Poppy Smith feels stuck. After watching her best friend fall in love with the help of a little magic spell, Poppy decides to try one for herself. Maybe then she will be able to finally start living the life she has always dreamed of instead of feeling stuck helping her family run their orchard business. When a broadway star shows up she thinks her spell might just be working, but there is more to magic than meets the eye. The love story she has been yearning for may take an unexpected turn.
Josh Turner is the soul of the wonderful little town of Mystic Falls. If you ever need help, just call Josh and he's there with a smile. There is more to the happy-go-lucky guy than most people are aware of. Tragedy found him young and he has spend most of his life dreaming of finding a family and a place to belong. He has also spent most of his life in love with Poppy Smith, even though he never dreamed he would have a chance with her. But change is in the air in Mystic Falls and that might be just was Josh has been hoping for.
Listen, I wanted to love this. The cover was cute, the vibes seemed sweet, and I was in the mood for a charming small town. I think there’s definitely an audience for this, but unfortunately I’m just not it. I think if this was an audiobook, I could’ve avoided a lot of issues, as most I had were with the writing itself.
Sometimes the writing just really doesn’t work for me and that was definitely the case here. It wasn’t necessarily even a style issue, just technical ones. A round of line edits could work wonder on this book. The prose was incredibly repetitive and stilted, and the dialogue felt unnatural at times.
For example, this sentence should be hot, but I could only focus on how unnatural it sounded: "I wanna make you come right here, princess. Will you let me give you pleasure until you scream, and you remember exactly who made you scream?" or “He licked down and shoved his tongue inside of her and fucked her with his tongue.” I understand his tongue is involved thank you. Maybe repetition is a pet peeve because boy was I aggravated.*
The book felt like it should’ve been over at 60% and the relationship was boring. It was friends to lovers but oddly paced with little connection for two characters who knew each other. Also Josh was like hey let’s go on a picnic and Poppy was like what do I wear I need to be prepared. He was like oh just light walking so nothing major and then MAKES HER CLIMB UP A ROCK. She had to step on a BRANCH because it was so big. Sorry but no I’d have refused lmao.
This is entirely a personal preference, but I don’t like either main character to get with another character after both characters have met on the page and they’re clearly the MCs. This goes for any main character, across all genres. Poppy and Josh were starring in the play together and were cute, and then Damian rolled into town and she hooked up with him for his entire duration. Josh also walked in on them and I really disliked that experience.
I just wish their ill-fated fling would’ve happened right before the story started. Again, totally a personal preference and I’m not saying I don’t want grown adults to have sex with whomever they chose, I just didn’t like the when of it.
As soon as Damian entered the picture and she was like wow! my soulmate, I lost interest. I get that book one was magical and time travel but it didn’t work for this book and felt childish. Especially at the end like please it was so corny 😭 Also she wanted love SO badly and even took a LOVE POTION but then was like wow I’m having feelings for Josh so let me just run from them real quick?? It was odd. And then they got together at 60% and nothing important happened after.
The second half of the epilogue was cute, but I wasn’t invested in the relationship so I didn’t really care. He also called her princess but it was ALL the time. Again, the writing was super repetitive. There was a nice good girl. The mechanical bull was fun, but I don’t buy that it was the FIRST time Poppy had heard of Josh riding it. They’re in the same town??? But I’m definitely craving apple cider now so there’s that.
⭐️⭐️.25/5 🌶️🌶️🌶️°/5
°There were a few scenes and he was dominant, but it didn’t really fit with his character or his inner thoughts and the scenes were short. Also it opened the door for some scenes and then closed it on others that seemed interesting
*This is an eARC, so if either of these two sentences are resolved upon publication (tomorrow), you can let me know. This happened throughout the entire book, however, and I just think that’s how it’s gonna be.
The eARC was kindly provided by the author. All opinions are honest and my own.
much much better than the first book and you can really see the author’s growth between the first two books. she put more details and organization into this one rather than the first book, and therefore deserves that extra .5 rating. it still isn’t perfect, and the concepts of each book are basically the exact same, but i do enjoy them and i love love love the fat rep.
