping Grass, but sometimes the style put a bit of distance between me as the reader and the characters. I appreciated that Katie Powner kept both the language and the hint of romance clean. I'm looking forward to reading what she writes next!
As a side note, I thought that the cover fit this book perfectly. It's simple but beautiful.
Overall, The Wind Blows in Sleeping Grass was an entertaining read that I'd recommend to those who enjoy Christian fiction and contemporary novels.

Oh, Katie Powner just keeps getting better and better, which is saying something because I've loved her all along. This novel reads like something Kent Haruff might write. It's a story about salt of the earth people; Powner's specialty.
“Everything God makes has value, whether we choose to see it or not.”
The Wind Blows in Sleeping Grass is regrettably my first read by Katie Powner but it will absolutely not be my last. I was immediately captivated by the author’s smooth writing voice, the almost tangible setting, and the array of incredibly compelling characters – the ones with two legs and the ones with four (or three, as the case may be). But most of all, what drew me to this story – and what continues to keep me thinking about it – are its many poetic paradoxes.
Pete Ryman is a contradictory blend of rough-around-the-edges and the-soul-of-a-creative, and it’s a far more endearing mix than I anticipated. Despite his tragic & violent past and because of his tender care for the ragtag group of friends and family he’s gathered since returning to Sleeping Grass, Pete is the kind of person I’d want in my corner. I just wanted to reach in through the pages and give him a big hug, on several different occasions, and the same is true for the other eclectic characters that make up his inner circle. Pearl, his loyal potbellied pig with a fondness for getting into mischief. Windy Ray, his oxygen-tank-carting, tiny-3-legged-dog-owning, rock-collecting best friend. Miss Wilma, an octogenarian on his garbage collection route who’s been keeping her share of secrets. Lily, the timid & enchanting woman on his route with a bully of a boyfriend. Dani and Braeden, Pete’s sister and 11-year-old nephew who unexpectedly invade his life and his heart. In his own quiet way, he rescues each one of them in some form or fashion and they – in turn – rescue him.
This rescue from both sides isn’t neat and tidy, though. On the contrary, there’s a metaphor to be found between his chosen occupation and the situations he encounters. The beauty of Pete’s story is in this messiness, that same Divine paradox that we see on the pages of Scripture and in our own lives if we’re being honest. The Wind Blows in Sleeping Grass beautifully illustrates this poetry of grace, with the layered characters you’ll come to love and the events that bring them all together. And therein lies the final beautifully poignant paradox that has prevented this story from leaving my thoughts since I closed the last page… because sometimes what heals us also breaks us apart.
Bottom Line: The Wind Blows in Sleeping Grass by Katie Powner is the kind of book to sink into, to peel apart layer by layer until you’ve not only uncovered the obvious treasures but the hidden nuggets to ponder as well. This character-driven novel wrestles with some heavy issues without being a heavy story, soothing all the heart-bruises with a little humor and a lot of affection. It’s about real faith, real doubt, real joy, real sorrow, real regret… and real healing. The author’s impeccable skills as a storyteller are evident from the first page to the last, and I expect this book to linger with me for quite some time.

A delightful blend of serious and whimsical. This gifted storyteller weaves a story of important issues and everyday life along with characters of steadfast faith and those searching for spiritual answers. Ms. Powner shows that the wind blows on all no matter what their station or circumstances. I went through many emotions from laughing at the antics of Pearl the pet pig to tears for the wrongs done to Lily, Wilma and Dani. I am glad that the story did not tie everything up in a big red bow. That is not how life is in reality. Yet people found resolution and peace. Some found their faith strengthened and some took one step closer to God. My favorite character was Windy Ray, an old Indian man with a three legged dog. His voice in my head as I read was of Chief Dan George, an actor who was in Little Big Man and The Outlaw Josie Wales. He spoke of the Creator as if he knew Him and His Son personally. “Windy Ray told Pete that the only thing a person can find that will make them stop searching is peace with the Creator. When you have that, it is enough. But without it, nothing is ever enough.” The book dealt with facing shortcomings, overcoming problems, making and relying on friends and forgiving others. It truly is a gem. * A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Bethany House through Interviews and Reviews. I was not required to post a favorable review. All opinions are my own.*
I loved everything about this book, from the wonderful cast of characters to the heartwarming theme that everyone is valued by the Creator. Katie Power has penned a story that centers around an eclectic cast of characters, hard on their luck, struggling to find hope. Skillfully switching points-of-view between Pete, a fifty year old man, who has returned to the town where his troubles began and Wilma, an eighty something year old woman, who has been burdened by decisions made in the past. I absolutely loved Pete's poet heart and his potbellied pig, Pearl.
