This was really interesting. It's a dystopia where people on Earth were basically forced to play games to survive. The game masters were based on fairy tales, so you have characters like Santa Claus, Grandma Wolf, Cinderella, etc.
I LOVE THE GAMES, the author clearly spent time plotting out how it would work and it's really satisfying to see how each situation develops.
The main BL couple met each other through playing online bridge and they developed a tacit understanding despite never meeting each other. When the Earth changes, they still manage to find each other because it's obviously fate, though they don't know they've found each other until halfway (I think) through the book? So they reluctantly develop a partnership before realizing that they already have an understanding and they're like what's the chances they'll find another soulmate??? It's a chinese webnovel so it's not blatantly fabulous, but the UST IS REAL, and they're basically soulmates and it's just so much MOEMOEKYUNNNN. I ROLLED AROUND SO MUCH WHEN THE TWO OF THEM INTERACT AAAAA.
The characters and side characters are all really well developed too and I DIDN'T WANT THIS TO END, IT'S ONLY 240 CHAPS (+ 5 chap side stories).
I probably read it in around 2 days or so (non-stop reading). I think this is the longest review I've written lol.
Oh man, oh man, how to describe my feelings about this book? I went into kind of a black hole of reading cnovels after finishing MXTX's three novels and I kept getting hit with a bit of disappointment. From my monumental September spite-read, to a couple of quick transmigration novels that started off interesting until I realized I was reading the same book over and over again with vaguely different catches, to a few really interesting things I hadn't read before but still didn't quite tip over the line into "REALLY GOOD" and then I stumbled into this. This amazing and fascinating novel. NGL, the two main things that drew me to this book were that 1.) it was a finished translation and 2.) the main characters were pre-established as gay. None of that weird falling in love while insisting they're straight or the whole "I'm only gay for you" nonsense, which is such a relief, I can't even. This book also managed to hit one of my favorite things in writing which is a slow burn romance that is quite literally SLOW BURN. The UST is real and it was a wonderfully agonizing wait for the two characters to get together. The really great thing though is that the romance wasn't the main point of the story. It was icing on the cake to a fascinating story about two incredibly smart people trying to figure out how to survive in a world that is actively, maliciously trying to kill them. All of the supporting characters were wonderfully developed and just because Tang Mo and Fu Wenduo left them behind, didn't mean that their contributions to the story ended. There were moments when they would go to fight something themselves that left me on the edge of my seat and overwhelmed with anxiety at the thought that they might die. Looking back on it, I kind of find myself marveling over how delicately the bits of character building were interwoven in the story to make me care about a large cast of characters who essentially popped in and out of the story. It isn't that EO didn't have it's share of cannon fodder characters, but I was taken by surprise by the characters I couldn't wait to die only for their deaths to hit me like a punch in the chest to characters who I expected to hate but ended up becoming terribly precious to me . In terms of the world building, there were a lot of times while I was reading this when the scenes would suddenly play out so vividly in my mind that all I could think was "I want to watch this so bad" and this is still true. If it was announced tomorrow that there was going to be a donghua, I would be screaming in agonized frustration over the wait until it releases. It dips into things I've seen done before in a way that manages to make it very real to me but also still maintains a sense of fascinating originality. The puzzles were very well plotted out although really difficult to come to a solution on your own. I eventually stopped even reading the rules when they were initially announced because I knew I wasn't going to be able to figure them out, however when Tang Mo and/or Fu Wenduo do, it left me a little astounded. I think the only drawback for me was that I found the truth of the black towers to be both baffling and anticlimatic and also, there were a few times when I wished the story would just hurry up a little bit. When I finished it, I wasn't thinking man that was really damned good, but I did think it while I was reading it, and after I've really let what I read percolate in my mind, I think it definitely joins the ranks of MXTX's books as best cnovels I've read.
A very very creative novel. This is similar to Global University Entrance Examination In a apocalyptic world, people are forced into Battle Royale-style cruel games with high death rates, run by a senseless, inhumane and and almost sadistic 'System', with two main characters who are very intelligent and can exploit the loopholes, and who start out as enemies but turn into lovers. But where GUEE was like a 'lite' version of this genre, this book really delved into it. The games in this novel are like math or logic problems, and feature a sadistic and twisted version of popular story characters like Cinderella, Santa Claus...