I was so excited for SPOTLIGHT ON POPPY because I love a fat heroine and this book cover is GORGEOUS.
Sadly, I couldn't continue reading this book past the first few chapters because the editing was non-existent and the writing itself needs work.
I was gifted an ARC of this book, so I went and downloaded the sample chapters from Amazon in case my ARC copy wasn't the final edited version. All the same errors, typos, terrible punctuation, and poor grammar are also in the finished copy.
Typos aside, the writing is very clunky and repetitive. Within two adjacent paragraphs (in chapter 1) the word BEAUTIFUL was used 4 times. FOUR. TIMES.
SPOTLIGHT ON POPPY is written in 3rd person and the author says the main characters' names rough 8 gazillion times per chapter.
Here's an example paragraph from chapter 1: Poppy had to wipe a tear from her own eye. That is what love looked like, and that is what Poppy wanted more than anything. Poppy kept her eyes peeled during the ceremony for the woman who gave Hannah her love spell. If she came, Poppy was going to ask for a spell of her own.
This author needs a bit more time to hone her craft and she absolutely needs a good editor.
I had mixed feelings about the second book in the Mystic Falls series. I loved the characters and that we got to see more from Hannah, Graham and Bridget but I felt like there could have been another round of editing done (there were a lot of clunky sentences). I also felt a little torn on Poppy and Josh going from zero to 100 so soon after she ends a spur of the moment relationship with a big city scum bag.
That said the small town, Gilmore Girls vibes of this series is excellent and I truly did love Poppy's journey from wanting to make it big in the city to discovering a new dream for herself working with her brother and living in the town she always thought she wanted to leave.
Other positives: another amazing Leni Kaufman cover, great fat rep and some STEAMY bull riding scenes I didn't know I needed in my life! Many thanks to the author for sharing an early ARC copy in exchange for my honest review! Recommended for fans of Mixed signals by B.K. Borison.
Poppy has a big personality, part of theatre and wants out of Mystic Falls. Poppy also wants to be in love like her best friend, Hannah (from book 1) and so she contacts the same witch to help her with a love spell. Josh is Poppy's friend and he has a rough background with his family but the town sort of took him and his sister under their wings and Josh thinks that he owes the town back and is sort of the town helper. I loved the humor, small town antics and build to the relationship.
And do not be fooled Josh is a cinnamon roll character in public but not behind closed doors!
I was kindly gifted an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Unfortunately I did DNF this book at 27%.
I liked the premise, I really did! But I couldn’t get past the characters and the flat interactions.
Poppy was becoming increasingly petulant and irritating, I loved her at the start, she was a confident strong woman. But then she started to slip into a naive idiot , I really couldn’t stand her or anything she said which makes it difficult when she’s one half of the main love interest!
With Josh it was almost the opposite, I didn’t like him at first but he did seem to become more likeable as the book went on.
I didn’t like the building relationships at all, they felt like they were coming out of nowhere and were really sudden.
I hate to DNF a book, especially when I have been asked to review one, but it got to the point where I felt I was forcing myself to keep reading just to finish it.
I will start out by saying, I absolutely adore books that give good body representations in a positive manner. You will instantly earn 1 star that way.
Now it’s time to get into the guts of this book. There are a lot of reasons why I am giving this book only 2 stars. The biggest thing for me is that this book reminded me of one of those super cheesy, small town hallmark movies. Poppy comes off as this slightly self-centered, flighty, person with a one track mind.
During her best friend’s wedding, where she is the maid of honor, she is more concerned about Bridget & getting a spell so she can find love. This friend ship between Hannah & Poppy feels generic because nothing of depth was said to show they have been friends for years was really stated during the maid of honor speech. Also, when they have their check in with each other when Hannah is back from Scotland, the interaction was SUPER one sided.
