Going into the book, as we first met the characters on the plane, I was very much afraid we were going to be stuck flat, stereotypical, predictable stock characters. It seemed like Kim was stocking the cast for a gender/sexuality conflict, but I'm delighted to say nothing could be further from the truth. The characters on the island, and even their loved ones back home, are fully realised, fully developed characters with personalities and emotions. The creation of a friendship between Dean (uppity gay guy) and Michael (down-to-earth homophobic guy) is so subtle, you've already accepted it before you realise the antagonism is gone. As for the budding romance between Rachel (straight girl escaping a cheating husband) and Denna (a lesbian very much in love with her partner back home). . . wow, that was so sweet, so tender, and romantic. It's never forced, and never pushes the boundaries of disbelief.

Overall, this is a wonderfully well-written book. The plane crash is as tense and exciting as any big budget thiller; the sense of despair as each character washes up on the island alone is intensely powerful. The friendships and the romance are handled so beautifully, I admit I shed more than a few honest tears before the end.

Ultimately, though, what won me over about this book is the way it ends. No spoilers here (you need to discover the joy for yourself) but the ending doesn't arrive where or when you'd expect . . . and that's a wonderful gift to unwrap.

Absolutely recommended.

Very nice book with an original storyline, interesting multidimensional characters, and a very sweet romance. I found it hard to put the book down and was really touched by all the characters' stories. For the first time I've felt the need to know more about supporting characters.

It's a truly beautiful story which starts with a tragic scene that is very well written and gets you hooked right away.

Not my favorite book by the author, but still yet a nice reading for a lazy afternoon.
It was really nice to see how the author "threw" into the plot the a few main characters from her other works (Beth Sayers from "First" and Garrison, Keller, and Parker from "Control") - she got extra points for that :)

Detailed score: 4.5

Wow. What an unexpected and delightful surprise this book was. A cast of well-rounded characters are cast in a situation familiar from movie and TV but refreshingly unexplored in the lesrom genre. It gave our cast an interesting and thought provoking set of challenges to overcome and angst to resolve. Even though it's relatively clear where the story is going, it was also enthralling and had me up at all hours on a school night reading 'just one more chapter'.

The .5 star loss and decision to round down rather than round up are because of a couple of relatively minor yet annoying enough points:

- typos and editing issues: they didn't take me out of the story but there are a few typos and a few missing words and it did get a bit grating

- the character growth and description of island life is so rich that it felt like the author floundered at little as the book went on

- the start of the book was a lot of names and personalities and relatives etc at once... It got a little confusing. This is a very minor quibble though as it doesn't take more than a few (gripping) chapters to work it all out.

Overall a rich and highly enjoyable lesfic/ lesrom novel

I bought this book a long time ago. And I am just reading it. This is an emotional rollercoaster of emotions. The storyline was well done and it kept me going with each page. I really like how you got to see all the characters during all the events not once was I confused. I definitely recommend this book.

Amazing book. I read this one while I was in a fantasy and fiction spiral and I thought I'd be utterly bored by mundane romance. But mundane it is not. First of all, this is not just a romance book(no offense to romance books as I enjoy them too), it is so much more. Exploring the stories of multiple people and in such a brilliant manner that I could feel the love, pain, anger and frustration from every character. I was really pleased about the adorable relationship that Michael had with his wife but then he went and became rather daft and I felt betrayed because it is one of the few times I cheer for a cis-hetero Texan man- I'm glad to say he did have a change of heart and maybe belief. All that is to express how well the author captured the emotions of all. This book is not only for lovers or those longing for love. A teenager can relate to may be one of the least infuriating and smartest teenagers I've seen in any book so far. A mom can relate to any of the mothers portrayed in the books, some who made mistakes and some who love to the point of hurt. Even a 'macho' man can explore the 'dichotomy' between showing love and being a 'man' or in a more progressive thought, they may explore being a father and a husband in the characters eyes. For those who seek love, I think the love between Will and Dean should be a love for the ages. But for a much harder love and for those who enjoy star-crossed situations, a sapphic story is waiting for you that is worth the wait.

I originally rated this book 4 stars due to feeling like some of it could have been left out. However, after sleeping on it and waking up I can’t for one second stop thinking about it. Even at work eating lunch with co-workers when asked what did you do this weekend, I normally say oh nothing but today I said I read this amazing book let me tell you about it! We had a deep 45 minute conversation around this book and the talking of how it should be a movie. I instantly logged back in and changed my rating to a 5. I highly recommend this book to everyone, it is one that will linger and haunt you in the best way!