Powner expertly infuses humor in a story that has depth, not afraid to focus on the consequences of poor choices, but giving hope that one can change. Delightful story of the power of hope and second chances.
A favorite quote" Everything God makes has value, whether we choose to see it or not."

I loved this book! The entire time I could feel that tension of "I have to keep reading" up against "but I don't want it to end." The characters were so well drawn, you felt like you could sit down for a cup of coffee with them. Their struggles realistic (who hasn't made mistakes they regret, and when given the chance to fix it still not do it quite right?). The friendship between Pete and Ray was so endearing, and their pets (a pot-bellied pig!!! adore) added such a sweet underscore to their scenes. Every single character was flawed, but so easy to root for. I highly recommend this book, and Katie Powner stays on my list of "must read" authors.

Do you enjoy reading novels with unique characters? The Wind Blows in Sleeping Grass by Katie Powner has several unique characters.
Pete Ryman and his pot-bellied pig, Pearl, live in the small Montana town of Sleeping Grass. Pete struggled through the foster care system when he was growing up and is a high school drop-out. Currently, he is working as a garbage pick-up man. Pete has mellowed a lot and has a few friends in town--Wilma, Windy Ray and Lily. His sister, Dani, also comes back to town with her son, Braedon, and moves in with Pete.
Katie Powner is one of my favorite authors. I enjoy her books because they have unique characters. This book is a character-driven novel so I don't think it moved real fast. However, each of the characters were fascinating in their own way. Powner does a great job of character description. The reader does want to know how things will turn out for all of the characters as they get to know them and their problems. They nearly all have various struggles--like most people in life. There is also an element of faith that flows through the book along with a theme of redemption. I enjoyed most of the characters. I maybe wish for a different ending but all in all, it was enjoyable. If you are looking for a different contemporary read, I encourage you to pick up The Wind Blows in Sleeping Grass.

I love General Fiction novels and Katie Powner writes them so well. She expertly blends a mix of heart and humor into an engaging story line.
Main character Pete has had a difficult life with his mother leaving him and his sister at a young age. He used his fists to fight battles which has led to a transient life as an adult. After returning to Sleeping Grass, Montana, his life has settled into a comfortable one. Pete drives a garbage truck with his faithful pig Pearl in the passenger seat. And then God brings a few different wounded souls into his life.
This tale is a beautiful one of friendship, love, loss and moving on.
My gratitude to publisher Bethany House for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
In The Wind Blows in Sleeping Grass, an unlikely group of friends forms in small-town Montana as they deal with their pasts, presents and futures. I loved seeing how they navigated different things and stood up for each other in the midst of life’s messiness, finding hope along the way.
While I wish I got more of a “what happens next” in the ending, at the same time it ended in a way that fits the book and had the characters pointed towards the future. This was really, really good!
📖 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁: In the town of Sleeping Grass, Montana, we meet Pete and Pearl -- a soft-spoken garbage man and his rescued potbellied pig, respectively. Pete is back in Sleeping Grass after being gone for years. Though he's not one for laying down roots, the people of Sleeping Grass may just give him a reason to stick around.
💭 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: This is a charming, cozy, wholesome contemporary fiction novel with a subtle romance subplot. It is a well written character driven novel with a great cast of townspeople, all unique in their voice and personality. I love the unlikely friendships and found family vibes. And while this is technically Christian fiction with many mentions of 'the creator', it isn't so overly religious that it couldn't be enjoyed by non-Christian folks. As someone who doesn't normally gravitate toward Christian fiction, I was still able to enjoy this as the story itself was strong and kept me engaged. The faith aspects felt more a part of the characters' lives versus intended for the reader, if that makes sense?
