With an introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Oscar Hijuelos, this important anthology of contemporary fiction represents the wide range of cultures and experiences that mark the diverse ethnic groups of the Latino community.
"Uneven" is a word I often use to describe short story collections, but this one is really quite...even. Masters like José Antonio Villareal and Ed Vega definitely show up for work, and lesser-known writers keep in stride.
I don't think it's necessary to be Latin@ to appreciate this anthology. Perhaps there was a little more representation of Cuban and Puerto Rican voices - I felt the eastward pull more than the pull of Mexico and the U.S. southwest. That said one of the writers is a favorite daughter of my hometown, so, that's cool.
This was a great collection of short stories written by Latino authors. It was a good way for me to see writing styles and select novels written by each author based on that.
A collection of Latin American short stories. I think Latin American literature is not studied enough in schools...or at least I haven't been able to incoporate it as much as I have always wanted. I have read several of the stories. Very good. It is a book I am reading for my creative writing capstone for SMU and will try to reflect some aspect of the various authors' techniques, etc in my own stories.