After Damien St. Cloud (….?) disappears after using Poppy as a hook up, it is revealed that Josh actually hit him and made him leave. Poppy was described as this larger than life, I can stand my own ground person. I would have been upset if someone fought my battles where it should have been me. Whereas Poppy was totally okay with it…
I mean…there is a lot I didn’t like about this book. To me, the dialogue fell flat, the characters had very cliche personalities, the small towns people felt like it was the same view repeated twenty different ways. This book was super predictable. How is it, that it’s a small town, but she didn’t know Josh’s story, and didn’t know some of the teachers? Wouldn’t those teachers be known? Especially since it was heavily implied/shown that everyone knows everyone.
Josh has this golden retriever personality. I really was bored with how much he repeated the same things over and over. The only things I did like was the fact he was a jack of all trades and that he had anxiety. I liked the anxiety because it gave his character flaws.
Now, we come to the reason why this book gets a second star. I thought the spice was at least decent. I liked that Josh dropped the good ol’ boy persona and was slightly dominant. I liked that he enjoyed getting Poppy off.
I think this book has a lot of potential. I think, with the right editor or beta’s, this book could have met it’s full potential.
This was given to me as an eArc. All my reviews are my own.

Poppy and Josh are amazing characters. Poppy knows what she wants and is really ambitious. She is a heartwarming person and Josh is absolutely perfect for her. He is the golden retriever type of man and I would definitely fall for him too! He is the soul of Mystic Falls and selfless - but he is also reflected and honest. They are both true to themselves and to each other - with that, there wasn't this dramatic fight and break-up we know from almost every famous romance book. I loved it!! 💕
This book is perfect for everyone who is looking for a cozy small-town romance with plus size representation 😍 5 ⭐️
This was sooooo good :’) The writing can always be tightened and I think the author’s style and voice will keep getting better with each of her books. The characters are just so IMPORTANT AND SPECIAL TO ME NO ONE LOOK AT ME CRY OVER JOSH AND POPPY’S HAPPINESS.
ARC Review!! I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I wanted to badly to love this book. The cover is adorable, there's a plus size main character, and the premise sounded promising. However, this book fell so flat for me.
From choppy descriptions to repetitive dialog, it was so hard to really get into this book. Everything the characters said was a repeat of the narration that the author just gave us. It was all so stiff. And even then, the descriptions and narration of the story were so formal. It really took me out of the story. There were multiple grammatical errors that I noticed. It was difficult to believe that any of these characters were actually doing anything. It was a lot of telling us that they were doing things and not showing us.
I saw someone else's review, I think for Hannah's book, that a lot of the events that were built up as these huge plot points were just barely talked about when the time actually came. The third act conflict in this book was hyped up to be this huge beast of a problem that they would have to solve, only for it to miraculously work out in about two sentences. It was jarring.
On to positive things! I will say I did not read the first book in this series, but I didn't feel like I was missing any context, so that's a plus.
I liked most of the characters, even when I feel like we barely know anything about them.
Overall, this book just wasn't for me. It had a lot of potential, but just seemed like it missed the mark.

I adore Mary Warren books because the writing and the settings are like a warm hug. It’s all the things that are familiar and adored by the nostalgic me. Poppy’s book is like a sexy hallmark movie with a plus size FMC. It’s cool to also read these books as she publishes them and see the evolution of her writing style and skill continue to grow.
This book did something for my soul. Josh has been in love with Poppy since the 4th grade but doesn’t think she likes him. Poppy finds Josh to be a constant in life but has never thought of him romantically because he dated her best friend Hannah. When Hannah gets married she is a bit jealous and wants to find her happy ending. She ends up meeting the witch that sold her friend Hannah her love potion at their wedding and asks for one. She does the potion and the next day a broadway star takes over the music direction of their local theater production of Little Shop of Horrors. Poppy is Audrey and Josh plays Seymour. She instantly thinks that Damien must be her soulmate but in reality, he’s a total fuck boy. Josh recognizes his facade immediately and dislikes him. Slowly but surely Poppy realizes this and that she has feelings for Josh. Once they get together it’s with fervor and it’s immensely spicy but tender as well. There’s something so special about their longstanding relationship and shared heartbreaks that touched my heart. Both Poppy and Josh lost their mothers the same year. Poppy had her dad and family to support her, while Josh did not it’s just been him and his sister most of his life. Due to that, Josh has always wanted a family and has a lot of abandonment issues that come to the surface over a few interactions. Josh gets anxiety and panic attacks and normally the only one that can bring him down is his sister, but during this one Poppy brings him back to reality and it’s such a sweet moment between the two. I have so much I want to say about the book, but I don’t want to spoil anything. Just know it’s a beautiful, spicy, friends-to-lovers tale, full of laughter, tears, and realizations. It’s one of the best books I’ve read in the past year and I highly recommend checking it out when it comes out next month.
