Queens of Khula City #1

Queen of Wildcards

Rate this book
They give me a choice between captivity or death. But I'm giving them something better—a queen.

I'm no stranger to the mafia underworld, but the Wildcards are a different breed. When I become a liability, they kidnap me to stack the deck--and in their world, the house always wins.

Spade, the unhinged brawler, is determined to bend me to his will, but I'm not going down without a fight, even if it's to the death.

Joker, the blue-eyed blonde playboy, has a closet full of clothes left from random one-night stands, so when he calls me beautiful, I know it's all an act.

BlackJack, the strong, silent type, is always watching me from afar, but it's what he doesn't do that leaves me wanting to hear my name on his lips.

Ace, no stranger to this business, rules with an iron fist, but beneath the surface is a beast he struggles to keep leashed, and if I'm not careful, it'll bite me, too.

They're thwarting every attempt at escape, and I'm out of ideas, so you know what they say: if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Every minute spent with these irresistible men drags me further into their world, and suddenly, I can't remember why I ever wanted to leave.

When their enemies come looking for blood, I'm suddenly more than a liability--I'm their weakness. I'm the queen of their hearts, but do I have what it takes to be the Queen of the Wildcards when all hell breaks loose?

Heleva Risque is not afraid to get her hands dirty, and neither are the heroes she writes. From complete alphaholes to grumpy, brooding bad boys, and everything in between, her heroes are walking red flags and trauma-filled shells of their former selves, but by the end of each story, not only will you want to cry for these wounded, unhinged men, but you'll be crawling into their beds, begging to be their good girls.
And you'll love every minute of it.
Ms. Risque has several series on the docket, including her leading mafia romance series, the Khula City Crime Syndicate, and a standalone, one-shot romance so dark, so filthy, so sinful, that you'll need the confessional on Sunday to cleanse your soul.
If you've got a kindle reads list that would make conversations at Thanksgiving dinner awkward, you're in the right place.

Mallory Stanton was just doing her job when a client gave her too much information. She did not pay too much attention to it until she found herself in a cage with her client and three other men surrounding her. They gave her a choice. She chose to stay. She knew the world they survived in. They all had demons. Mallory's was her dad. Slim Jim was notorious and used her to get what he wanted. Mallory had a tough life but she was making it with her cats by her side. Her father had ruined her career. She was already dealing with so much.

Joker knew he messed up. It was his fault that Mallory was here. Now he just needed to make sure she stayed alive. That was the least he could do, right? Spade craved blood. He got answers for the crew the hard way. Mallory stabs him and he falls in love. Blackjack is the quiet hacker. He deals with all things computers. He rarely talks and never touches anyone or allows them to touch him. Ace is the leaders of the Wildcards. This is his family. Mallory will have to prove her loyalty time and time again to convince him that she is worth her life.

Mallory wants to live but nightmares creep in. Constantly trying to prove herself takes a toll. Maybe she should just give up. These guys fall and fall hard. Mallory is not one to play with. Sure she has some kinks in her chain but overall she is a boss and this boss is ready to be the leader the Wildcards need. Ace was a big hurdle for her to get over and every time she thought she succeeded, he threw another test her way. Walking away might be the best for all. I am loving this series. These women have these men and their knees quickly. Khula City does not know what hit them.

This is different than any other mafia book I've ever read in the best way possible. Mallory is so badass and definitely doesn't play a damsel in distress. I can relate to her I think if I was ever in her situation my first thought would be to worry about my pets at home too. Never have I ever read a dark romance that makes me actually laugh out loud but this had me dying on my couch. The psych major in me loves how it talks about mental health and trauma and Mallory actually wants to help her men heal. I loved each character but I have a huge soft spot for Blackjack. They all bring something special to this book. I do have one question though.. how did mallory react to seeing her cats again???? The spicy scenes in this were so good and I loved how each man had his own style.

Unhinged mafia men who find their equally unhinged queen in the most unexpected way!

The dark humor in this book is on point! I got some good laughs in and this fit right in with the dynamic between all the characters. This was light on the mafia but still dark enough to make the reader think on their book boyfriend morals.

Mallory really surprised me. We get little glimpses of the inner Mallory, but when she finally embraces all of herself it is beautiful! Some of the spicy scenes were 🥵🥵🥵🔥🔥🔥and with a virgin MMC .