Systems in Chinese novels/webnovels (transmigration system, systems in these apocalyptic novels) always remind me of an amalgamation the Chinese government, Weber's theory about bureaucracy, and the rigid social mores that underlie Chinese culture that have turned rogue and monstrous. This novel was no exception. The true villain was always the system, pitting humans against each other and bringing out the worst in people in a dog-eat-dog world. The apocalypse having game-related elements and basically resembling your average melee game but with RL consequences (killing enemies kills actual people, regional players and regional servers, props as rewards, clearing bosses and floors...) was very interesting.
The book starts out quite slow, but really picks up speed by the second half. The mysteries were based off real-world physics, science, philosophy, math and logic concepts and really made me think lol. The cast of secondary characters was awesome. I especially love Mo Huixue and wished she had lived longer. A lot of the plot-twists were really unexpected and gripping, especially the ones near the end. It was riveting - I think this author is really good at writing mystery, thriller and plot-twists. Some of the plot twists really haunt me.
Romance was very very light; in fact, this is more of a mystery/psychological novel than a romance lol. The book in general didn't really touch much on anyone's emotions - you don't get a lot about the two main leads' developing feelings and it's pretty subtle and understated. You also don't get much exploration into the general psyche of the people after eight months of apocalyptic Hunger Games-like games.
But there were still A LOT of unanswered questions. So... who is Eve? What happened to her? How were Eve's chosen selected? And I'm not sure how to feel about the fact that all civilizations are put to a senseless, cruel 'test' or 'evaluation' once they have hit a certain level of progress or advancement. There's also some very subtle ethnocentrism and Eurocentrism - most of the top players and regions were either Chinese or Western/European, with most of the good guys being from these two regions too. Not sure how to feel about the portrayal of India in the last 10% too.
If you are looking for a sweet love story, you will be disappointed, because loveline is not the main point in this novel, people are busy struggling to live 🥴 even though the sugar is little, but it's quite good, every time Tang Mo and Fu Wenduo interact I scream like an ape out of the cage 🦧 But if you love a wild ride, a massive adventure through the end of the world, then jump in right away!
The creativity is extremely impressive, the bosses of the Black Tower games is not a three-headed, six-armed monster with a green face and yellow fangs but extremely familiar characters: Grandma Wolf, Mario, Pinocchio, Cinderella... but the boss's hobby is killing or eating people 🥴 Each game is very interesting, always curious how Tang Mo (and sometimes teaming with other people) will pass. . When you're reading this, make sure to prepare your braincells for the twists because the Black Tower loves to pit players, I extremely respects IQ and the tacit understanding between Tang and Fu in just one glance, for example, in Pinocchio's Honesty Game.
The cons is that sometimes I'm a bit bored with the fighting scenes and the loveline is too little, waiting for the two to be in a relationship like ages, there are some bugs (or I'm stupid? 😀). The characters are quite numerous but easy to follow, author also took the time to emphasize the rules and explain how Momo cleared the game. After Fu Wenduo realizing that baby Mo is the one he secrectly love, he flirts so obviously 🤣🤣 The ending is a bit abrupt and not very convincing, but quite satisfying.
I'd be dead by day 1. Maybe even sooner—once I spot those weird black holographic towers hovering all over the world and the government's all like 'oh, yeah, no idea what those are', I'm out of there.
This novel is a roller-coaster ride through an apocalyptic world where winning Battle Royale-style games is the only way to survive.
Now, these games... I mean mind games on steroids. The number of times I had to re-read just to grasp whatever Tang Mo was up to. How does one even begin to map out these games? I'm genuinely impressed by the complexity and the creativity it takes to weave something like this.
One of the highlights for me is undoubtedly the protagonist, Tang Mo. His pragmatic and somewhat detached approach to survival is refreshing; I love his no-nonsense attitude towards the world ending right in front of him. That, mixed with the glimpses of vulnerability we get from him here and there, makes him so endearing to me.
And his relationship with Fu Wenduo. There's an understated beauty in their subtle expressions of affection, in the deep understanding they have of one another. You can tell they belong together from moment one; their chemistry is unmatched.
For me, the relentless pace of action often comes at the cost of character development. I kept seeking a deeper exploration of the characters' psyches, wondering about their interpersonal dynamics, yearning for introspective moments. The world is ending, and I want to know what, why, and how these people feel.
Now, the conclusion of the novel feels fuzzy for me. I have so many questions left, and I need so much more info. I get it, and I can fill in the blanks, but I want more.
3.7/5 stars 🌟, but Bai Ruoyao gets one star, out of sheer spite (which I'm sure he'd revel in). Somehow, he managed to become my second favorite character????
I was debating myself if I should put 2 or 3 stars, but in the end I settled with 2 cuz it really could had been better.