Sometimes I can tell that I’m going to love a book by the end of the first chapter and this was definitely one of those books.
Josh and Poppy’s story is so sweet. At the beginning of the book Poppy sees what everybody around her has, with their great love stories and she really wants one of her own. So naturally she gets a love potion from a witch because it worked out really well for her best friend. After a little hiccup in the road in the form of Damien St. Cloud, she realizes that she has feelings for Josh. Sweet, lovable, hardworking Josh who has literally always been right in front of her. The same Josh who absolutely adores her and has for years.
I loved watching their journey throughout the book and of course loved the fat representation. I’m also making mental notes of that mechanical bull scene, for science.
Thank you to the author for sending me an eARC. This is my honest review.
I really loved this book. The truth I haven’t read many small town romances but this one was beautiful. The mcs were amazing, I can’t even begin to explain how happy it made me to read about a fat mc founding love and having a happy ever after. Poppy is a very likeable mc, with her dreams and insecurities and the expectations of what the future holds for her. Josh is honestly boyfriend material , he is sensitive ,loyal and (drums please!!) he cooks which if you know me is a huge plus in a person, he is literally the personification of a golden retriever but not where it matters😏. They both had very difficult pasts but I love how they were always there for each other. The friends to lovers trope was amazingly done here. I really loved the dates especially the picnic one! And of course Bridget’s involvement in this story! I also really want to read the prequel to this story, Hannah’s and Graham’s story and the funny thing is that I started Outlander some days ago so a Highlander romance is just what the doctor ordered!
Wow. I absolutely adored this book. It was so cute and just gave me all the happy feelings.... along with the spicy feelings ...
Poppy has always lived in the small town of Mystic Falls and she wants more. She wants the big lights in the city. Or is that actually what she needs?
I loved Poppy, she was real, she made mistakes, she thought stupid thoughts. But that made me connect with her even more. I loved her adventure and her abrupt welcome to reality.
Josh was just exactly what you wanted for Poppy. He's exactly what she needed when she least expected it.
I cannot wait for more from this author. Definitely an auto-buy for me now.

First of all thank you to Mary Warren for the ARC of this book. Secondly this is now one of my favourite series ever I love everything about it the characters and mystic falls as a place hope there is more to come in this series.
This book is about poppy and josh who have been friends since childhood. Poppy has dreams of seeing her name in lights and josh wants to help everyone who has helped him in their hometown of mystic falls , but when real life magic intervenes and sets them on a path to each other and life full of love and happiness.
I'm such a sucker for a small town guy who's had a crush on a girl since they were kids. It doesn't hurt that Josh is such a sweetie with a bit of a hot streak. 😏 As usual, the fat rep is incredible. Mary always kills it with fat representation so I wasn't worried.
Thank you so much to the author for sending me an ebook arc of this book for review. All thoughts are my own. 🖤
A huge thanks for Mary allowing me to have an ARC of Poppy’s story! This book was a super sweet & quick read. Just like Hannah’s story, the fat representation was 🙌🏼!
The end was an absolutely perfect way to wrap up Hannah and Poppy’s love stories!
I ADORED THIS BOOK. I love seeing more plus size representation in books and the fact that Poppy wasn’t consistently hating on her body! And she has an amazing love interest who just loves her!
