Really fun read by Dantz, and one that captures Miami's 'vibe' in the late 80s to a tee. Sara Copley recently moved to Miami, in part to find out what happened to her ex-boyfriend. Sara grew up poor and met her beau in high school, but whereas he went into military, she became a medical doctor. Ten years after high school, her beau was discharged (PTSD) and came back to Boston, but after a few months went to Miami to see an army buddy. Sara got some postcards for a bit, then nothing. So, she decides on a career move, leaving the hospital in Boston to work in the Health Department in Miami, which has free clinics and so forth for the poor.

In her quest to find her old beau, she files a missing person report, and the lead detective of missing persons, Lee Valdez, comprises our second protagonist. One day Lee takes Sara to the hospital as a strange new case rolled in; it turns out to be her beau's buddy, but he is in some strange, almost hibernation sleep/coma. Was it some strange designer drug? Alongside this story arc, we are introduced to the mysterious, sociopathic Dr. Vidoc, who is working with 'the colonel', a Cuban exile/patriot who, after having a hand in the Bay of Pigs, now trains revolutionary groups in Latin America among other sundry activities. Dr. Vidoc is up to something with him, using neurotoxins and such to create a new type of revolutionary soldier, but I will say no more to avoid spoilers.

Overall, The Seventh Sleeper is a fast-paced adventure/thriller set in Miami, featuring many nasty Cubanos, Santería priests and such, our plucky Sara, Lee the Cuban-American cop, and even an old Seminole all tied up with Dr. Vidoc's exploits. Dantz does a great job fleshing out the characters, especially Dr. Vidoc, and pacing the story in general. Lots of nostalgia in this one and Miami is a great setting. Not sure why this one has not got a lot of love here on GR, but definitely worth a read if you like thrillers and can find a copy. 4 Santería stars!
