A Midlife Magical Adventure #1

Hunter Jones and the Sword of the Middle Ages

Rate this book
This quest for a magical sword might just have a double edge.

Cheating husbands are the worst, but barring her from teaching archaeology anywhere in the country? Clearly their relationship is ancient history.

Now Hunter Jones must find a new gig, and flower arranging isn’t it.

Imagine her surprise when she discovers she’s half fae and is offered the chance to vie for a professorship at the Crown Academy. The only problem? To get the job she has to go on a dangerous quest against magical adversaries to find the famed sword of the Middle Ages, rumored to be Excalibur.

In competition for the position is the too hot, young valedictorian, Exeter, who has spent his entire life working toward this professorship. He’s not going to let a middle-aged newbie to the magical world take the opportunity from him.

Only, they must work together as they travel to Ireland, moving through both the human and the magical world as they seek the sword. Can Hunter keep up with the competition, or is her husband right about her losing her touch?

Hunter Jones and the Sword of the Middle Ages is the first book in Melle Amade's new Middle Age series. I struggled a bit with this book because of the main character. Hunter isn't exactly the most likable character. I get that she's been through a lot with a cheating ex who then turns around and ruins her life even further. However, she takes on an entitled attitude and overly dramatizes a lot of things. She grumbles...a lot and that's just not something that will endear you to anyone. She's a frustrating character, and it's a while before things get better. I don't like the constant references on her part to her age and the difference in age between her and her love interest. Mention it a few times? Okay. Constantly? Please don't. There's just a lot that makes this story a struggle to read, but then there are good moments that push you to want to go a little deeper.
There are also predictable elements that you will see coming a mile away. I'd have preferred some more surprises, but it's okay. I'm hoping that the storyline will improve with the next book since I loved this author's last series. For now, I'm going to stick it out with these characters, but we'll see what happens next.
Soft 4 out of 5 stars.

Hunter Jones and the Sword of the Middle Ages by Melle Amade is the first book in the 'A Midlife Magical Adventure' series and a truly fun adventure! Especially for those of us on the higher specter side of the age scale 😂 Amade is a master at creating fun new paranormal worlds with engaging, charismatic characters and this one was jk exception!

This is the story of Hunter, a woman on the cusp of a downward swing having lost her job and her marriage thanks to a cheating husband, when she finds out that she has a family she knew nothing about. A magical fae family that also promised her to another…

So off she embarks on a journey to see if there’s a way out of this arranged marriage. What ensues next, in true Amade midlife fashion, is an adventure full of secrets, a dangerous quest full of powerful magical adversaries as well as lots of hilarity and steamy fun!

If you love quick fun stories of love and adventure featuring older woman and a magical King Arthur twist then this is the one for you!

This was fabulous!!!!! Really i loved it! Hunter is an intelligent woman, a bit naïve but with a good heart after divorcing she is trying to built back her life which is not easy when her ex has her fired but she is trying until the day a man comes to tell her they are getting married because like him she is fae and it has been decided.
Hunter is not a woman to have her fate decided for her, so learning her father is fae and someone important may be disturbing but she stand her ground refusing the wedding...in exchange she accepts a quest to find an old fae artefact even if she must do it with Exeter's help, a "fae" determined to find it first to become teacher in the paranormal academy. Giants, werewolves, vampires and others, Hunter will need to learn rules and other things about this new world and fast

i loved the investigation, and hunter's magic sound fabulous. I liked the bantering with Exeter and how they can be protective of each other. The ending is a cliffhanger though and i definitively would love to read more about her adventures.

A middle aged divorcee who finds out she is half fae and a dragon shifter who loses his ability to shift? Sign me up!

A dropping of a bouquet of flowers quickly enlightens Hunter to the fact that there is more to her life than meets the eye. She meets a father who is alive and well and must embark on a quest to find a sword, in order to free herself from an arranged marriage! The only problem is the young and very handsome Exeter, who accompanies her on this quest.