Thank god for Booktok. Great to read plus size girlie representation. Super grateful for the trigger warnings at the beginning, please read them. This is an ultimate friends to lovers story. My weakness. Enjoyed that even though Poppy and Josh have know each other their whole lives, their budding romance brought out a side of them that they never knew. MDom energy was hot! Story was well written and all the other characters also had depth. This can be read as a stand alone.
that is NAWT how people talk omg… i feel like this was the first draft the author drunkenly wrote as a fourteen year old girl and accidentally found its way to her agent and then by a series of grotesque mistakes made it’s way to the printers… i will never trust a pretty cover again
Thank you Mary Warren for trusting me w/ an ARC of your latest creation. NOTE:I have never read the first book in the Mystic Falls series, this is the first thing I’ve read of Mary Warren. This story was absolutely ADORABLE! Josh Turner is a clear contender for BOOK BF 2023! He was sweet, attentive & get this…EMOTIONALLY AVAILABLE & COMMUNICATED! Gotta love fiction! Josh definitely HIT ALL the boxes on the BF Chart for me. As a hustla myself, I respect his hustle but also I LOVED his heart. Poppy Smith is a complicated subject for me. I even had to have a discussion about this character with my bestie over Margaritas. When I started the book, I COULD NOT STAND POPPY! I thought at one point I wouldn’t finish this book because she had my blood pressure rising. I don’t wanna give any spoilers, but Poppy had me feeling some type of way. (My book journal is not very kind to Poppy in the beginning.) Then Poppy had her AH HA moment. The light bulb went on in her head and that's when it happened yall. MY light bulb went on too! It clicked why Poppy annoyed me so damn much. Poppy…was 20 yr old me. A person who annoys the f*ck outta me (THANK YOU GROWTH!) I was sadly taking my personal issues on Poppy. Bendito, I’m so sorry Poppy! By mid story Poppy grew on me and I realized she and I had SO much in common. Now, Poppy Smith is a kindred spirit. Love her and am so happy for how her story ended. The story was cute, I love a small town setting, and "He Fell First” is my dream. The supporting characters were interesting & I love the part they all play in Poppy & Josh’s lives. The best constructive criticism I can give however, is maybe a re edit. There were a few times where there were words missing or the wrong word. I know it’s an ARC so I’m hopeful those will be corrected by the release date (3/14/23). I could have finished this book much sooner, but I had to stop reading a few times & take a break because the flow wasn’t there. In one paragraph 6 out of 7 sentences started with HE. It was stressful for me. More like a to do list than a story. Overall, I would ABSOLUTELY recommend this book, its a quick cute romance with a plus sized FMC, a lil bit o’magic & a dash of spice (safe for public consumption. Except maybe in a place of worship.) You won’t regret reading it.
Thank you again to Mary Warren for the ARC & I will be going back to read Mystic Falls #1 later this year.
(Received this as an ARC, officially comes out March 14, 2023!)
This cute romance surprised me y’all!
I’m not gonna lie, for the majority of the first half of the book I was really frustrated with Poppy. It didn’t feel so realistic for a 28 year old to be so naive or oblivious to things. I’m into the whole soulmate/magical element of love, but she dove into Damien too ignorantly. It didn’t seem like she truly sat with her grown thoughts about how she needed to take a step back to look at her whole situation with him.
I really did enjoy Poppy and Josh’s relationship the second half of this book. It felt deeper and more emotional and less high school, if that makes sense. I really appreciated the emotional moments both had in their relationship. The adult conversations and worries, were all things I think we can relate to. Being able to learn about Josh’s stressors and triggers and how he tries to regulate himself, made me adore him. This man has gone to therapy y’all!
In the beginning we were introduced to a lot of characters at once it felt a little confusing. Later on, I fell in love with all of those side character, so I wish they were introduced a little slower, so we could warm up to them. I also think it’s important for a narrator to let us see what they see instead of telling us what to see.
*semi-spoiler*
For example: as Josh goes looking for his sister after the show, he bumps into a couple of people who come talk to him, this was an indirect way of showing us how loved and connected he is to the town. I would have loved a little bit more of this when characters were were initially being introduced.
*spoiler over*
Was this book a little rough around the edges? Yes. Did I enjoy it nonetheless? Yes!
