The Cambridge Companion to the Victorian Novel
In The Cambridge Companion to the Victorian Novel, a series of specially-commissioned essays examine the work of Charles Dickens, the Brontës, George Eliot and other canonical writers, as well as that of such writers as Olive Schreiner, Wilkie Collins and H. Rider Haggard, whose work has recently attracted new attention from scholars and students. Contributors engage with topics such as industrial culture, religion and science and the broader issues of the politics of gender, sexuality and race. The Companion includes a chronology and a comprehensive Guide to Further Reading.

2020 Review = offers a comprehensive and complete overview of literary criticism of the Victorian novel; chapters on gender, race, sexuality, sensationalisation, detective fiction etc; I would highly recommend for English Literature students just wanting a taster of the period. There isn't that much depth to the articles (as I said, they're more overviews than anything) but it's a good starting point for research. Accessible.
2017 Review = Interesting and detailed introduction to reading the Victorian novel; however, it does assume that you are already familiar with a lot of literature from this period. I recommend this to all who love the Victorian period because it is very much contextualised -- in a few of the essays, it was actually more history than English literature. Very interesting though.

Der “Camebridge Companion to the Victorian Novel“ ist eine Sammlung aus Essays zu unterschiedlichen Themen, weniger eine wirkliche Einfürhung in die Victorian Novel. Die basics gibt es teilweise auch schon, aber ohne solide Grundkenntnisse wird man mit diesem Buch nicht glücklich werden.

“Between 1829 and 1852 5h343 had been an attempt by the publishers to stabilize retail prices and stop large-scale discounting. In 1852 this practice was declared to be illegall…” – still sounds kind of familiar today.
Eines der interessantesten Kapitel des Buches. Es gab deutlich mehr als Mudie’s und three-decker. Die Methoden der Verleger haben sich auch nicht wirklich verbessert seit damals. Vieles kommt einem bekannt vor aus der heutigen Zeit.
3 - The aesthetics of the Victorian novel: form, subjectivity, ideology pp 61-76 By Linda M. Shires
Romantischer Individualismus gegen Gesellschaft und Ideologie ist das Hauptthema des Kapitels. Letztendlich werden verschiedene Klassiker diesbezüglich miteinander verglichen. Wenn man die Bücher nicht kennt, ist das Kapitel für die Katz‘.
4 - Industrial culture and the Victorian novel pp 77-96 By Joseph W. Childers
Diverse bekannte industrial novels werden verglichen. Man sollte sie kennen, sonst bringt das Kapitel eher wenig.
5 - Gender and the Victorian novel pp 97-124 By Nancy Armstrong
Dieses Kapitel beginnt mit der damals verbreiteten Theorie
Heterosexual desire caused overpopulation => source of war and misery => control desire => control the female body.
Poverty caused by promiscuity of women. => sexual desire rather than unregulated economy brought about misery.
The victor in economic competition = fittest for social domination
Kommt bekannt vor. Ist in Deutschland gerade wieder verbreitete Meinung. Viele Kinder = Arms = selber schuld, soll die Frau weniger Kinder bekommen… Reich = war seines Glückes Schmied = zu Recht reich. Arm = selber schuld. Interessanterweise verurteilen wir das im viktorianischen England finden es in der Hartz IV Debatte wiederum akzeptabel.
Bis hier hin ist das Kapitel auch wirklich gut. Dann wird es aber immer esoterischer. Es geht darum, wie das durch die Ökonomie erzwungene Verhalten der Männer, diese für Frauen unangenehm macht, andererseits die Wahl des richtigen Mannes über das Schicksal der Frau und auch über das Schicksal der Nation entscheidet. Verschiedenste Ideen gehen ineinander über, das liest sie zwar gut, aber zum Schluss kann man nicht mehr wirklich sagen, was der Autor einem damit sagen wollte. Irgendwie fehlt der rote Faden.