🎧 𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸: I read this by switching back and forth between audio and print, and while both were good, the narrator really elevated this! Wonderful performance.
I love the way Katie Powner brings her characters to life. Whether it's a human or an animal you feel fully invested in their story. I will post some of my favorite lines from the book once it has been published. This book is hopeful, heartbreaking and entertaining. The characters struggle with abandonment, verbal abuse, foster care, bullying, and everyday struggles. Katie does a great job bringing you through their journey and giving them hope and showing them they are not alone.
Katie has this amazing way of animating animals in a story. Pearl the potbellied pig is my favorite character 🙂
Thank you @netgalley and @authorkatiepowner for the advance copy of this book. I have already preordered the book for our bookclub!
Another great Katie Powner story. She writes the best characters. Doesn’t matter how old they are, how different they are, or even if they’re a pig. I fall in love with them every time.
A terrific story full of flawed characters, friendship and hope. A book that lingers long after finishing. Set in rural northern Montana, the little town of Sleeping Grass holds the promise of second chances for a cast of unique characters.
"Anyone who wants to tell the truth must be brave."
Wow, this was a page turner, with its masterful storytelling and characters that seem to come to life. I loved Pete 'the Poet' and his sidekick Pearl, the pig. He was a great underdog hero. His musings were so heartfelt along with his care for others. Touching on deep themes of abandonment, bullying, domestic violence and growing old, this book makes you think about how to truly love your neighbor. It was convicting. I liked how Windy Ray's quiet wisdom, loyal friendship, and simple faith is contagious, lending others the spark of belief and hope.
"Everything God makes has value, whether we choose to see it or not."
A wonderful story from start to finish! Instant add to my favorites list. Solid 5 stars!

Happy Pub Day to Katie Powner and The Wind Blows in Sleeping Grass! This was one of my most anticipated novels of the year and I loved everything about it. This 'general fiction' story will appeal to a wide range of readers - no history, mystery, or romance but an outstanding tale well told.
In her trademark style, the author creates characters with great depth and humor who lead ordinary lives in small Montana towns. Pete, Wilma, and Lily live in Sleeping Grass and could easily be ignored by society: a man who drives a garbage truck, a senior citizen who's beginning to struggle with daily activities, and a reclusive woman who cultivates a beautiful garden but seldom leaves her home. They carry secrets and regrets and form an unlikely 'family.' A 'colorful' array of secondary characters add interest, wisdom and comedy.
The blowing wind in the title symbolizes challenges the characters face, and they are considerable. Content warnings include domestic abuse, financial exploitation, anger management issues, bullying, and discussion of abortion. But alongside life's trials there's references to poetry, books, ice cream, Indigenous philosophy, and many laughs, including an unforgettable scene in a restaurant kitchen on Valentine's Day night. The organic threads of faith and hope elevate this from four to five stars for me.
Every Powner novel includes animals, and they are always full of personality. This story wouldn't be the same without Pearl the pot-bellied pig or Apisi the three-legged dog. Both bring heart and humor to the plot in meaningful ways.
Thank you to Bethany House, UpLit Reads, and NetGalley for review copies of this memorable novel. I loved this book, and it's now more difficult to choose my favorite Powner book - such a wonderful problem to have.
This book was EXACTLY what I love about well-written Christian fiction "with an edge." Real, authentic people. Serious issues. High stakes. Realistic relationships. And NO trite "happily ever after" endings (I know some love those - but not me) - but, instead, real hope for EVERY character as the book ends. Pete may be one of my very favorite characters in "readingdom" -Katie Powner is at her best in this powerful story.
There is something that was just so sweet about this book. Maybe sweet isn’t the right word… wholesome? Regardless, it felt like a breath of fresh air. It wasn’t stuffy, it wasn’t trying too hard, it just was real people trying to do their best to follow God. Plus, there’s a pet pig.
Pete Ryman considers himself barely above the refuse he collects every day. A mother who left him, a sister he's disappointed, a string of rash choices made from emotions he didn't know how to handle. At least being a trash collector allows him some self-sufficiency in his middle age without having to interact much with the public. All he needs is his potbellied pig Pearl and Windy Ray, his one friend.
