Dane has always considered himself to be a ladies’ man. Not a playboy though. He’s always thought of women as gods gift to the universe and he wants to find that one true love so desperately. And he knows that he won’t find it on this planet. So, when two ambassadors from a nearby planet come looking to secure military support against their enemy the Ellowans, Dane jumps at the opportunity to venture out into space.
Aiyana has a secret. She is not in fact an amphibious creature joined with the Tsier and wanting to end all Ellowans…she herself IS and Ellowan. One of the last remaining of her species who was spared the holocaust of her people all those years ago. And since then, she has plotted revenge against the Tsier for their war crimes. Once a peaceful people, Ellowans was pushed to violence, but it’s entirely justified. If only the Candor people will listen instead of siding with the Tsier. So that’s why she’s deceived Dane and, upon revealing herself, kidnaps him.
Dane is instantly in love with the extremely frustrating but alluring woman. Despite her many many betrayals, despite her habit of speaking in riddles and despite all her baggage, Dane is a lost soul when it comes to Aiyana. But as their story is told, Dane soon realizes that Aiyana is far more than he ever imagined. A leader to her people, a woman strong in the face of family and culture, and a woman capable of such love.
Going from the previous book I read where nothing at all of consequence happened to reading this, it was a big shock. A lot happens in this book, and, in the tradition of science fiction/futuristic romance, it wasn’t until ¾ of the way through the book before I 100% grasped what the hell was going on! There’s a theme of first nation peoples being robbed of their homeland and culture throughout the book, that was the prevailing subject, but I enjoyed the characters’ love story as well.
Dane was a fantastic character. He was so much more than what I first thought him to be, which was rake. But he was romantic and he was extremely intelligent and levelheaded. He was also the stand in for the reader as he too constantly would state he had no idea what was going on or what people were saying. It was very funny. Aiyana was a fighter through and through and fiercely loyal to those who deserve it.
