Thiago was born in Brazil but grew up in the fantasy worlds from the stories he kept in his mind. He has inhabited everywhere from Middle-Earth and Azeroth to the planes of Dominaria, Ravnica and Tarkir. No matter the medium, what kept him coming back was always his love for story.

He could never wait for the next world to dive into, so, after being (indirectly) urged on by the (printed) words of Joe Abercrombie, Mark Lawrence, Patrick Rothfuss, N. K. Jemisin and many, many others, decided to create his own.

After being one of the first reviewers for both A Touch of Light and its prequel novella, A Prelude to Ashes, I had the fortune of serving as a beta reader of this second novel in Thiago Abdalla's Ashes of Avarin series.

Abdalla builds upon the very strong foundation for both A Touch of Light and A Prelude to Ashes, throwing us right into the action (after a super-helpful summary of the plot thus far in the series).

What does A Shade of Madness deliver?

1. More griffins! Lots and lots of griffins!
2. Excellent character development of our three POV characters from the first book, as well as a new POV character.
3. More consistent pacing compared to A Touch of Light.
4. Plenty of exhilarating action sequences.
5. Absolutely top-notch worldbuilding.
6. Did I mention griffins?

Another greast aspect of A Shade of Madness is that there's no additional barrier for understanding the world. (This was the main issue that some people had with the first novel--the worldbuilding is accomplished through a Malazan-style immersive experience that some people found overwhelming. But this barrier is gone by the time you get to Book 2. It's well worth it!)

A Shade of Madness earns a strong 5 stars from this humble reviewer. I'm very excited to see what happens next in the series!

Begins seconds after book 1 and is basically a high-octane action-packed blockbuster from beginning to end. Reversals of fortune, surprising character arcs, and an explosive final act for which I paid for the entire seat but I only needed the edge, snagging that final half star in the process. Thiago excels when the action is tearing us forward.

Thanks to the author for the ARC and for full disclosure, the author is a good friend of mine so take that for what you will.

Abdalla ups his game in this follow-up to A Touch of Light

No punches are pulled in A Shade of Madness. the Stakes are higher and the characters are not messing around. It was so pulse-pounding to see Adrian and all of the other POV straight up EVOLVE. The tension never lets up. Grabbing you and keeping you on the edge of your seat from page one to the end of the book.

Also two words BLOOD & MAGIC (shudders) The madness is an even more terrifying concept than it already was which surprises me since it was already terrifying

The addition of a NEW POV in Kadmus and everything is coming together in this series. It's often the case that a sequel to a fantastic book struggles to live up to its predecessor but there was so much ACTION in this one that I devoured the story.

Ashes of Avarin continues to knock it OUT OF THE PARK

4.5 stars (rounded up)

To say I went into A Shade of Madness with incredibly high expectations would be the understatement of the year. I adored A Touch of Light, but we have all heard of middle book syndrome…. Well, rest assured friends, because Abdalla is back and better than ever in this epic second instalment of The Ashes of Avarin series.

A Shade of Madness starts with a wonderful and in-depth ‘the story so far’ section (THANK YOU), but even without that, the author does a masterful job of subtly reminding you of the important events of book 1 in the text itself. No time is wasted and we pick up right where we left off, so we finally get to see the fall-out of the explosive and jaw-dropping events at the end of book 1.

The plot is less action-packed and the pacing is considerably slower than in the first instalment, which I was personally very happy with. We reconnect with our favourite characters from book 1 and now we get to see how they act when they aren’t in life-or-death situations, which allowed for some amazing character development.
These characters are extremely morally complex, which is exactly what makes their journeys so compelling to follow. They have all lived through immensely traumatic events and I really appreciate the deep and nuanced exploration of mental health here. We really dive deep into how their experiences are shaping and guiding their lives right now and see that everyone copes in their own unique ways, some of them better and healthier than others.
I was surprised by the paths that some of these characters seem to be going down, and yet none of their actions here ever felt out-of-character. You might not agree with all of their actions, but the character work is so solid that you can see what drives them and it’s nearly impossible not to sympathise with them and their situations.
There is also a new POV introduced and I was pleasantly surprised with how quickly I latched onto that new character. His stakes are much more intimate, personal and emotionally-driven, and I thought his storyline added a really nice new perspective on the whole conflict.