“The spirit of alienation expands beyond the zone of labour.”
“…whether sexual passion is defined by its distance from the economic interests at the heart of the capitalist system or by its closeness to them, the specter of market society everywhere haunts the scenes of desire that everywhere haunt the Victorian novel.”
“….The category of class masochism in Our Mutual Friend is a species of males sexuality.”
Diese drei Zitate zeigen was für ein Stil dieses Kapitel hat. Obscures Geschwurbel, das gut klingt und wenig sagt.
Kann man lesen, ist aber ziemliche Zeitverschwendung, würde ich sagen. Eines der schlimmeren Kapitel des Buches.
7 - Race and the Victorian novel pp 149-168 By Patrick Brantlinger
Racial stereotypes in Victorian Novel mit einigen bekannten Beispielen. Bestimmte Rassen stehen für bestimmte Eigenschaften, weiß gegen schwarz, schwarze können kein Gentleman sein, Frau sein als Sklaverei. Nichts Weltbewegendes, nichts Neues, das Übliche und genau das, was man anhand des Titels des Kapitels erwartet + Anti Slavery Novels wie „Uncle Tom’s Cabin“.
8 - Detection in the Victorian novel pp 169-191 By Ronald R. Thomas
“Almost every Victorian novel has at its heart some crime that must be uncovered…”
Corrective countergenre to the biographical novel and Newgate novel as it imposes restrictions on the autonomy of the self.
Dieses Kapitel listet auch ein paar unbekanntere frühe Detective Novels neben Sherlock Holmes und gibt einen kurzen Abriss über die historische Entwicklung der Polizeiarbeit, wie Bertillon’s portrait parlé und wie Sherlock Holmes die Polizeiarbeit in Frankreich inspirierte.
9 - Sensation and the fantastic in the Victorian novel pp 192-211 By Lyn Pykett
Ghost Stories and Gothic Literature. Fantasy als Gegenbewegung zur rationellen Wissenschaft. Victorian Gothic wird um 1897 zu Victorian SF (HG Wells – War of the Worlds)
Es werden viele Romane gelistet, die eher unbekannt sind. Nette Inspiration, wenn man dieses Genre mag.
10 - Intellectual debate in the Victorian novel: religion, science, and the professional pp 212-233 By John Kucich
Mir zu viel philosophisches Geschwurbel. Nichts wirklich Neues und irgendwie weiß man nach dem Lesen des Kapitels nicht wirklich, was der Autor einem sagen wollte.
11 - Dickens, Melville, and a tale of two countries pp 234-254 By Robert Weisbuch
Hier werden Bücher von Dickens, Melville und Hawthorne verglichen und darauf eingegangen, wie sie sich gegenseitig zitierten und dissten. Wenn man die beschriebenen Bücher nicht gelesen hat, kann man mit den Kapitel nichts anfangen. Des Weiteren geht es um Unterschiede US/UK Literatur in der victorianischen Ära. Für dieses Kapitel braucht man deutlich mehr als nur solide Grundkenntnisse.
Fazit: Dieses Buch ist eine Sammlung teils durchwachsener einzelner Artikel zu unterschiedlichen Themen. Nicht wirklich ein interessantes Buch, wenn man sich für viktorianische Romane generell interessiert. Hier geht es in teils hochschwurbeligem Geisteswissenschaftlerenglisch um Selbstdarstellung und das widerholte Durchkauen ähnlicher und sich überschneidender Themenbereiche. Wenn man das Buch von Anfang bis Ende durchliest hat man ab der Mitte das Gefühl dass sich die Themen wiederholen und wiederholen. Das ist kein Buch für interessierte Laien. Ohne Grundkenntnisse und Kenntnisse der gängigen Klassiker und gängiger Theorien der Kulturstudien kann man mit diesem Buch herzlich wenig anfangen.
Nützlich für Hausarbeiten, wenn man bestimmte Kapitel braucht. Definitiv kein Buch, das in das Thema einführt, hier wird ordentlich vertieft.

I was mostly interested in the sections on “The Victorian novel and its readers” (by Kate Flint) and “The business of Victorian publishing” (by Simon Eliot).
Tidbits of interest:
Most Victorian novels (i.e., published during the reign of Queen Victoria [1837-1901], or, more generally, in the 19th century) were published in three parts and were popularly called “three-deckers.” Many novels, in particular those of Charles Dickens, were initially distributed as monthly or other periodic installments in popular publications or in cheap broadsides.
Here’s a surprising insight into the nature of literacy in the 19th century in Britain:
“Until the late nineteenth century reading and writing were two distinct skills and were treated as such. Reading was taught first, and then writing. If you came from a low-income family, it might be able to afford to send you to school to learn to read, but could probably not afford to keep you there for another year or two to learn to write. By that time you would be old enough to work to supplement the family’s income.”
(pp. 42-43)
By the way, Frankenstein and Dracula are Victorian novels. The books are a lot different from the movies you’ve probably seen.

A full review will be forthcoming on my blog soon, but, in brief, I will say that this compilation of essays was fantastic for the most part. I feel that the editor / compiler did a fantastic job of including essays that give a more holistic overview of Victorian society from a variety of lenses. While not every chapter was a shining star, this book, as a whole, is a fantastic resource for those interested in Victorian literature.

This book helps put the classic novels written in the Victorian era in context of the times: societal developments, scientific discoveries, industrial development and London's expansion.