This is not the usual genre of book I read so I was a little hesitant when I started it. However, I was hooked! I loved it so much. The writing style was so easy to read and I especially enjoyed the short chapters. This is the first book I have read by this author and I will definitely be reading more! I cannot wait to read the second book in this series.

Being of a certain age, I have liked this new trend of “older” female protagonists, and since I’d read this author before, I was eager to read this new one. Hunter has pretty much lost most of the things in her life after her divorce including her job, and she finds out that she has a whole new family, including that her family promised her to another. She goes on a quest with a friend of her newly found father to find a way out of that arranged marriage. This is a fun little adventure full of good writing and lots of fun. I felt so much for Hunter, and I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next. I thought the end was just a tad rushed, but it wasn’t bad. Give this a try! Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

The thing that makes me love this book / series and author more than most paranormal reads is that we have main characters of a certain age. I can relate to this age and these characters. While it may not be for everyone, I love that our main character, Hunter is still portrayed in a fun, exciting and adventurous way. This series that takes place in the same universe as the Cougar Creek coven so if you loved this book as much as I did and can't wait for book 2 and have not yet read Cougar Creek series - jump on that! A quirky and fun cozy mystery with all the paranormal creatures and characters you could want and all the fun and adventure too! A wonderful read and I can't wait for more!!!

This book was given to me for free at my request and I voluntarily provided this review.

Oh my gosh! That was so much stinking fun. Set in the same universe as the Cougar Creek coven, this book takes us to places within the world of the Legendi that we’ve only ever heard about. I adored Hunter. It was so easy for me to connect with her and her experiences. I could feel her reactions being the same as my own would have been in similar circumstances. And even though I have a little bit of knowledge about their world through the Cougar Creek series, it seemed as though everything Hunter learned was new to me, as well. That ending has left me a bit gobsmacked and I can’t wait to find out what’s going to happen next.

A quirky midlife cozy mystery

Hunter, a former archeology professor, has been going through a bit of a midlife crisis since her divorce and firing from the university she worked at with her ex-husband. As the story progresses a suitor appear out of thin air, she gets more things tangled without care, and a push to succeed may just send them into danger’s lair. Hunter Jones and the Sword of the Middle Ages is a quirky midlife cozy mystery with fae, witches, vampires, demigods, and shifters. I can only imagine the mischief that awaits Hunter in her next quest.

I received a free copy of the book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.

I am a big fan of this author's recent series that are set in the same world as this book, as well as the extraordinary heroines that dominate these books. All are middle aged women with limited or no knowledge of the supernatural, suddenly being thrown into chaos and magic. Hunter Jones is no exception, finding out her fae heritage in her mid-forties. The story of seeking Excalibur has a serious Indiana Jones vibe, and the FMC name underlines it even more. Another great element is going on the quest with a much younger man (fae) who is like a complete opposite of Hunter, and their interactions are really hilarious with the added chemistry and clashing attitudes. Fully recommended read.

44 year old and a divorcee Hunter's (FMC) life changes when a strange guy turns up claiming that hes destined to marry her. Obviously she was a little bit reluctant. It opens her eyes to a new Supernatural World that shes completely unprepared for. Fae, Dragons, Vampires, Werewolves..........etc this book was filled with all of them. It was a caper of a read that followed Hunter on her quest. It was full of fun and cracking one liners from both Hunter and Exeter. Now that was a cheeky cliffhanger ending but it made me want to get my hands on the next book now

I've really got into paranormal women's fiction over the last year or so. I love reading about FMCs that I can relate to! This is in the same universe as a couple of the author's other series, and adds a twist of Indiana Jones to the mix, as the plot revolves around a quest for the titular sword.

Overall, I enjoyed the story, and I'm looking forward to seeing where this series goes as Hunter learns more about her background. I love tales where characters discover the supernatural around them, and that even they may not be exactly what they think.

Hunter Jones and the Sword of the Middle Ages brings middle-aged Hunter Jones wide-eyed and slightly pushed into the world of the Legendi. I mean who wants to find out that their half-fae and all they’ve known is a lie at 40+? Throw in archaic customs that she’s expected to uphold and it’s no wonder Hunter is hesitant.