I enjoyed the depth of all the characters. The author did a great job of giving each of the men a spotlight in the book for us to get to know what makes them tick.

This book is one I would 100% recommendation for all my mafia why choose loving friends!

Love love love

This book drew me in faster than any book has in a long while. Like seriously. I thought maybe I was losing my love of reading or something because I stopped being able to smash a book in a day, but this one drew me the hell in.

It was everything you’d want out of a captive mafia romance but without the “woe is me why is this happening to me” trope. Mallory was strong and fierce right from the start and I could not get enough.

Queen!!!!

A solid 4.5 stars. Loved watching Mallory settle in with the guys and find her place. There was a bit of rushing at the end, but it didn’t take away from my enjoyment. The chemistry was off the charts and the spice was 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️. The dynamic she had with each guy was very well done. It didn’t feel like she had the same experience with all four.
Can’t wait for the next book in the series. I’ve read Queen of Made Men, but can’t leave a review for some reason. But still excited for the next Queen.

I Need My Own Set of Wildcards!!!

This book is full of action, emotions, and heat! This is a why choose read that I couldn’t put down. I loved how each man developed a relationship with Mallory and loved how the author was able to provide such depth to all of the men. This is the second book from this author I have read, and I can’t wait to read more.  These have both been amazing reads. Well done!

Part of the Syndicate Queens of Khula City can we say craziness from the first page to the last so hang on ensure you are buckled up this is a wild ride, dangerous men, alpha’s personified, possessive, oh, gorgeous, brooding all the makings of a story consisting with three D’s (dark, delicious, and dirty) 😊. There will be suspense, betrayal, death, darkness, secrets reveled, violence, hope, forgiveness, and maybe even love (ALL THINGS TO EXPECT FROM THE MAFIA WORLD). By the time you’ve figured out who is who and what is what, you’re already hooked, and you may as well give up the fight and prepare yourself for an all-nighter! CAN’T SAY YOU WEREN’T WARNED!!!!!. What do your do with four sexy as all get out guys all wildcards Spade, Ace, Joker, and Blackjack each with a distinct personality, a unique set of skills, and a role to play in all they do. Malory intelligent working as a therapist not making much money but helping others all behind the scenes for an anonymous emergency website but sometime you can’t pick those who need help and one evening she gets a call with a drunk and really upset man talking him off the ledge was the highlight but then he started telling about the crimes he committed or been a part of but the problem he works for the Wildcard gang and they can’t her live with everything he told her so of course they have to kidnap her giving her a choice be a captive or death boy what a choice but they didn’t count on getting a feisty, sassy, unwilling to give up what little she has and the darkness they didn’t see coming inside of her but where are they headed all of them, can they learn to work together, will she still want her freedom after getting to really know each one of her men and can there be more than just they kidnapped her taking from her life something like happiness?.

⭐️ Plot: 3,5/5
🌶️ Spice: 4/5
📖 Genre: Mafia/Criminal Underworld Reverse Harem
🏞️ Setting: Unknown City??
🗣️ POV: Multiple
🛏️ Tropes:
- Kidnapping
- Who Hurt you?
- Forces Proximity
- Wrong Place Wrong Time
- reverse Harem
- MMC’s are unhinged, slightly psychotic criminals
- Consensual Non Consent
- Held against her will
- trust issues
- Steamy

The story is decent, basically after a heist gone wrong, one of the members of The Wildcards has a crisis of conscience and calls an anonymous therapy line.
Our FMC answers, and she hears him spilling about things she should not be hearing.

They decide she knows too much, and track her down to ensure she doesn’t speak to authorities.
So they kidnap her and hold her captive. Except they did not bank on the fiery little Mallory. She certainly gives them all a proper run for their money.

Over the time that she’s held captive, she wiggles her way into their minds and hearts and realizes that they do the same. Not all of them are receptive to her however.

And unfortunately, the chickens from the heist have come home to roost…The Wildcards need to watch their backs because they’re being hunted too.
——————————————————****——————————

So, I’m not sure about why the detail of her father being a criminal was brought up to be honest. I don’t really feel it added to the story. Also, once she was with the guys, he was never heard from again? I was waiting for him to come into the picture somehow but no…
He could have just been any dead beat dad and it would have had the same effect.

The steam is steamy, there are a bunch of kinks and TW’s so read those if you’re sensitive.

My feelings on this book are mixed.

