The third installment of the acclaimed SONIC SELECT series brings us more of the best tales from the Sonic Super Specials. It's a massive melee as the Freedom Fighters throw down with the Chaotix for the Sword of Acorns! What mysterious force has turned these friends into foes? And what unspeakable evil stands to benefit?
Sonic and his buds face impossible odds in the post-Robotnik "Brave New World," braving civil war and the rescue of King Acorn from the vile wizard Ixis Naugus! All these stories and more await you in the latest great volume of Sonic Selects!
Sonic Select is a premium selection of past Sonic comic book stories. Choosing from the many miniseries and double-length specials, you can now relive all the Blue Blur's exciting history!
Sonic Select 3 has an eclectic combination of stories that... don't work together well. There's Battle Royale where the Freedom Fighters and Chaotix punch each other a lot (with bad art). Something Mammoth Mogul, something, sword of Acorns. I did not care. Mammoth makes no sense. The Sword is annoying. Why must everyone punch so much?
Then we have Brave New World which I do like, though it could have been SO much better with some simple changes. It covers the first time the Freedom Fighters return to Robotropolis with the intention of making it their home again, and Sonic finds out his parents are alive. Heavy stuff, but the narrative just... doesn't focus enough to make it as powerful as it could be. However, it's still a good comic even if it is quiet. Gives a good perspective on some of the character feelings at the moment.
Then there's Return of the King and bleh. I just really hate all the stories involving the King. He's a douche. Even if a wizard is controlling him. ARG. Just make him go away. Max is needless plot drama. He orders the destruction of the Robians. WTF. But then he stops being weird and green and is now only mostly horrible rather than fully horrible.
The book ends with two old school stories about Bunnie and the Forty Fathom Freedom Fighters. Meh all around.
Meh sums up this book quite well :l It covers a bad era of the plot. Sorry, book 3!
This is quite a mess. It's another book where things just happen and it feels like we're skipping chapters and the battles themselves, which are probably supposed to be the centerpieces of the stories, feel sloppy and staged at the same time.
It doesn't hurt, but it doesn't feel special as the stories are sold as being.
Again the artwork has been taken up a notch with the colouring but there are some funny looking characters but that was part of its charm for me when I was younger. The style looked like anyone who liked Sonic could draw if they tried enough (something I did regularly too). One thing about these books being smaller is the pages have been shrunk (mentioned this already) which has kinda effected the text not being as bold. It's not terrible but it is noticeable. The one thing that is getting on my nerves like when I collected the comics YOU need to have comic/trade because of how they keep making references. Right now I don't own the trades they're referring too and I probably won't own them since I already have the comics. I mostly picked up these Selects to see what I missed out especially when it came to the Sonic Super Specials. Reading this trade bought all the memories back when I first enjoyed the different arcs in Sonic Super Specials. I think I must be missing more of the later ones.
Another bizarre selection of Archie Sonic comics. The focus is largely on the freedom fighters restoring Mobotropolis and its monarchy in the wake of Robotnik’s defeat. This would be fine if the focus was on Sonic, but it isn’t. The main character continues to be Sally Acorn which is at odds with the fact that the comic is called Sonic the Hedgehog. Still an interesting read if you want to see characters overreact to everything and discover long lost family members that add nothing to the overall story except expand an already gargantuan cast of characters.
Well, this is an interesting graphic novel. What I like about it: it appeals to kids, it looks like the video games, it has several smaller "stories," it is has extremely detailed and colorful panels, the story lines are action packed. What I don't like about it: some of the stories are hard to follow (maybe that's just me though), and there are a lot of characters. This is my first Sonic graphic novel though, so I may just need to see how the kids like it...
Ah yes, the "Battle Royale" special...while part of the important "Sword of Acorns" storyline, it's not really the best of brawls for any of the characters. Of note, this is a good collection to pick up, since the Sword of Acorns has resurfaced in some of the recent storylines of the comic book series!
I think that Sally ruined the book and i would of gaved it 5 stars if she wasn't even in the book. I hate her guts cause all she does is stand there and let the bad guys get her..What is her effing problem!?!?!?!