Stuck with a prickly grad student that’s hotter than hot, Hunter is off on a quest that will determine her cuter in the Legendi world. Mystery, hilarity, and healthy does of steam see readers through fun landscapes in search of the sword that will change Hunter’s life.

Quirky Fun!

Hunter Jones is a great, relatively quick read! I absolutely devoured it! She is quirky and so much fun to read about. She’s the kind of heroine I wish I could befriend in real life! She and Exeter were an interesting combination, with him as the younger party. I loved the dynamics between them—and am very curious to see where the story goes!

I love a well written midlife story, and I have to say Melle Amade is only improving with every new tale she publishes!

I enjoyed this book because of the lost treasure aspect. It was smooth read that I was able to finish in 1-2 days. It was nice how I was surprised by how everything played out & it wasn't all tied off with a near & pretty bow. Mistakes happened & I didn't know who I should be rooting for at one point.

I would have liked it more if Hunter wasn't so focused on the age gap so much. It began to make it feel a bit awkward rather than letting it happen naturally. She has another adventure coming up so I am looking forward to seeing how she handles this next one.

This is a great Midlife Fae Story about Hunter who learns that she is Fae as well as human. The quest to find the sword is a delightful adventure, with the addition of a Fae named Exeter. They have their differences but when they come together, Fireworks! I Loved It!!! No Spoilers!
I received an ARC from the Author and I am Leaving this Totally Honest Review because I Choose to and think that this a Great Midlife Fae Story!!!

Omg yessssss at last something I hesitated over reading turned out to be epically amazing.

Don't get me wrong reading about younger MC is pretty good and really popular but reading about someone who is divorced and middle aged just made me a whole lot happier.

Absolutely loved reading about hunter and her journey, in her 40s and she just finds out she's part fae I mean brilliant I cannot wait for book two now

This was such an interesting story! I love the blend of fae magic and history, it grabbed my attention right away. The FMC Hunter is discovering after a midlife divorce that she isn't fully human, she's half-fae. And goes from being the smartest person in the room to knowing and understanding nothing about the new world.

There is a lot going on in this book, and I'm curious as to where the author will take Hunter's journey next!

Hunter Jones and the Sword of the Middle Ages by Melle Amade is the first book in the 'A Midlife Magical Adventure' Series. I love this new trend towards characters of all ages and stages in their lives, it makes the stories so much more relatable, even if they are part of the paranormal community!!! I have read this brilliant author before and again she hasn't disappointed. This new series has already engaged my interest and I'm definitely looking forward to the next installment!!!

Hunter Jones and the Sword of the Middle Ages is an adventurous journey to discover the titular sword. Hunter Jones has an Indiana Jones style feel. She is going thru a midlife crisis after losing her job and being divorced. She takes on the task to discover the titular sword and gets sucked into a magical world. I highly recommend you join Hunter on her adventure.

Don’t get me wrong, I still love Academy books with college age or late teens, but something about a grown adult going on an adventure and figuring out life and what they want with it just hits different. I loved this book, the world, and the characters and after the ending definitely hope to see more.

I liked this story, and especially the fact that it’s a slightly different trope or vibe within the kick@ss-midlife-protagonist stories of late. Hunter is a fascinating character! A lot of potential growth for her… One exciting adventure, that’s for sure, as she was suddenly thrust in a world with fae, magical beings, and dealing with all of that. I really enjoyed the mix of mythologies.

fantastic!

Hunter jones has grit. From being a supposed normal human divorced and 44 , her world gets turned upside down and I loved every moment of it. To find out you are a halfling and then promised to someone. It was a rush everything happened so fast for her. Then to embark on a quest for a sword with a young shifter. I can’t wait to see what happens next .

Short and needs clean up of quotation marks.

This was a short and quick read. The storyline was okay, but could definitely be fleshed out more. The main issue with this book is that what should have been ending quotation marks are using beginning quotation marks instead. There was also at least one sentence with an additional quotation mark that didn't need to be there.