Mallory, the FMC, was a highlight for me. She wasn’t a constant damsel in distress. She could hold her own, had a backbone, and was confident without being egotistical, which was a refreshing change of pace. Her father was repeatedly mentioned as a known criminal, which made me feel like it was important to the plot, but it wasn't. That felt odd and unnecessary.

As for the love interests, I wasn’t a fan of Ace, but I really liked the other Wildcards, especially Blackjack and Joker. I felt they were the more fleshed out characters. We got a lot of backstory on Blackjack, but not much on the other MMCs.

My biggest issue with the book was its uneven pacing. For most of the story, the author took the time to build the characters and plot in great detail, which I appreciated. But then, suddenly, everything rushed to a conclusion. I could feel the tension building, only to realize I was at 90% read. The final stretch felt abrupt, as if the author got tired of writing and just decided to wrap it up. It left me feeling unsatisfied, which was disappointing given how much I had enjoyed the rest of the book.

Overall, while the ending didn’t work for me, the book still had strong elements, and I’d be open to reading more from this author in the future.

I really liked this book. It had a lot of spice and plot that kept me intrigued throughout the whole book. I'm looking forward to the next book and see where the next path takes them. There's a lot of trust issues going on but that's not surprising in a gang of 4 dark men with troubled pasts and a female therapist who goes into the profession to figure out how to fix herself. Mallary being a good therapist she is, takes a call last minute and gets into a situation of "wrong place, wrong time", and listens to an extremely drunk Joker spill his guts asking why he is the way he is. As the conversation goes on, he gets a little too comfortable and ends up discussing recent events he's been involved with of a criminal nature. Now enters the rest of the gang to help clean up Joker's mess and the only way to know exactly what the good Doctor knows or has possibly passed on to the police, is to kidnap her and interrogate her. Except Mal knows how to interrogate too and one by one she figures out each man's weakness and how she can manipulate them so she can escape. But does she really want to go back to her old boring life?

Tropes: 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞, 𝐌𝐅𝐌𝐌𝐌, 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞, 𝐦𝐚𝐟𝐢𝐚/𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐠, 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬

I think the best part of this book is how no nonsense the FMC is. I loved her snark and backbone when it came to the guys. She had some really great moments where she stood up to Ace.

𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐝𝐞 is the unhinged one. He relishes pain, chaos and loves how Mallory handles him.
𝐉𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐫 is the charming Casanova of the group. He also has some vulnerability and I felt bad how Ace treated him sometimes (regarding his mistakes).
𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐣𝐚𝐜𝐤 is my favorite. He is quiet, has a touch aversion, and is a virgin. He is the biggest protector of Mallory.
𝐀𝐜𝐞 is my least favorite. He is against Mallory and the allure she has over his crew. He made a pretty big mistake at the end and I felt like there wasn’t enough (if any) grovel. The scene where Mallory puts him in his place was FIRE though.

There is only 1 group scene at the end. The guys don’t mind sharing but I wanted more group scenes. In the group scene at like ~94%, the author throws in that Blackjack is bisexual and Ace seemed kinda interested. I just felt blindsided by it. It just didn’t seem to fit his character. I would’ve expected it from Joker maybe.

I love a dark mafia RH with a bunch of trigger warnings and this one is definitely added to my list of recommendations. The MFC is one of my favorite I’ve read in the troupe. She’s strong, a fighter, and a complete badass, but also has the perfect amount of compassion and confidence that doesn’t make her egotistical and annoying like sometimes this type of character can become.

I do wish the ending was slowed down some (even if it did make the book longer). I always enjoy the storyline with the smut and although I do really like the ending, I feel like it was over before it even really began and did not include the same amount of storytelling detail as the rest of the book. I do really like how it ended though, and it was tied up nicely to make it a stand alone, but also gives enough opening to include these characters in other future books of the series.

Again, I definitely recommend this book if you love a good RH mafia troupe, with some twisted characters, that you secretly (or not so secretly), would love to have in your bed.

Heleva Risque has that intense writing style that just pulls you in and doesn't let you go until the end and then you still need more. The spicy scenes are 🔥 🥵🥵🥵🥵🔥. I love that she makes sure each of the four characters(Mallory,Ace Spade,Joker and Blackjack) are so different but fit so well together. She has done an amazing job with making you laugh your ass off with the dark humor and keep you intrigued and on the edge needing more. And as i said before keep you there with the spicy scenes.

