John Laurens should have died on the 27th of August, 1782. After a failed skirmish at Combahee River , John Laurens is invited to live with his dearest friend, Alexander Hamilton, in New York City. They study the law at King's College together and dream of becoming avid members of congress so they may continue fighting the good fight for America. However, on John Laurens' 28th birthday, his vision for the future changes immensely when he discovers he is expected to raise his daughter, Frances Eleanor Laurens, all by himself. He wonders whether this is divine punishment for hiding such sinful secrets or a miraculous blessing from providence. John wonders if he is truly able to make a real difference for the foundation of his country and for his daughter, or if his "sinful nature" will get in the way and be his greatest downfall...
I was debating on this for a long time but I simply couldn't give it less than 5 stars.
This book was something.
I curse myself not doing a reading vlog, because my gods, did it make me emotional. I don't even remember what was the last time I acted out so much on a book as this.
It took turns that I didn't expect and some elements I would loved to happen differently, but who does not have that experience with literature?
I could not stop smiling at the domestic fluff, or at Frances. But there were clearly parts where I wanted to simply slap John across the face. Honestly, Alexander deserves a praise for putting up with this and not just simply leaving.
And the ending was just as described in a different review. Satisfyingly unsetisfying. It leaves it up to the reader to write their own final happy ending in their head.

I came here to fix my broken heart after the emotional trainwreck that is "Merited Partiality" on AO3 and it left me with different cracks.
I'm not complaining because they did get their happy ending. And it is only on me if there was dissapointment, because I hyped myself up too much.
Anyway if for anything, it is worth reading for the family fluff and the About The Author note.
Beautiful book with my two favourite angsty guys. The most satisfyingly unsatisfying ending that leaves you longing for more. So many happy moments but still painful. I'm in love
I feel bad leaving an honest review because, in short… I didn’t like it. The story was drawn out and very repetitive (especially in the terminology used throughout), I lost interest in many areas but I think with some changes and editing it could be a good story. The spelling and grammatical errors made it very, very difficult to get through. Unfortunately this made me almost put the book down many times. There are multiple errors in every chapter starting with the word “chapter” that is spelled “Chatpter” every. single. time. There is also an error on the back of the book which is sad as this is the section that should be flawless (if not the entire book) as it is going to either make it or break it, this is what makes the sale! I think if the author hires an editor and goes through a publisher she will have success in sales, but until then I wouldn’t read a second book.
DNF because it didn't have the 'feel' of the historical AT ALL. It's a shame because I saw this book recommended under the best John Laurens/Alexander Hamilton story ever, Merited Partiality on AO3, and I was hoping for more of the same. Sadly didn't deliver.
