With rich imagery and humor that ranges from silly to dark, author Paul Stein takes us into the life of young Harry, his off-kilter family and his chaotic Catholic schooling in working class Pittsburgh in the 1950's and 60's. From snapshots of his first grade and freshman years, the reader follows Harry through a life equally divided between abstract ideals and abuse, the purging brutality of football and artistic expression, cruelty and compassion, to his adulthood in the Arizona desert. There he attempts to make peace between the warring sides of his personality and find through his relationship with one woman the capacity to connect to those things greater than ourselves, the first of which is love.
Paul Stein received a degree in biology from the University of San Francisco. The developer of a rainbow trout hatchery, he became the Chief Deputy Director of the California Department of Fish & Game. He served two terms as County Supervisor and maintains strong ties in the California political landscape. Paul writes from his ranch along the Mokelumne River in Calaveras County.
