Getting Started with Let's Read Math Workshops

Let s Read Math is about combining reading with math. The idea is to read a children s book, then do related math activities. The activities cover a wide variety of standards-based math topics. There are several Let s Read Math Funbooks, each of which features activities for 16 different children s books. The Let s Read Math Funbooks are used primarily at home, in classrooms, or as informal curriculum in after school centers. Some of the lessons (about half of the lessons from each Funbook) have been embellished and are referred to as workshops. In the Getting Started with Let s Read Math Workshops manual, you will read about how these workshops are used in a variety of settings, including their most widespread use, as family nights in schools. At a Let s Read Math Family Night, parents and children attend together. Typically they engage in a warm-up pre-activity followed by the reading of a children s book. The parents and children work together on some kind of math activity or project. At the end of the workshop, children generally receive some kind of take-home item so they can continue to think about and do math, even after they get home! Over 24 workshops have been designed and are described in the Getting Started Manual. The manual also provides suggestions and tips for how to run a successful family night, with handouts for parents about using good questions and helping children explore mathematics at home. You may want to spend some time reviewing the Funbooks. Let s Read Funbook A is for primary grades K-2. Let s Read Funbook 1 and Let s Read Funbook 2 are for elementary grades K-4. Let s Read Advanced Funbook 1 is for upper elementary grades on into middle school.
