He earned a BA in English Literature from Willamette University, Oregon and an MA from Loyola University, Los Angeles. He worked as a schoolteacher, a librarian, and a report writer for a law firm, and was the author of more than thirty acclaimed novels.
He also published more than sixty short stories in magazines such as Ellery Queen, Alfred Hitchcock, and Cavalier, and in anthologies including Modern Masters of Horror.
He died from a massive heart attack on February 14, 2001 (Valentine's Day).

one of my favourite books of all time.

What I love about Laymon is the little details of enigma he creates in his stories that linger long after the more obvious notes of horror have passed by. He plays knowingly with cliches and elements of the genre in a way that is both effective and amusing, and always highly entertaining. Although not 'highbrow' Laymon has a particular skill of creating likeable, believable characters and dialogue along with great atmosphere, so while he is by no means perfect he is a vey enjoyable writer- this book in particular is a favourite of mine as it plays on all of these points brilliantly!