Now, less action and a slower pacing does not equal a less engaging story, as the stakes only continue to get raised. Book 1 set up a very interesting world and introduced us to a lot of intriguing concepts and mysteries, but I don’t think I was alone in feeling a little confused while reading, intentional though that may have been. These characters had no idea what was going on, so we as the readers were stumbling in the dark as well.
I am happy to say that we do get some really satisfying reveals here as the characters start to actively dig for answers about the crazy situations they have found themselves in. The expansion of the world building was absolutely astounding and the level of intrigue is cranked up to unimaginable heights.
That said, for all the answers and implications we get, we are left with a whole heap of new questions. I personally really enjoy revelling in the confusion and mystery, but if you are not willing to have patience and to trust the author, then I can see this being a very frustrating series to read. I think Abdalla is a masterful storyteller who knows exactly what he is doing, so I am willing to stumble around in the dark for as long as necessary and make up my own crazy theories along the way.

The prose also continues to be pleasant to read and I really appreciate that it’s so clear and approachable, because the story itself is complex enough as it is. The descriptions are clear and concise, the dialogue is excellent and the inner monologue of the characters is compelling. There are some poignant lines that veer into the philosophical side though, which perfectly fits with the deep and complex themes that are explored in this story.

Overall, I had an absolute blast with this book and I am already dying for the next instalment. I really think that everything that was so enthralling and captivating about book 1 is just expanded and improved upon in this sequel. The cutthroat political intrigue, the thought-provoking questions of death, faith and religion, the compelling characters with their questionable morals, the deep and rich lore, the riveting action scenes, the mystifying magic system and of course the mysterious plague ravaging the world… I was just utterly captivated by it all once again. Oh, and for anyone who was hungering for more griffins, you will not be disappointed here ;)
This series is shaping up to be one of my all-time favourites and I truly think Abdalla is an author to watch. Needless to say that I highly recommend you join the hype train as soon as possible, because this is a wild ride you don't want to miss out on!

Thank you to the author for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

First 5 star of the year!

I really enjoyed A Touch of Light, but did have a few issues with the world building and pacing. A Shade of Madness stepped up and knocked it out of the park! Middle book syndrome? Thiago doesn't know them. This book picks up right where A Touch of Light leaves off and doesn't slow down. We get a lot of answers here and the world and magic explodes. I loved the addition of the new character, and I felt that everyone was fleshed out, captivating, and there really wasn't a POV I didn't want to be in. You guys know I'm not one for big long battle scenes, and they are balanced beautifully in here. Not only is it well written and immersive, but perfectly balanced with more nuanced moments. I can't wait to see where the story goes next!

If you are an epic fantasy reader that likes a multi POV story with intricate magic and world along with politics and militia, you really need to pick this up ASAP.

A Shade of Madness is the excellent follow up to the superb debut, A Touch of Light.

The book picks up where we were left at the end of the first book, and doesn't relent.

All three POVs from book one undergo further character development, with each character's arc adding more depth and intrigue to the overall story.  A Shade of Madness also sees the introduction of a fourth POV character - Kadmus is a brilliant addition and his story adds another dynamic to the story.  Aside from the introduction of Kadmus, which I really enjoyed, I particularly enjoyed Nasha’s development in this book.  Her journey is probably the most interesting and intriguing of the original three for me, and I can’t wait to see where the story takes her in the third installment.

All of the POV's stories are brilliantly told on an internal level. The author is able to convey their inner thoughts and conflict extremely well.  All four POVs are flawed characters, struggling with loss, or the fear of loss and failure, whilst being embroiled in the many political and religious machinations all around them.

Once again, the plotting and pacing is fantastic, and the book reads really quickly. I thoroughly enjoyed my return to the world of Avarin and can’t wait to continue the series in its third instalment.

Thiago Abdalla has created a story that is both gripping and unpredictable, that kept me questioning the motives of its characters, with a mystery that is still as intriguing as it was in book one.

If you loved A Touch of Light, then you will have a great time with this sequel.  If you enjoy high stakes, complex, morally grey characters, blood magic, political intrigue involving religions, and epic battles, then you will love this series.

A Shade of Madness is another touch of brilliance from an author who continues to deliver.

Thank you for taking the time to read my review.

There’s no better time to get into The Ashes of Avarin, with A Touch of Light proudly sitting as an SPFBO8 finalist and A Shade of Madness being published in January.

The second book in the series picks up right where book one left off, so there’s no filling in the gaps, and if you read the books back-to-back, it will no doubt feel like an unbroken story, rather than two separate books.

A Shade of Madness really benefits from the extensive worldbuilding undertaken in A Touch of Light. There’s still plenty to learn, as you would find with any well-written series, but the bulk of the heavy lifting has already been done, allowing this book to shine on the merits of its storytelling and character development.