Mallory is great she isn't the damsel in distress that needs a man to take care of her. She can hold her own and live in this world and i love it. Being a psychiatrist she is able to help each man exactly how he needs even if they don't know it. Spade is my favorite. He is the completely unhinged, psychotic bad boy who takes what he wants when he wants it. Yummy. I also love the brotherhood these men have with each other. Complete and utter love devotion and comraderier.

I loved every part of this book and can't wait to finish the rest of the series.

All it took was one online therapy session with a client to change Mallory's life. Even though at the time Mallory had no clue. This book does have trigger warnings. These men are the Wildcards: Spade, Ace, Joker, and Blackjack. Each man has his own distinct personality and role. Since Mallory knows too much she can either be their captive or face certain death. Each of these men have problems of their own. They really need Mallory mentally, physically, and most important emotionally. Mallory needs people in return as well. Mallory has a precarious past. Mallory is not willing to give away what little power she holds over these men. Expect: mafia, dark romance, enemies to lovers, kidnapping, why choose, reverse harem, virgin, phobias, suspense, explicit, definitely high heat, and contemporary romance. There's a good bit of action and drama especially toward the end of the book.

👉I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review👈

Tropes/triggers: dark RH mafia, MFMMM, knife play, firearm….play, kidnapped FMC, dubcon, noncon

Ohhhh my gosh never have I ever read a 400 page book this fast! Mallory is a smart badass therapist barely making ends meet, working from home for an anonymous emergency therapy website. Her whole life is turned upside down when she unwittingly takes one last call before ending her shift. A visibly drunk and upset man fills the video chat, and Mal being the professional therapist she is talked him off the ledge… which resulted in him spilling all of his recent crimes and getting extra comfortable with her 🙃 The Wildcards gang he’s apart of can’t let her walk when she’ll probably spill to the authorities..

This isn’t your typical dark mafia romance you’ve read several times. It’s unique and captivating for readers who are there for the smut and the plot. I can’t wait for the next book to come out!

This was a really great read. The guys fell in lust with the FLC almost instantly, even though Ace fought it. Ace was absolutely horrible to Mal even though it was his guy who pulled her into the mess. With the things he did to her I’m not sure I’d ever forgive him. I fell in love with Joker, Spade and Blackjack, but especially Blackjack.
I don’t believe this was a case of Stockholm syndrome. Mal has a darkness in her that wasn’t ever fully explained.
This was not the typical RH type read in that the guys are all with her separately. Normally I’d like to see them all together, but with the personalities involved, that wouldn’t have worked in this story.
There were a few edits that need to be made, but overall, I enjoyed this book. Something was always happening and it made me a very active reader.

Interesting, Exciting and Dark!

The Queen of Wildcards is part of the Queen of Khula City series and if you like a dark page-turner with action, suspense and devilish, villainous and morally grey characters with a side of Stockholm syndrome at its max, then this book is for you.

Spade, Joker, Blackjack, Ace and Mallory are all damaged individuals in their own unique way and somehow even in their flawed and imperfect relationship we end up with an HEA!

I think this can be read as a standalone but I would still recommend reading in series order since there are a few characters that make an appearance here in Queen of Wildcards that will have their own book called Queen of Made Men, which I am diving into next and I can’t wait!

Trigger Warning; violence, kidnapping (adult) and held captive, very explicit and sometimes violent sex, talk of suicide attempt in MFC’s past, all characters have mental health issues. This is a why choose and a mafia story.

I received this book for an honest review.

The debut novel of Heleva Risque is a dark, rh, Mafia novel and the first part of a series. Since it is dark themed, please be on the lookout for possible triggers.

I enjoyed the characters and plot in this book and it read well. I would have liked to have some more background info or further details in some points, but mostly the story can hold the suspense and makes you want to read on. The last two chapters feel a bit rushed to me, and the ending kind of sudden - I would have have liked a bit more drama.

The book does not have a cliffhanger, so could probably be read as a stand-alone, but it is - as before mentioned - a first book to a series.

If you enjoy Mafia rh with witty characters, a strong FMC and the men from sweet to a*hole you are in the right place.

What a ride!! Roller coaster of emotions, ups and downs that are dizzying. Mallory was living her life until she answered a call and changed everything. Joker, Spade, Ace, and Black Jack have a mile long list of traumas, physical abuse, and anger issues. Good thing they kidnap a therapist!