I felt myself wanting to see where Poppy’s love life was going. This story felt cozy and comfortable! Also, Poppy being fat was not made into this center piece for the story, this was just a nice romance with a fat woman as the main love interest, I LOVE THAT! It made being fat and in love feel normal and not like some big thing we have to be sorry for or defend.
The spice in this book was nice too 😏 • • • [Even though this was given as a free ARC, I will always be as honest as possible. I want nothing more than to support author’s new releases. I am grateful for the chance to be given an ARC. I will never post a good/bad review of an ARC if I have not read it myself]
I was very excited for this arc and massive thanks to Mary! The cover is so freaking cute and I adore any book with great plus size character rep. I knew this one was going to be an enjoyable one from the start with Poppy’s character.
Poppy feels like her life is going nowhere. She’s in her hometown working on her family orchard, but she has dreams of love and adventure. After receiving a love spell from a lady at the Ren Faire, she takes it and expects it to magically uncover her soulmate like it did for her best friend Hannah. But no two love stories are ever the same. Enter Damien St Cloud, hotshot Broadway star from NY and Poppy thinks this must be what is meant for her. Slowly she learns that sometimes what you are looking for was right in front of you all along.
Poppy is quite frustrated with her life and while she is a vibrant, confident woman, she just wants more. She’s having trouble settling on what exactly she wants. I really enjoyed Poppy’s character. I feel like many people can relate to her wanting something so badly, she makes it happen, even if it’s not right. But when it is right, everything is different.
I may enjoy my alphaholes, but I do still love a golden retriever man. Josh is described as a “golden retriever personified” and he is a very happy go lucky guy…who happens to have been in love with Poppy since he was a kid. He’s a literal sweetheart and every time he’d see Poppy with Damien, my heart broke for him. He always has a happy face, but I also love that he allowed himself to be vulnerable with Poppy. Josh gives us the best of all worlds, especially when that dominate side comes out in the bedroom…and boy he certainly has a dirty mouth. And that mechanical bull…that is all.
If you love small towns that feel like you could walk down the streets, lovable characters, and just a tiny bit of magic…look no further. This story has a good bit of emotion, spicy moments, and laughs.
This was a solid read, but a bit of a let down in comparison to “A Highlander for Hannah”, which I absolutely loved. Warren has great writing, and is super funny and relatable. I absolutely loved that there’s this little nod to the show Friends (from a popular Tiktok trend) at the beginning of the novel: “Poppy was happy for her best friend. Yes, Happy and not at all jealous.” Of the bat, this novel has me gripped and laughing. With the exception of my personal icks (I fucking hate when men call women ‘Princess’) my only hang up with this the absence of certain scenes.
For instance, we know that Poppy and Josh are in a play together where the two kiss, but in the novel we are never given a glimpse of Poppy and Joshes feelings when they share the stage kiss. I really feel like people who have feelings for each other would feel a spark or even have emotions even from something like a stage kiss. So that kind of bothered me that it wasn’t really addressed. Another example would be when Josh fights that guy from Broadway. We get a quick summary of the moment Josh punches him after the fact. We don’t get a real glimpse at what happened, what exactly was said and what brought that douchebag and Josh together to even have that interaction.
I know it seems like this is a negative review for something I gave 4-stars too, but it is because I know this is a novel many people will enjoy, and preventing people from picking up this book because of my own personal icks, that likely wouldn’t bother anyone else, seems like too much of a shame. The writing is good, the characters are believable and relatable. I love the closeness of the town, and the logistics of Poppy having to deal with a lot of her feelings on her own (Hannah is on her honeymoon!!).
Great book for someone ready for a touch of magic in their romance, some wonderful plus-size representation and all-in-all good fun.

This book was given to me as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
After watching her best friend fall in love and get married Poppy also wants that magic and seeks it in the form of a magic potion. The fortune teller that Poppy gets the love potion from also tells her to 'follow her heart' which has significance throughout the book and I felt was an underlying theme.