I definitely appreciated that development during scenes set in the Clanlands, where Nasha was my least favourite POV character in book one, but my opinion of her was greatly improved here. I also liked the introduction of Kadmus, as a fourth POV character with a very different view and very different stakes to the other three.

What I like the most about this book is the level of planning that has evidently gone into it. Tiny little inconsequential notes from book one are brought back in book two and, along with the characters, you realise that they were actually important all along. I love that attention to detail, and it’s little things like this that allow A Shade of Madness to be a complex story without overtaxing the brain.

Some of the revelations in here are very well done, and very welcome. It’s not often that a novel will make me stop and mentally applaud the author with a “Well played, sir”, but that’s exactly what happened on several occasions while reading this. The way the different threads of this story start to become entangled with one another is also excellently done, with both subtle and not-so-subtle crashes starting to happen, bringing answers along with them while also raising new questions.

Much like A Touch of Light, I think this is a book that is destined to grow—rather than fade—in my memory with distance, and that is definitely to be praised. Abdalla is building a carefully planned epic here, and I’m thrilled to be along for the ride.

A second book in a series always runs a risk of being the series’ muddy middle—the reader is wading through it just to get to the next “more important book.” Not the case with A Shade of Madness.

When I read the first book, I commented on the fact that I did not ever think to myself, “I hope the next books are better.” A Shade of Madness went toe-to-toe with its predecessor and came out having proven itself. This book picks right up where the last one left off, and keep towing the line, with that relentless drive A Touch of Light did.

That is not to say it is a steamroller that leaves you gasping for breath. I would not classify it as having a Thriller Pace, but it is always moving, never spending unnecessary time dwelling. It drives.

Our three protagonists of the first book are joined by a fourth who immediately takes his seat at the table, with a unique perspective on the whole situation. His stakes feel genuinely more personal, and common-man.

I called Thiago Abdalla the Bard of Brazil in my last review, and this holds true. He is unfolding a cohesive epic tale that will be one for the books.

A Shade of Madness firmly situates Abdalla with the chance at joining Author Olympus and I look forward to book 3!

A Shade Of Madness is the second book in The Ashes Of Avarin series. This book took everything that A Touch of Light did well and made it several times better while also adding so much more to it. At this point in the book things are slowly starting to make sense and we get to see how deep the roots of revenge and betrayal runs and how far the political conspiracy and maneuvering have happened. It truly is a fantastic continuation with excellent and compelling character arcs. All of the unravelings of the plot is bringing to light the extent of the treachery. With accessible and good writing the story really shines in every way and I had the best time bingeing all three books. I would highly recommend this series to all readers who enjoy high-stakes epic fantasy that is gritty with unique and original religious, political systems, and a fascinating exploration of life, death, grief, mental health, revenge, and so many other themes. Definitely check it out, and I highly, highly recommend it.

a good continuation of the conflict with religion and sorcery

The Madness rages on as the different factions vie for power and control. There is more depth with the three main characters here. They are more centered and know what they want to achieve. We also get more griffins in the battles!
How will the Madness be cured? And will an eventual cure be shared for all to use?

I received this ARC for free in exchange for an honest review. I was very thankful for the summary of book 1 in the beginning to help remind me of what happened. This book ramps up the stakes for Nasha, Adrian, and Lynn. Kadmus was a welcome POV addition. I especially loved seeing the new layers to the Madness and the arcs for these characters, or rather their descent into a darker version of growth. Adrian turned out to be more interesting in this story than in the first to me, and Lynn was still my favorite. Loved seeing more griffins and their bonds with the Sentinels. Nasha's story line took a while for me to get into until the end and I liked seeing these characters eventually meeting some others. This book began to reveal more of the political intrigue going on and the ending gives me hope that all these characters will eventually meet up. The beginning part of the book took a bit to get into but by the middle everything picked up more for me. I'm excited to see how this story continues to unfold in the next book. 4.5

Brimming with intrigue, betrayals, plot twists, frenzied madness, and fervor worship, A Shade of Madness is aptly named and an extraordinary showcase in characterization and well controlled pacing.

Following a much appreciated “story so far” summary of A Touch of Light, the sequel picked up exactly where we left off in book one. A Shade of Madness propels the story forward through the perspective of Adrian, Light of the Legion; Lynn, griffin-riding Sentinel of the Church; and Nasha, Ronar hunter. The addition of a new point of view (Kadmus) greatly enhanced the world building and character development. The new perspective provided a deeper understanding of the events and motivations of the characters, creating a more rich and compelling narrative. The introduction of his character was well executed and immediately pulled me into his character.

“The dead are unworthy, but to deny the use of death as a weapon is to make ourselves weak before it.”