Fantastic read, I could not put it down. Stories of the Survivors and their families who thought they were dead. The story weaves between the island survivors and the lives of their loves trying to move forward. This captures the pain of after the empty burials and giving up the search. Then how do survivors return to lives when the are found. Well thought out story.

Close to perfect

I liked the characters for this novel, all being unique and memorable. Having said that, keeping them all organized was a little tricky. LOTS of characters and side stories. Very beautiful story that will compel you to finish :)

Really good, interesting book. While I enjoyed the castaways surviving on the island, I was even more eagerly awaiting the chaos that would erupt once the characters got home and had to deal with having been 'dead' more than a year. Very strongly recommended.

This adventure had all the emotions running through it. The characters were so well written and believable. The 6 on the island survived because they worked through the fiffences. The powerful writing was coping later. A Must Read

It didn't start predictable at least not in the lesbian genre. Quite a number of character and the writer wove them in quite well. Delightful read

If you can get beyond the first 100 pages then it is well worth it. I almost stopped reading about 80 pages in but I’m really glad I didn’t. There’s a few editing errors and the author has an odd preoccupation with the colour of people’s eyes which is a bit grating at times, but the story itself is wonderful. I was worried about the stereotypes introduced in the first chapter but it was a heartwarming story of love and life that I couldn’t put down in the end!

My Recommendation:
If you like a slow-burn romance then this is a great choice for you. This is also a great book for challenging stereotypes and expectations, as people are not what they always seem and there is a large amount of character development that happens throughout the events of the story.

Not For Everyone:
Honestly, if you're not a fan of LGBT books then I would suggest avoiding this book where possible. There are plenty of other characters and it's not a necessarily "gay" story, but there are gay characters and gay story lines in it. If you're interested in changing your perception on books that feature LGBT characters then you may still enjoy this, but be warned. Arguably 1049 Club is largely a romance novel, yes, there is an element of survival but it's more to do with the emotional response to their situation than physical. So if you're looking for a survival/action story, I'd suggest going elsewhere.

To The Author:
Why all the eyes? Every interaction is punctuated with a comment on the colour of someone's eyes. It's a little odd at times and really out of place in others. Especially when they're across the room from each other. And did you mean to choose such stereotypical characters to challenge these views or was it more about establishing a cross-section of society?

If You've Never Read The Book And Want To Say You Have:
Sometimes it's the two people in love that take the longest to realise it. And make sure you always pack your berry basher in your suitcase, you never know when you might need it.

Academic Prompts:
How expectations are shaped by the society in which we live.
The concept of a holiday romance mentality in a monogamous relationship.

Stellar Book

I was a fan of this author back in her fan fiction days. I read an early version of 1049 Club back then and it was a story that stayed with me. Finding it so many years later as a published book was like finding a lost treasure and I had to buy it.

I spent a weekend cuddled reading this gem and it brought on all the feels. 1049 Club is not just about surviving a plane crash and then being stranded on a deserted island but also surviving what happens next.

This is an amazing piece of work and I felt sadness, frustration, joy and love as if I was there experiencing it along with the six. I cannot express how much I love this story. An absolute must read.

Such a wild ride of emotions in this book! I cried several times throughout. It’s a wonderful tale of tragedy, survival, and adapting to the world after you’ve been fundamentally changed. I love the Island 6. They absolutely stole my heart they way they put a side their differences and come together to ensure their survival.

It was also a real treat to see Keller, Garrison and a seventeen year old Parker. I absolutely love them in Control and it’s so wonderful to see them again in this book. Beth is another character from First. I loved her words to Rachel in the book. A bit bitter sweet.

I didn't finish the book, I mostly glanced through the last half of the book because it became really predictable. It's a good setting, characters are likable but something just doesn't tick, maybe not enough suspense to hook you until the end because you could already see how they are going to battle out their inner struggles.

I really enjoyed the book -- as may be evidenced by how quickly I finished it. It held my interest from the beginning and didn't let go.
The characters were believable - both in their depth and development, and reactions to the circumstances they found themselves in.

I know personally that create that amount of characters and voices them is something very complicated. The first part is great, maybe a story decays a little after the group leaving the island and can't continue with the typical argument that most expect, but I loved it.
I enjoy reading it.