There's something inside Pete that I don't think he even realizes. He has the ability to see the things others overlook or even discard and find the value and beauty in them. Whether that was rescuing Pearl after she was dumped at the landfill, nabbing what someone has put out with their trash and restoring it to give to someone in need, or even the way he looks at the people in the town of Sleeping Grass. He sees a part of them that no one else sees.
So it is with Windy Ray, with Wilma, with Lily and Dani and Braedon. As each one enters his life, Pete sees the good and is willing to give his all to promote the safety and well-being of each vulnerable one.
This novel invites you into Sleeping Grass and quickly grabs hold of your heart. Real world griefs, regrets, and hope spill out over the pages for Pete and his friends. People whom others overlook and even reject hold great value. Just like life, things in this story are not tied up in a neat bow, but I think that stirs my heart even more.
I highly recommend this and all of Katie Powner's other novels. They'll make you laugh, make you cry, and leave you thinking long after you turn the last page.
I received my copy of the book from the author. All thoughts in this review are my own.
Such a wholesome book. The author excels at writing characters all across the age range. The characters and their pet sidekicks were all so quirky… I wasn’t expecting the subtle humour that was constantly originating from each of them. Some dark topics are dealt with, such as domestic abuse, drug addiction & abandonment, but it’s not harped on in gory detail which I appreciated. All in all an exceptionally clean book in every possible sense; a breath of fresh air.
This review by Librarian Christine Barth was first published in the September 2023 issue of Library Journal.
In remote Montana, a trash collector with anger issues who likes poetry and converses mostly with his potbellied pig is an unlikely hero. But Powner (Where the Blue Sky Begins) has readers rooting for Pete the garbageman from page one.
The small town of Sleeping Grass is on the Hi-Line, where the land and the people are being slowly eroded by the wind and the harsh winters. Pete grew up here, before the bottom fell out and he was shuttled through a series of foster homes; he is only back now because it was the one place willing to overlook his past mistakes and offer him a living wage.
He meets a cast of characters, including a debt-ridden octogenarian and a grieving Siksika man, who help heal the hurts of the past and teach him how to live, but his new friends have problems and secrets of their own.
VERDICT: Powner's real-life experience as a seasoned foster mother shines through in this tale of finding treasure in the people and things that others have cast aside. The secondary characters are funny, flawed, and so unusual that readers will be clamoring for more.
This book seems to touch on several different real life issues. It’s another well written book by this author. It keeps you turning the pages I liked Pearl too! Thanks to the author for the early copy
Only Katie Powner can take a garbage worker, a wise Native American, and a regretful widow and create an unforgettable, award winning story that will stay in your heart for a long while. Oh. I can’t forget another primary character - a potbellied pig named Pearl. She is pretty much in charge of the whole group and they know it….but certainly wouldn’t admit it.
I firmly believe that God weaves people and circumstances in and out of our lives. So, the culmination of this band of misfits in Sleeping Grass at this particular time is endearing to me. Each are sitting in their present because of past decisions. Some they had control of, some were made for them and some are just part of life. Love, care and forgiveness can be hard teachers. They each include a relationship and relationships cost us something.
Christina Moore nailed this story in audiobook. The voices were unique and easy to follow. Well done.
This book is suitable for teens and older with no inappropriate intimate scenes and no bad language. Topics-foster care, spousal abuse, fighting, drinking (not graphic-each handled with spiritual wisdom).
This was a heartwarming story of found family who is there for each other no questions asked. Sleeping Grass may be the smallest small town but is where we find some interesting characters. Pete is troubled and trying to escape his past. Windy Ray is very unique but complex and interesting at the same time. Wilma is the biggest meddler in the world but means well. Also, if my husband would let me, I would gladly adopt Pearl 🐷 and Apisi 🐶.
I enjoyed the story although I wanted a bit more from the ending. I felt there was more to each characters stories and felt the ending was a bit unresolved. This was a fairly quick read with short chapters which I enjoy. The characters showed a lot of growth and the author touched on some tough topics throughout. I didn’t realize this would have a religious element to it which did throw me off but didn’t over take the plot. This also did read as a historical fiction even though it wasn’t. So if historical fiction is your vibe, you should definitely check this one out!