The characters are the beating heart to the story. In all of the characters lives there are notes of taking control of your fate and using their pasts to fuel their futures. These characters are finished letting things happen to them. Striving to achieve success in their own right, they desire to break out from the shadows of expectation and measure. They are willing to become whatever they need to be to make that happen. The growth and change that each character went through created empathy in me as a reader. The showcase of human nature was well received. I loved how Abdalla explored and played around with themes of redemption, transformation, loyalty, guilt, doubt, death, and so many more.

We are learning so much more about Nasha and Lynn as the sequel continued to flesh out their stories. As a number one Adrian fangirl, Lynn and Nasha grew on me in this sequel.

I am personally loving the magic representation, especially the blood magic. I like how it’s described in vivid detailed. “The gestures seemed to amplify the pain. It dug deep, like a hook in his arm– spreading through his veins and ripping through him until it reached his heart.” You really get a feel for how it’s the life force of living beings and the balance that comes with how much a person is willing to give. It’s dark and dangerous because it requires sacrifice in order to fuel its powerful spells and incantations. Practitioners are often portrayed as willing to do whatever it takes to achieve their goals and I think this played perfectly in the hands of one of the main character’s arcs and motivations.

The world building and setting is extensive. A list of characters and names of places at the beginning helped a lot and it was easier to keep track of everything happening as I settled into the story. The characters were positioned in various parts of the world. This helped illustrate current affairs, customs, and culture through a natural unfolding of the setting that continued to build upon elements from the first book. The atmosphere and tone was urgent and dark. Where at times I couldn’t easily visualize the details in book one, Abdalla has stepped it up here. He was specific and used sensory details to create clear imagery. Scenes were enhanced and the plot never felt bogged down by his descriptions.

“Doubt had always been as big an enemy as any.”

There are fantastical griffin creatures, airships, infectious plague, magic, curses, and so much more. Griffins are a little underrepresented in the fantasy genre. I’m glad Abdalla has included these fierce beasts in his series. The griffins are often used in battles and wars, as well as transportation and protection. They are fierce beasts symbolizing strength and courage. I loved how the Sentinels had a connection to their griffins and could pull strength and speed from them.

Darkness around the eyes. Nails grown into claws. Beastly strength. Abdalla let loose the madness with expert control, bringing forth a masterclass in pacing. Each character encountered bits and pieces of the madness which allowed the reader to form a more complete picture of what was plaguing them. The way this piece to the story was handled kept me utterly engaged and eagerly anticipating what would happen next.

Before I finish my review, I wanted to mention that there is a sighting of everyone’s favorite chain of taverns that have reached across worlds and books and authors… The Dripping Bucket. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, it brings me so much joy to see many different authors embrace this idea and include it within their own works. I’m looking forward to where the next Dripping Bucket will land.

Overall, the sequel is a must-read for fans of the series and anyone looking for a well-crafted and engaging story. I’m eagerly anticipating the next installment.

I use a rating system that considers the characters, setting/worldbuilding, atmosphere/tone, writing/narrative style, plot, intrigue, enjoyment, pacing, originality of ideas, and use of themes. After rating each of these areas individually out of 10, I add up, divide and I’m left with a final score that has taken into consideration many different aspects of the story. For the purpose of the blog, this is a rating of 9.2 out of 10. For the purposes of Goodreads, this is a 4.5 out of 5. Thank you to the author for sending me a review copy of A Shade of Madness.

A Shade of Madness is the second installment in the epic fantasy series The Ashes of Avarin, written by the SPFBO8 finalist Thiago Abdalla. After how the first book finished, this second was one of my most awaited titles, and I can say it hasn't disappointed, adding more to what was an excellent story; even an additional POV that has become my favourite one.

Madness is spreading across Avarin, and war is menacing to worsen everything. As an immediate follow-up to A Touch of Light, we pick directly after the conclusion, in a situation that threatens to bring Avarin to dust.

Prince Adrian lost the Legion, but thanks to magic from other countries, he's ready to bring vengeance against the Domain, without forgetting the promise to his father.
Lynn finds herself in a complicated situation, having to fight airships with griffins. Surrounded by enemies, accepting her condition might be the key for all, even if it means succumbing to Madness.
Nasha's curse is threatening to take the best of her. The situation among the tribes is extremely unstable, and without resisting her curse, she would not be able to fulfill her upper proposal.

A fourth POV is added, Kadmus, and honestly, I think it was an absolute success. A sort of doctor, who is desperate, needing to find a cure for Madness, as her daughter is affected; this investigation will attract the attention of people from the highest powers, trying to use this kind of knowledge for war.

