Tithing

Rate this book
R.T. Kendall believes that all Christians are called to tithe. What is more, he is convinced that the church would be revitalized and the world transformed if all Christians did begin to tithe. Dr. Kendall combines this bold claim with the biblical, theological, and practical implications of tithing. Tithing is sometimes regarded as threatening, but it emerges in this book as both challenging and inspiring. Numerous exciting testimonies are told, all demonstrating in individual lives the principle that underlies tithing. "You cannot outgive the Lord."

Great little book that is easily digestible and packs a punch. Kendall separates the book into chapters and smaller sections within the chapters, making it very easy to read.

I liked his breakdown of things under the law vs. faith. He addresses the claim that Old Testament = Law. Hebrews tells us that men like Abel, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph did what they did by faith before the law came. And men like Moses, Joshua, Gideon, Samuel, and David did what they did by faith after the law came. Not tithing because of the place of God's law in the Bible is a misunderstanding.

The chapter on the law and being free from the law and Abraham tithing was very interesting. Kendall sums that section up by talking about how tithing was practiced by Abraham before the law, but the law of Moses made tithing "legal," and that is a fairly strong hint of how seriously God takes tithing. It is mentioned right along with not murdering or committing adultery.

He says this in his chapter of "Why Should Christians Tithe:" "Whatever else may be learned from the story of Abraham and Isaac this much is clear: God blesses obedience. We literally cannot outdo the Lord. He waits to bless us. He wants to bless us far more than we want that blessing. But He waits to see whether we take Him seriously."

Another interesting takeaway was Kendall's mention that the only place the Bible asks us to "prove God" is with tithing in Malachi. "Prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you that windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it."

I see there is a new edition of this, but from my 1982 edition his breakdown of legalism might confuse younger Christians who aren't familiar with no movie theaters, not buying things on Sunday, etc.

A good resource on the importance of tithing and a helpful book on giving some biblical reasons why.
It is a little older now, but still is a resource I would give to people who were serious about Bible Study and the Practice of stewarding what God has entrusted to us. No punches pulled.