Most of the games, which were the main point of the story, were pretty fun to read. Some of them were really complicated and I had to reread the explanations multiple times to understand them, but in the end they were entertaining.
Although, I think that the biggest problem were the characters. I couldn't really connect with anyone except maybe fu wensheng and ruo baoyao everyone else were pretty much really plain and I get that the game improved their mental and physical strength, but c'mon show a little emotion?
2025 update: the full novel was recently split into different editions on goodreads, this is a review for the entire novel. this was originally read in 2020
oh my god this was such a ride. i really appreciated the cast of interesting characters as well as the inclusion of likeable and strong female characters. some of the games were a bit confusing to me but the author described them in such detail so the readers could always be guessing ! the ending was a bit abrupt but i actually really liked the explanations and the rush i felt ! i can't believe it's over. though it wasn't perfect, it seems like a lot of thought was put into creating this world, the characters, and the games, and i could relish in it. the author crafted a genuinely interesting story that i'm glad i read. i'm thankful for the translator's work, for allowing me to experience this :)
i've finally finished this whopping 2,800 pages. i can already feel the book hangover coming because this was fantastic. it was grim, yet brimmed with humor. idk how many times a character/an object roasted the mc, but it was a lot of times. the narration also had some sarcastic, witty moments to it.
the plot was a lot of fun. the riddles and games of the black towers are really creative. the games took inspiration from many interesting sources, from myths and fairytales like Alice in Wonderland, Snow White to Mario to Santa to scientists like Schrodinger. it's an incredible range (not even omniscient reader can compare honestly). one of my fave moments was when Schrodinger promised to build santa a pure gold toilet if he killed the protagonists 😭😭seriously questioning what i read nowadays...
the games themselves were mindfucks thoo like i did not have enough braincells to even try and solve them.
and the characters!! there were a lot of them, still the characters did have a modicum depth but mostly they're the calm, poker-face types. some interestingly complex people - looking at 姓白的小朋友 who is irritating but intelligent, seemingly shallow, yet strangely loyal; or 慕回雪, who was thought to be a cold-blooded killer, yet fundamentally a kind person.
the romance is subtle, but develops beautifully. they're kinda emotionless for the most of the books, even when admitting they had crushes on each other, but their relationship gets sweeter, especially in the tiny ways where 傅聞奪 supports, trusts, and protects 唐陌 unquestioningly.
and perhaps one of the best parts of the book is the irony. not only for comedic effect, but the irony about the truth of the black towers.
but there are still unanswered questions. what, or who is 夏娃(Eve)? i assume eve refers to the eve of 'adam and eve'. but her(?) existence/origin was never explained and now we'll never know. still got some questions about the towers and their origins as well.
another thing is the cantonese....it's a bit off. 慕回雪 says 你又殺我(you're killing me again) when it should be 你又殺唔到我 (you can't kill me)

this novel is so good, i feel the tension the entire time because of all the deadly games! i especially loved the games since it also let the readers think of how to solve them. i always enjoy a book when i not only have to read it but i need to use my mind as well. i also love the slow and steady romance between tang mo and fu wenduo. it's a subplot and can be considered as the delicious side dish, the attack games being the main dish. this novel has great supporting characters as well!! now i'm getting more into unlimited flow novels more than ever!!
Wow, this novel is fantastic! It's challenge my brain and it's gave me non-stop thrills! The idea, the plot, the characters, the ending, were all satisfying!
The romance, though it's painfully slow but it's worth it. From the small gestures, the subtle flirt to the confession, all gave me that butterfly in my stomach.
The first time I added it to read on another platform, I told myself that it would be one more, a boring one with a cliché plot, and that it would not happen, but one late boredom, I saw her and said why not? .I began to read it without imagining the scenarios a lot, because I had no big expectations, but since the first Mc game appeared, THAT WAS AGAINST mosaic, I told myself that it is not any novel, and suddenly I found myself wanting to know more about the monsters of the Tower that until that moment seemed tender and harmless, but then that was not the situation. It was like opening my head and giving me a bucket of cold but light water, which can pass us and pleasantly to the splendid work and light aesthetics of Mochen Huan I could experience a very intelligent fictional reality that goes beyond all the novels that I have led, I can say that there were not many, that is why this work surprises me how well done and structured the games, thanks to this novel I could know about Schrodinger's cat, besides it is a danmei, at first I also added it by the premise of the scenes bl, but none of that was necessary, the games and the chemistry of the characters, I fell in love, Tang Mo, FU wenduo will miss them soy spanish too La primera vez que la agregue para leer en otra plataforma ,me dije que seria una mas, una aburrida con una trama cliché , y que no pasaría de eso , pero una tarde aburrimiento , la vi y dije porque no?