Characters are extremely well developed, being most of the POV really intimate, going over their deepest thoughts and ideas. We are able to experience their struggles and their insecurities, getting a better comprehension of why some decisions are taken.

And honestly, if the first book was epic, this one is a step up over what made A Touch of Light an excellent novel. As we dived into a world that we knew previously, the pacing picks up much sooner, leading to spectacular battles and scenes; and even in those POVs that are less action focused, the previous set-up helps to improve them.

A Shade of Madness is an excellent sequel to A Touch of Light. If some people were fearing second-book syndrome, I can assure you that Abdalla has made an excellent job writing another epic book, using the first as the foundation for it.

I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to read A Shade of Madness prior to it's scheduled launch later this month (January 24th). I didn't get through this one as quickly as I anticipated and I just wanted to point this out in case anyone looks close enough to my progresses. This had nothing to do with my interest in the book but simply other factors that prevented me from picking up and continuing as often as I wanted to.

This book literally picks up right where book one left off. I was also lucky with my timing of this as I just recently did a reread of A Touch of Light (audiobook) and read the novella A Prelude to Ashes last month. This world was fresh in my mind for this read. I also want to point out reading the novella which is a prequel to book one seemed very beneficial to me. I seemed to have a better understanding of some of these characters and the world around them with that bit of additional information.

The world building of A Shade of Madness seems to be on par with book one. It might even seem to narrow a bit in scope as the story and our characters begin to grow closer to each other in this world. I'm not sure what Thiago's plan is for this series beyond this book but I'm guessing there will be a meeting and reveal for several things in the near future.

The character development seemed slightly stronger in book two for me. We have several of our characters carry overed from book one including some strong support. Kadmus has been an interesting addition and I'm interested in seeing where his storyline goes from here. We also have many twists with characters in book two which definitely kept things interesting for me.

The pacing was also on par with book one. I never felt like there was any moments that were simply slogs. The story runs along rather smoothly throughout. There are certainly many ebb and flow moments as scenes are introduced before the action arrives but that's rather to be expected.

Overall if you enjoyed book one I'm sure you'll feel the same with book two. I did tell Thiago that I felt like I connected with Lynn's storyline more in book one and then Nasha here in book two. I didn't lose any interested in either Adrian or Lynn, I just felt more connected to Nasha's story in this one. As previously mentioned I also recommend reading A Prelude to Ashes before book two if you haven't read it yet. I just feel you may have a better understanding of Adrian and the Church by doing so.

This is one of my most anticipated reads. And I can't wait to read it.!

CONVINCING YOU TO READ THIS IN 6 WORDS:
Character Arcs, Religious & Political Intrigue, Betrayals, Plot-twists, Interesting world-building

Death is merely one of the players. If you refuse to acknowledge that, you are at a severe disadvantage.

A Shade of Madness by Thiago Abdulla proved exactly what it is- MADNESS. The second book in the Ashes of Avarin series picks up exactly where we stopped in book 1, A Touch of Light. A Touch of Light had left all our characters in ashes and in confusion, questioning everything they knew. While, they are still questioning everything around, they are slowly trying to come in terms with things around, they are slowly realising how everything around has two aspects what is the truth and what they know. And honestly, I loved seeing this. This small- small things make this more realistic.

We follow the journey through 4 sets of eyes instead of 3 and what a brilliant addition.!! Kadmus, Nasha, Lynn and Adrian- the 4 of you have been a fantastic narrators and wow...just the way they are different and in hindsight facing the same problem yet how at different stages they are. I love how with each chapter, we see a new face. How despite knowing better, they make decisions that they don't want to but because they have to. How they are tested again and again and yet despite wanting to just let go, they are there and they are fighting. Love every moment here.

The best part about A Shade of Madness is characters and they way they are reacting. Don't get me wrong, the plot is amazing too. But the characters? They shined for me. Especially because with each new "truth" that came in their way, they grew. Despite their anger and all the WHAT THE HELL feelings, they faced it. Despite feeling betrayed, despite losing people in their way, despite repeatedly being lied too and abandoned, they managed to grow. And I LOVE THEM FOR THIS.

Wars are rarely born of logic, but there is unique opportunity for scientific advancement in the desperation of men fighting to protect all they hold dear.

Thiago did his magic and slowly despite the varieties and differences in their ideologies, their teachings, they are coming along well. I honestly can't wait to see the final picture. Is it too much to ask for the other two books already? Or it is acceptable?  From writing to the intriguing plot, everything is perfect, especially Griffins. You had to know that was coming. I read about Griffins a long time ago and I was always aware about the lack of books with Griffins, at least in front of me. But not anymore. I LOVE THEM HERE. Their fierce nature and their battle cry.