Heleva is genius with her plot, dialogue, and characters. Finding each character’s humanity took dialogue that was crafted with care and skill. Developing the plot line from terrifying to sympathetic with a realistic portrayal took a very deft approach. Her sex scenes were deliciously filthy with the right amount of self awareness which added tremendously to each character’s growth. Loved this twisty turny funky love fest!!.

Dark Hot Deliciousness

I was lucky enough to read the prequel so I’ve been waiting impatiently for this one.

It. Is. So. Good!

She’s amazing at creating a whole world for her characters. Her character creation is freaking incredible. Then she draws you in so that you become invested in them. The plot moves consistently, you see the passage of time and relationships between them build.

This is not mafia lite, there is lots of violence, sex, threats of sexual violence, so be aware. Heleva REALLY knows how to write some flaming hot sex scenes. You will need dry panties and a cold shower.

Of course, last minute plot twist has me screaming! ( no spoilers).

Aarrrggghhhhh now I have to wait for the next one.

I loved this so much!!!

Queen of Wildcards is book #1 in the Syndicate Queens of Khula City. It's a dark why choose Mafia crime syndicate romance. Make sure to check the trigger warning.

Where can I find my own Joker 😂😂

Mallory is an online therapist and one late night call changes everything for her when the patient she is talking to reveals a little too much and she gets drug into the Wildcards.

Well, all I can say is this is absolutely amazing!!! Mal is such a baddie and I adore her!! And the guys!?! Ahhhh! They are so freaking hot! Spade, Ace, Blackjack and Joker are alpha and maybe a little crazy but FINE!!! There is non stop action, the plot keeps you glued to the pages and the spice is 🔥🔥🔥🔥!!

When an online therapist answers a video chat for her new patient, things take a turn and she finds herself stuck with the dilemma, does she flight and flight in the hopes that she may survive or does she stay possibly captive and show them who really is on top. This why choose, mafia, four MC to one full of surprises FMC, romance with even a virgin MC, had my heart bounding and my kitty purring. Each beautifully written male characters has his own spot light and uniqueness, even with some mental health/ PTSD parts it was delicious. The spice was perfect 🥵, but it was bada$$ Female lead that had me cheering and ringing my heart. Be for wormed the ending nearing had me flying out of my seat, so hold one tight and enjoy this wicked Queens ride! 10/10 would recommend

2.5 ⭐️ this was not a well done rh imo. like besides other problems it had with plot, pacing, and character development, there wasnt any group activity until 98% ??!!!! im a believer that a good rh needs to be super long or multiple books to get all of the relationships fleshed out. this book was too short (i thought the rest of this series would continue their story but i was wrong)

there was a good amount of tell dont show (ugh). plus i wish she would have tried to escape more than once, or didnt even try at all. it was a weird in between where she was super fiesty at the beginning and then did a complete 180. it started off great then died as the story went on.

disclaimer: it wasnt bad or horrible.. it was just disappointing and im nitpicky haha

This is my first time reading anything by Heleva Risque and let me just say she did not disappoint. The warning that everything in her books is dark and dirty is truly what it is.

Her characters are not just crazy they are certified psycho with obsession and possession tendencies. If you are looking for book boyfriends that will be like if you missing with her I will f*** you up then this a book you should read. This is also a series but every book in the series is a standalone. I give this book 4 🌶🌶🌶🌶 for spicy and 10 for being a great read. If you want know why I rated that high then go read it yourself.

I LOVE this series so far! This author brings another gritty, dirty, fast fast paced story in grand fashion. This time it's Ace, Joker, Mallory, Blackjack and Spades story and it is nail biting, chair gripping fantastic. Mallory
is a Therapist and via a client who has loose lips gets herself in quite a delicious little mess when these guys decide to be certain that she doesn't talk. From there we're embroiled in one adventure after another with her and these men. They definitely keep you on your toes and the heat packed between them will completely melt you it's so hot. Can't wait to move on to book 3!

Wildcards is right! Ace. Blackjack. Joker. Spade. Men fantasies are made of. Bad. Beautiful. So sexy. All unique. All heart pounding.
Mallory is kidnapped by them. She is in survival mode. She has to gain their trust so she can escape. The attraction is off the charts. Who will she pick?
Getting to know these guys was pure pleasure. Funny moments. Panty melting moments. Tense moments. Violent moments. Ah-ha moments. All very entertaining moments!
My kind of romance.
