Schema Therapy

Rate this book
Schema Therapy combines proven cognitive behavioral therapy techniques with elements of interpersonal, experiential, and psychodynamic therapies in order to help people with long-term mental health problems including personality disorders and chronic depression. Schema Therapy suggests that many negative cognitive conditions are based on past experiences, and therefore provides models for challenging and modifying negative thoughts and behaviors in order to provoke change.

In this book, Eshkol Rafaeli, David P. Bernstein and Jeffrey Young - pioneers of the Schema Therapy approach - indicate the 30 distinctive features of Schema Therapy, and how the method fits into the broader CBT spectrum.

Divided into two parts, Theoretical Points and Practical Points, this book provides a concise introduction for those new to the technique, as well as a discussion of how it differs from the other cognitive behavioral therapies for those experienced in the field.

This was my first introduction to schema therapy and while it did give me an idea of what it is about the book suffered from some flaws which left me unsatisfied.

My biggest problem with the book is the structure. The book is split into a series of "points" each being a short number of pages long. This feels like some marketing idea that someone thought would be a good unique selling point for the series, but in fact interferes with the quality of the content. While it may sound like a good idea to break up the content into bitesize pieces it ends up like the literary version of tapas - disjointed and unsatisfying.

Related to this I got the feeling that the authors were not quite sure who their target audience was. Is the book pitched at general interest, at clients of schema therapy, at trained practitioners, or at psychology students? The content flits wildly between these in what feels like a "something for everyone" approach, but ends up more like "little for anyone". Again I suspect this may be down to the structure as I got the sense that the author had sat down with a numbered list and tried to fill it with "key points".

Having said that about half the points serve as a satisfactory basic overview of the therapy, for those who know nothing about it and want a quick overview.

This is an excellent introduction, and useful companion, to Schema Therapy, suitable for someone unfamiliar with this integrated therapeutic approach. It outlines a structure that makes it easy to understand domains, schemas, and modes, how they manifest and function. For me, this book was a much better place to start learning about Schema Therapy than Young's simplified "self-help" version presented for the layman in Reinventing Your Life. Instead, I began with this "distinctive features" intro book, which highlights for the beginner what Schema Therapy: A Practitioner's Guide by Klosko, Young, and Weishaar covers in detail for those more advanced.

An excellent introduction to schema therapy -- practically perfect, powerfully perspicuous. This book is written for clinicians, and I believe that schema therapy is primarily used for individuals with personality disorders, but I think that many non-clinicians, with or with personality disorders, would benefit from reading this. Schema therapy conceptualizes human personality in a fresh and helpful way, and I feel more self-aware, more in control after reading this.