In short, if my rambling wasn't clear, A Shade of Madness is an amazing book that you need to pick up and enjoy every element you're looking for in a Fantasy world, including but not limited to characters constantly learning, betrayals, shocking truths, hidden truths and promises left unattended and well, death. Of course, add Griffins.

The power held in a griffin's heart is limited.

The Ashes of Avarin is addictive and I cannot wait for book 3.

A Shade of Madness had me gripped throughout. This is a step up from A Touch of Light in every way. I found that Abdalla was able to make my least favorite character from book 1 into my top favorite in book 2. Even still, each of the PoV's are interesting and well executed.

This series has moved up to a read on release for me. Really excited to see what comes next.

A Shade of Madness is everything a sequel should be. It expertly builds upon the lore established in its predecessor, slowly peeling the layers back to reveal more and more of its world, until you're in disbelief that it's already over.

The tension does not let up after the previous book's stunning finale. Abdalla perfectly weaves epic battles, brutal politicking, mysterious magic, betrayals, blind faith, and much more into a cohesive package that instills dread, thrills, and excitement all in equal measure. It's a testament to his skills as a writer that even when much of the world remains shrouded in mystery, I always wanted to move on to the next page and see what kernel would pop next.

All four POV characters are developed extremely well with character arcs that stunned me just as quickly as they had me cheering. Themes of ambition, love, duty, and family are handled wonderfully, and the depths to which each character would go in pursuit of them always had me on the edge of my seat.

A Shade of Madness only further asserts that The Ashes of Avarin is a series demanding of your attention. Man your griffins and enjoy the ride.

Free arc given in exchange for an honest review

A Shade of Madness is a spectacular second book in the Ashes of Avarin series.
Thiago has really stepped up a notch with this book from an already impressive book 1, A Touch of Light.
First off, I read A Touch of Light recently, but even then really appreciate the thorough “the story so far” synopsis that is provided at the start of this book. It was detailed and filled you right back up to speed very neatly.
The book picks up immediately where the previous left off and we are thrown right back into the thick of it and into the action. This book really keeps the tension and stakes high for all of the characters from the get go, but is written so well and in such a way that you don’t feel like it’s unnecessarily tense or long-winded.
We are also treated to a good look behind the thoughts and actions of the main POVs in their internal monologue, and OH BOY do these guys have some internal struggles going on. The deep look at the mental health and wearing down of these characters really serves to humanise them and allows us to connect very well.
The politicking in this book was also a nice step up from the previous, and the backstabbings and sneaky tricks and deals were executed well and always came as a shock not just for the main characters, but for me as a reader as well.
The worldbuilding is very well carried on from the first book, and we start getting more in depth views into the lives and societies of some of the land, like the Clanlands, who had so fantastic tribal scenes that will keep you up with adrenaline.
I think my favourite POV in this book has to be Kadmus, he was a stand-out character in terms of how much I wished every next chapter was one of his. His backstory was tragic, his drives emotional and he just squeezes every drop of empathy out from me.
If you enjoyed the pacing of book 1 then you’ll be very happy and right at home with this book, as the ebb and flow of the novel is very similar. Thiago has stuck the chord perfectly with this and keeps you engaged throughout.
I am still left shuttering slightly from the very dramatic and brutal aspects of some of the magic systems and bravo Thiago for having such an imaginative and exciting way of doing magic.
If you like several POV, some good action sequences, well developed characters and a good dash of politics, oh and LOTS of griffins…then I highly recommend putting this book on your TBR for 2023.
I am excited for book 3, the climax of this book FLEW past too quickly and I really need the next set of chapters immediately…

I received an arc copy of A Shade of Madness from the author - thank you Thiago. My review is honest and my opinions are my own.

A Shade of Madness is the unrelenting pressure cooker of a sequel to A Touch of Light. The Madness is spreading further throughout Avarin and we discover more about its origins. A new point of view character is added to the three from the previous book. Kadmus is a scientist searching for a cure for his daughter’s Madness, while trying to keep her illness a secret.
Adrian continues on his vengeful crusade to save the Domain from the evils of Dakhar and has discovered previously untapped powers of blood magic which have gained him an army which he hopes will turn the tide of the war. He has also gone through a fair amount of character development and gained a backbone along the way.

“We all have our sacrifices.”

Nasha is learning to control her “gift/curse”, continues protecting Shai and has discovered the key to controlling emotions may be contained in the ancestor stone (known as ruin stone to the other characters). As with the other main characters, she is relentlessly fighting against those tainted by the Madness.

