A Guide to the Battles of the American Revolution

Rate this book
A Guide to the Battles of the American Revolution is the first comprehensive account of every engagement of the Revolution, a war that began with a brief skirmish at Lexington Green on April 19, 1775, and concluded on the battlefield at the Siege of Yorktown in October 1781.In between were six long years of bitter fighting on land and at sea. The wide variety of combats blanketed the North American continent from Canada to the Southern colonies, from the winding coastal lowlands to the Appalachian Mountains, and from the North Atlantic to the Caribbean.

Unlike existing accounts, A Guide to the Battles of the American Revolution by authors Theodore P. Savas and J. David Dameron presents each engagement in a unique way. Each battle entry offers a wide and rich-but consistent-template of information to make it easy for readers to find exactly what they are seeking.

Every entry begins with introductory details including the date of the battle, its location, commanders, opposing forces, terrain, weather, and time of day. The detailed body of each entry offers both a Colonial and British perspective of the unfolding military situation, a detailed and unbiased account of what actually transpired, a discussion of numbers and losses, an assessment of the consequences of the battle, and suggestions for further reading. Many of the entries are supported and enriched by original maps and photos. Fresh, scholarly, informative, and entertaining, A Guide to the Battles of the American Revolution will be welcomed by historians and general enthusiasts everywhere.

This book contains practically every battle fought in the American Revolution with tons of maps and enough details to recreate the battles if you desired to do so. When one reads this book you will be amazed at the size and scope of the Revolution. Most people hear about the opening shots at Lexington and Concord and the surrender at Yorktown, but hardly any Americans know anything else. This book will definitely change that! The author even proposes that this is truly the first World War because when the French and Spanish became involved the battles began to happen all over the globe. I wouldn't go that far myself, but I would consider it perhaps the first war fought on a global scale, but to be classed as world war it needs the involvement of the entire world. But nonetheless this book is an outstanding addition to the shelf and anybody interested in the American Revolution it truly becomes an essential item indeed.

If you ever wanted a book that covers every battle of the American Revolution, complete with participants, tactical setup, maps and results, this is the one for you. A great reference for the military historian. I was surprised to learn that Daniel Boone fought in the last battle (Battle of Blue Licks) before peace was established. One of his opponents was John Butler of 'Butler's Rangers', a local hero in the Niagara Region.

Really an encyclopedia of battles in chronological order. Each entry includes a decent map, a brief description of events leading to the battle from both British and Continental viewpoints, and an overview of the terrain.

I won't be reading it cover to cover again, but I will be referring to it often.

Although I got bogged at a few points, this was a very good book to one wanting more information in this area. It mentioned a number of battles that I have seen mentioned on a map, but never know they were a revolutionary battle.

An excellent book analyzing the Battles of the Revolutionary War. Following the battles in chronological order it gives a brief overview, 2-8 pages of each battle. It describes the commanders, the terrain, the number of troops involved, the outcome, it's impact on the war and most importantly what remains, if any of the battlefield today. It also has maps showing how the battle unfolded. It also gives a more information section at the end of the each battle if you wish to delve deeper into any specific battle.

A comprehensive reference for the revolution. I consulted it often while writing From Lexington to Yorktown. Both the British and American perspectives are given on each battle. The maps are especially useful.

While not a thorough military history of the war, this book gives an excellent overview of the campaigns and battles of the war, including actions on the Western Frontier and in the Caribbean. The introduction provides a brief but good background on the militaries of the countries that fought in North America.
