Menteuse

Rate this book

I believe my third venture into these two author's books, not as good as the first two. Nice premise in creating a fake relationship and the two leads were interesting enough, with some nice themes including a transgender best friend of one of the leads, but in the end the entire premise just did not hold up. Somewhat disappointing as there was absolutely no need to insert a 'national championship' basketball game in the mix. 3+ stars.

I don't say this a lot but this was genuinely bad, I'm afraid. Lots of really beginner mistakes (that can absolutely be worked on, author) but absolutely detract from this book. For example, someone clearly told this writer than "she said" is to be avoided because as a result, we have incredibly redundant sentences such as "I'm sorry," she apologized (not actual example but to illustrate the problem). It gets VERY old very quickly.

Additionally, every second line of the dialogue in this book is either someone whispering or screeching, which is incredibly strange. Regular people having conversations do not whisper much unless it's a moment of vulnerability or an admission they do not wish to make or communicate secretly. Overusing these two makes most of the dialogue sound deranged.

Beyond the actual technical issues above, there are some really weird things going on this book. For example, the main character makes a weird joke that people call homophobic and "cancel" her, but she reacts by (as a straight woman) fake coming out as a lesbian (not bi or anything, just a total lie at the time) and finding a fake girlfriend who is an out lesbian. Sprinkle in incessant homophobia and transphobia for no reason and you have the rest of this book.

The primary relationship is also not believable at all since it goes from 0 to 100 within a chapter too.

Sorry, this was just bad for me and there was nothing at all that I enjoyed despite there being a lot of interesting stuff to dive into with poverty, using social media to get out of a small town, someone being the only trans woman in a high school, and discovering your sexuality but none of it is really given any nuanced treatment.

Recomendado.

Nina is on top of the high school food chain, as the basketball team captain and an increasingly popular social media influencer. But all of that image hides a difficult home life with little money compared to her well off friends. When Nina, drunk at a party, makes what comes off as a homophobic video, she's suddenly persona non grata. So she decides to win back her followers by taking on a fake girlfriend. She chooses Alexia, a smart girl whose been tutoring Nina in math.

This is a quick read and ends like all fake gf books. The writing felt simplistic, even for AI.

Liar is a high school based fake dating tale featuring basketball star Nina and quiet introvert Alexia. The impetus behind the scheme is a poorly received social media post on Nina’s part. The story has some cute moments, but the relationship between the two does not seem entirely believable. There is a decent supporting cast with both supporters and detractors. Most of these secondary characters have largely one-dimensional roles, though there are a couple of standouts. This is an easy read with minimal, albeit appropriate angst. The ending is satisfactory if a bit sudden.

DNF’d at 55% because I accidentally deleted the wrong Amazon account and have now lost over 170 books and countless of dollars :’) the first 55% was cute though! A great YA book on queerness and internalised homophobia without being too heavy.

I don't know how to explain it but this book feels like it was either written by someone who hasn't started high school yet, or someone who haven't been to high school in over twenty years