“Everyone’s monster is someone else’s hero.

Meanwhile Lynn the griffin rider has risen through the ranks of the Sentinels, having proven her allegiance to the order. Her confidence is increasing and she is experimenting with controlling the Madness in her own way, through her Bond, and through her own use of the ancient ruin stone. These characters’ arcs are becoming interwoven and we see them encountering one another in this tangled tapestry of a novel. They have a common goal, but each has their own personal losses and individual reasons for wanting to defeat the Madness.

The Seraph’s Eye is still in the sky getting larger and brighter - my comet theory about it still holds. I guess I’ll need to read the future books to see if I am right.

As in the previous novel it is clear that Abdalla really knows how to build a scene, utilizing the reader’s senses to place us right there in the world with the character, imagining we can see and smell what they can:

“She breathed in the smoky scent of the Great Mountain, and the biting smell of citrus trees. That, and the scent of the death from the crow-picked bodies on the battlefield before her.“

The tone of the story continues to be dark and gritty, not for the faint-hearted, while the scope and breadth is even more epic and the world has opened out substantially wider than in Book 1.

“This is war. Death is merely one of the players.”

I thoroughly enjoyed my return to war-torn/zombie-infested Avarin and was delighted to discover that Book 2 was even more gripping and enjoyable than the first book in the series, and that there were more griffins! Here’s hoping that this upward trajectory will continue - I will be eagerly looking out for the next installment.

A Shade of Madness by Thiago Abdalla
I was lucky enough to receive an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review. I honestly loved it. There is something still missing to be a true 5 stars for me but everything else was great. I am excited to continue the series in the future.

So what worked for me?
World building: The world was one of the strongest parts of the story with interesting and unique elements. I loved exploring religions and how the different people interact with each other. There is great potential in the future.
Plot: I loved the plot and how I was invested the entire time. There are unique elements that made the story fresh for me.

What did not work for me?
Characters: While I love more of the characters I still have a hard time with Adrian’s POV however I can feel that might change for me in book 3.

Who would I recommend this book to?
This series is definitely for the more experienced fantasy reader. The world and themes are complex and could confuse people newer to the genre. Also I would suggest reading book 2 right after book 1 for maximum enjoyment.

Score: 9/10
Character: 8
Plot: 9
World-Building: 10
Writing: 9
Enjoyment: 9

This review is for an arc provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Thiago has done it again , this is certainly a book that doesn't suffer from second book syndrome .

We pick up where we left off in a touch of light, but with a new character which I personally love as he is a relatable, emotionally driven character.

Other we all know are given increased stakes and can step out of the shadow of the bigger POVs and are given much needed room to breathe and become integral.

The prose are fantastic, the action is fantastic and the pace is fast without being break neck and bring pulled along kicking and screaming

This review is for an ARC for this book.
Again, the characters created and developed by Thiago were intriguing, engaging, and easy to either hope for or rally against.
The world that is being created and expanded is well thought out. Each new development or reveal deeps the lore and continues the development of the people, world, religion, as well as my own theories of where the story is headed or at least where I want the story to go.
If you like the first book in this series "A Touch of Light" I would get your preorder started.

I truly enjoyed (well, that sounds weird...since a LOT of bad things happened in this book) reading this book. It wasn't always comfortable, but definitely intriguing.

It is safe to say that Adrian Pell is the main character, but withing THIS book, he's taken a turn (at least in my mind) and he MAY not be a "good guy". I guess, it is whether you are OKAY with a lot of his decisions and actions...that he takes. "The ends justify the means" is a phrase that comes to mind. In our own world (reality), I'd have to say that I would NOT be okay with following a leader IF they used this phrase as a motto for their actions. Nope. Wouldn't be okay with that. Now, in THIS world, a LOT of bad sh_t happens, and it seems...that it has been happening (with the help of a LOT of grey characters) for a LONG time. So, who's to blame...will go back a few generations, but since these people live for hundreds of years...that's a LONG, LONG, time.

I am still pulling for him, for he is deeply flawed, but for some reason, I want him to be a good guy (Glocta comes to mind).

While reading this series, the religious system and their leader, The Holy Church of the Seraph/The High Pontiff...remind me of a corrupt version of the Roman Catholic church...which in my views, is corrupt. So, a corrupt squared religious organization? Yeah, I have my doubts about their efficacy.

A new character that became highly important in this story was Kadmus. In some ways, I want to like him, but in other ways...he reminds me of Josef Mengele. Experimenting on others, to find a cure. Fine for the people who benefit from the experiments, but a bummer for all those who were the test subjects along the way. Yikes.