I would describe this as a small town romance, childhood friends to lovers, slight glimpses into a soft Dom, strong plus size FMC and golden retriever energy MMC.
It was a dual POV which of course I love, I really enjoy reading how the MMC falls in love and feels about the FMC. It also adds to the story by gaining both POVs as well as pushing the character development.
The story was such an easy read for me with loveable characters, so much romance, fluff and some spicy scenes.
The spice was a nice read and explored Josh having a soft dominant side, which was enjoyable to read. Although my only gripe was, it was mentioned a few times about punishment and spanking but not a lot of this was explored. I would have liked to have seen more of it.
Not only did I enjoy the romance and falling in love but I liked the 'follow your heart' sentiment, where you and your heart truly know what you want, you just need to open your eyes/ears and listen to it.
Towards the end of the book we got some time skips, one year later which was nice to see what that short period of time had entailed for our couple. Then one which was 25years, this one had me running for the tissues. The MMC had a difficult childhood so for him to finally be in a position that he craved growing up and then achieving this was heart warming.
I've loved both books so far and look forward to the next installment. As the story progresses I feel the next book maybe center around Josh's sister Lexi. But I can't wait to find out!

Thank you @fatgirlsinfiction for an early copy of Spotlight on Poppy. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. 🤍
Spotlight on Poppy is a romance novel about Poppy and Josh; both living in a small town called Mystic Falls, and having known each other since they were children. Poppy, who has watched her best friend fall in love with the help of magic and wants to feel loved and be loved, wanted to try some magic for herself as well. She’s tired of running their family’s orchard business and wants the city life and hopes someone would sweep her off her feet and get her out of the small town. Josh, meanwhile, is the all-around go-to guy in town. He’s been dreaming of finding a family and a place to belong. He’s also been in love with Poppy ever since they were young. Would Poppy give Josh a chance?
While I loved the concept and the fat girl representation in this novel, the storytelling, narration, and conversations honestly felt flat and too formal. I didn’t feel strongly positive about the characters, especially Poppy – I liked her initially, she seemed like someone who would reach for her dreams without depending on anyone or anything, but sadly that didn’t seem to be the case as she somehow depended on the magic handed to her to find her true love. She also seemed relatively immature and naïve for someone her age. I wanted to nudge her strongly because – how could she not see that the man for her was Josh? He’s been with her all her life, and she couldn’t see him which was honestly frustrating. I did enjoy reading Josh’s POV though, he seems quite the opposite of Poppy’s personality, he’s independent and capable.
This book was just so fun to read, and I loved it! After reading Highlander for Hannah, I couldn't wait to read this one. This series is just the perfect quick read. I couldn't put it down and didn't want to!
Mystic Falls being the backdrop of this book made me so excited!! I am a big fan of Vampire Diaries though this book is a little less dramatic it made me so so happy. This book just brings in the perfect hint of magic, mystery, and the belief of fate.
Poppy is such a fun character who you can't help but love automatically. She is this bubbly, beautiful hopeless romantic. Throughout the book she feels like she doesn't know if she belongs and where she wants to go with her live. Feeling stuck in the family business and like she meant for something bigger than what she is doing. I loved not only watching her shine one stage but come into her love of baking. Soon realizing that her calling and her true love was all right in front of her.
Though her confusion of the love spell is extremely frustrating and totally wasted on a dumb actor I think the obstacle was necessary for her to realize her worth, what is important to her in life, and what is right in front of her.
Josh Turner.. THIS MAN obsessed. I genuinely loved this man so much. He is such a staple character for this town and a great man all around. Watching him pine after Poppy is so painful because you know that he loves her so truly and whole heartily. I loved watching the way that he connects with Poppy family and gets the thing that he wishes he would have had.
I loved their first date on the waterfall with picnic it was picture perfect and romantic. I just think that they fit so well together like puzzle pieces. It was cute to see the way their lives fall in place with their career paths, the fight for their house and their future. Overall, just a very good and cute story. I love the representation of plus size women in all of Mary Warren's books and I think it just shows authors and publishers what good representation in writing can look like. Very excited to read Let's Go Lucy!