This was a very unusual story. It's a Christian genre but not at all preachy. In fact, it's Christian in an unusual way. The story deals with the subjects of abandonment and self-incrimination. I could relate as my father left when I was barely more than a toddler.
This story kept my attention and flowed fairly well. The characters were also fairly well fleshed out. As well as the two issues already mentioned there was also two more that I don't want to reveal and spoil the story.
The editing was not bad but could have been better. My other problem with the story was that it didn't end well. I wish there had been an epilogue instead of leaving me dangling.
Over all I'll give this a 3 out of 5. The ending was the reason for the lower score. I received this book through Libraything giveaway. I am not required to give a review of any kind but they recommend a review of your own thoughts, good or bad. These are my own thoughts, freely given.
This was a reread for me. I am in love with Katie Powner writings and I believe this book was my favorite of hers. The story of redemption between brother and sister, between friends, this book packs a punch but does it with a sense of humor mixed in. There also is Pearl the pig thrown in to make you definitely fall in love with this wonderful story. This book is up for a Christy award which is so deserving. A 5 star read which I would recommend to anyone.
Welcome to Sleeping Grass, a small town where the characters are flawed and so very real. Through deepening friendships and family ties, each character discovered new sources of hope. The hope infused courage, strength and confidence into their lives and relationships.
I loved how pets were an important part of life in Sleeping Grass. The pets added a richness and vitality to the everyday lives of the characters, much like they do in real life. The storyline about Miss Pearl not parting easily with her pastries had me smiling and laughing more than once. So very funny!
More than one character carried a burden of regrets. Through second chances, forgiveness and much grace being extended, burdens were shared and made lighter. Smiles replaced some of the tears and hope was restored and shared.
Pete had been taught to love words. After reading this well written book, it is obvious to me that the author truly loves words. Well done!
I received complimentary copies of this book through UpLit Reads and NetGalley from Bethany House Publishers. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
What a wonderful new novel by author Katie Powner. Wow, does she ever know how to create compelling characters that claim a spot in your heart—and also communities that make you hope for sequels. And this book is no different. I was left wishing I knew what was going to happen next for each of the characters because -- like in real life -- things didn't turn out the way I thought they might. Also the themes and truths expressed in this book are so important and so universally needed by all, and it was so great to see how each of the characters grew as they faced challenges.
If you like contemporary fiction with real heart and that deal with the often difficult issues of life, add this one to your list along with the author's other books. I loved Where the Blue Sky Begins as well and now need to catch up on the first two from her backlist. I'll also be watching the horizon for what Katie Powner has for us next!
Oh my goodness, loved it! I so quickly became invested in the lives of the dear characters in The Wind Blows in Sleeping Grass. Such is a gentle story told with humor and a whole lot of life and depth kept me turning pages to see how everything works out.
I think everyone should have a friend that teaches him funny rhyming expressions, instead of cuss words. This is way more creative! "Snake on a rake, it was cold." "Snitch in a ditch." "Tank in a bank." "Moose on the loose." "Tike on a bike, what was he going to do?" "Mole in a hole."
And who can forget Pearl the pet pig?
From Wilma not wanting to fail her friend's children again, and the guilt that she's carried for years, to Pete and Dani who had difficult lives since their mother left them, to Windy Ray and his humor, encouragement and wisdom, to Lily in a difficult situation, the author weaves a beautiful story with threads of mystery. Windy Ray's advice is perfect. "Windy Ray says the Creator made us to need each other and to need Him." "Everything God makes has value, whether we choose to see it or not."
I highly recommend this beautiful story by author Katie Powner.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and Net Galley for allowing me to read an early copy. All opinions are my own.
I really like books by this author. The main characters in this book are Pete Ryman and Wilma Jacobson. Pete Ryman is the garage truck driver in the small town of Sleeping Grass, Montana. He has one friend, Windy Ray, and his pet pig, Pearl. Wilma Jacobsen is an older widow. She employs a lady named Lily as her housekeeper even though she does not really need one, but she likes the company. All of these characters bring life to this novel. I find myself so drawn into their stories that I feel as though I am there with them. This book really has heart behind it and it definitely comes out as you read.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. The opinions in this review are my own.