The Sentinel Lynn. I want to like her, too...but she's done things that even her peers have trouble accepting...and in this book...she continues to have to do the "right thing", but others are paying the price. As we are in their heads, we understand WHY she's taking the actions and how she comes to THESE (difficult) decsions, but phew. Now easy to stomach, from a person looking in, without that requisite knowledge.

Nasha and Shai, and their desire to find a cure (from their POV) is also fraught with tangible issues that make you wonder IF they are doing the right thing, for all the right reasons.

...that being said, about the above characters...I still do NOT understand who is doing it best, and even who are adversaries...honestly. I think each of them are polar opposites, but I could also see them (each of them) making alliances with any (or all) party...for the furtherance of their desire to find a cure for The Madness, or USE The Madness to "conquer" or "tame" the world that they live in...for the cure is ephemeral (really). Is this the NEW norm, and there's "no going back"? They've crossed the Rubicon, and now they just have to find the "best, worst case scenario".

So, with all the above in mind...I really DO need the third book to be released IMMEDIATELY. Ugh. To have to ponder these deep thoughts (for any real length of time" is going to weigh heavy on my little brain.

Great characters, unique and diverse world, complicated MESS to deal with...and I really do not know who I want to be leader/ruler by the end of this tale. Truly a complex set of circumstances...and I'm all in for it.

A riveting sequel that hits the ground running. Packed with action, intrigue, and suspense, we see just how much Thiago Abdalla’s writing has grown.

This sequel picks up right where book one, A Touch of Light, leaves off and introduces a POV from a new character, Kadmus. Coming back to Adrian, Lynn, and Nasha along with the introduction of Kadmus felt effortless. Not only were their respective roles throughout the story intriguing but there were plenty of developments that had me on the edge of my seat.

Thiago Abdalla also showcases his skill with character work here as these characters felt nuanced and their growth genuine. I also appreciated the exploration of morally grey characters, foreshadowing and all the scheming.

Ultimately, the characters growth throughout the book was enticing, and the impact the plot developments had on their motivations, captivating.

In terms of plot and pacing, this starts off with a fast pace and keeps that momentum to the end. Both events and interactions between characters were engaging and helped keep the pace consistent throughout the book. Personally, I had to hold back the desire to binge this. It’s packed with suspense, reveals and twists but also plenty of detail. As a result, I needed to remind myself to slow down, so I didn’t miss anything.

The world is also further expanded along with the magic, making it feel more immersive. While I began to understand more of the world, it’s history and religions, there’s still and air of mystery that leaves me wondering what will happen to the world next.

As this series showcases different cultures and religions coming to conflict, the way this is done felt seamless with the individual plot lines of the main characters. The storytelling felt purposeful and driven, giving slower moments a sense of urgency to them.

I also did an immersion read of this with the hardcover and audiobook, narrated by Kevin Kemp. The hardcover itself is beautiful with illustrations, and artwork inside. And Kevin Kemp did a fantastic job at narrating the book with individual voices for each character.

Simply put, Thiago Abdalla has crafted an intricate world, filled with political scheming, satisfying payoffs, enticing character work and more griffins.

I look forward to book three and what happens next.

I’d highly recommend this series for anyone who enjoys religious influences, political fantasy and stories that leave you theorizing.

4.5 stars | A Touch of Light left a question of how good the next book in the series would be. And I’m very happy to say that Thiago Abdalla and A Shade of Madness delivered! The second installment maintains all the strong points of the first one while expanding the world of Avarin in every way. Here we learn a lot more about its politics, characters, magic system - which is one of the coolest parts of the series - and the plot is always moving forward at the fast pace that we got accustomed to in A Touch Light. We even get an additional main POV that shows the story from a different and interesting perspective.

Of course, there’s also a lot of action! Thiago is one of the best authors I’ve read recently when it comes to writing action and battle scenes. They’re not too long and you can picture everything while reading them. And yes, we have MORE GRIFFINS!

But on the other hand, we get slower chapters where the author is able to develop the characters a little bit more. I can already see (I think!) where a few of these characters' arcs are heading and I couldn't be more excited! These slower moments also shine a light on a handful of good secondary characters, who I know will become a few of my favorites. To me, this is a clear improvement in relation to the first book.

The last 100 pages also flew by like in the first book and left me wanting more from the story. I’d say that A Shade of Madness is just as good as its predecessor or even better! If you didn’t give this series a try yet, I strongly encourage you to and I cannot wait for the next one!

An ARC was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