This was fun to read. I needed more from the characters and plot points But i also do get why it isn't because if the author had attempted that this would be well over 3500 pages. Mo Chen Huan def has a galaxy brain and the way they twisted famous fairytales and games to fit their story is just really impressive. This Web Novel is very much plot-driven so if you want character motives and insight (or even developements if im being honest) this might not be the web novel for you.

I just HAD to reread this novel, I missed it so much (ಥ﹏ಥ) It's so god damn good! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH(۶ꈨຶꎁꈨຶ )۶
I'll probably reread this for the fourth time once I forget everything lol. I'll maybe come back in a year or so(?)
I have decided to add some more things to this review, because during the first/second read, I was too busy squealing and not paying attention to the details XD

—Chapter 210
This is currently my second most favourite novel of all time, and one of the four danmei novels that I would rate 5/5(most of them are 4.5 I just rounded it up) this novel is just absolutely... Phenomenal, Astonishing, Incredible, Extraordinary. .. I can't describe it with mere words, I don't think my vocab can even bring out a tenth of how amazing this masterpiece is... But I guess I'll try my best...?
So black towers appeared all over the world and there are 4 types of instances(?): Normal instances, Special instances, Reality instances and Assembly instances.
You cannot die in normal instances, most of them are generally safe.
Special instances, are like what the name implies, they are special. They appear randomly and are very dangerous, and you can die in them. The rewards you get from clearing Special instances are(most of the time) really good, so, most people who are confident in their strength will challenge them.
A Reality instance is when a black tower boss comes down to earth, like the special instances, they are very dangerous and result in a lot of deaths. The rewards obtained from reality instances are, once again, generally very good.
An Assembly instance is when the black tower make an announcement to all players(in the region?) the location of an assembly instance and the time it starts. All players must go to that location at the given time to trigger the instance, all players who trigger the assembly instance are pulled into the same game. Assembly instances are not safe, but not dangerous either, as long as you don't die during the duration of game, even if you fail the main mission, you won't die, you will just be pulled into another game and won't be able to leave until you complete the mission(?)
There are also Tower Attack Games in different 3 modes, Handicapped mode(?), Normal mode and hard/difficult mode. There are 7 floors in the black tower, so you will have to clear 7 tower attack games~ Tower Attack Games are the most dangerous type of game, but the props and rewards are by far the best.
Black Tower bosses are literally as the game implies, bosses of the black tower. Some are weak but some are strong. Some of them are famous fairytale characters e.g Grandmother Wolf, Snow White, Cinderella, Pinocchio, Queen of Hearts. Some of them are not, e.g Santa Claus, Grecia Sykes, Mario, Mosaic, Schrodinger.
There are three types of players, Official players, Reserve players and Stowaways(I won't say the last type here, cuz it counts as a spoiler(?))
Official Players are players who have won a black tower game during the three days.
Reserve Players, are lucky af and just won a random game during the three days(because their opponent said they were eliminated(?))
Stowaways are players who have killed someone during the three days.
Tang Mo(MC) , the author could of made him just like another one of those mc's, who suddenly became op from chancing upon an op prop/system/weapon etc, from those stupid cliché shounen manga's but he/she decided not to, and I love that(well it IS a bit far-fetched that he went from a normal librarian in Suzhou to one of the strongest people on earth, but, whatever). Tang Mo is definitely strong, but he's not the strongest, he's smart, but not the smartest, he is a balance between brains and brawl. I especially love him and his ability baby(book) the notes were so funny😭
Fu Wenduo(ML), I love his interactions with Tang Mo so, so, so much! \(≧▽≦)/ He's probably the strongest stowaway in the world(?) He is also really smart but in a more open minded kind of way, he and Tang Mo think in different ways, so they fill in each others gaps maximising the 1+1=2 effect! At the start he and Tang Mo weren't hostile towards each other but they also definitely couldn't be considered friends, but they slowly 'figured' out who the other person was, making the perfect end result!🤧
Fu Wensheng, he is mature for his age and is Fu Wenduo's little cousin, he can make water that has healing properties. Fu Wesheng was honestly really just there for comic relief, and he is literally an innocent baby😌
Chen Shanshan, is definitely wayyyyyyy too intelligent and mature for her age. She is only a teenager, but already has too carry so many burdens on her shoulder. She is probably the smartest person in the novel, maybe second only to Luo Fengcheng? I think her ability makes up for that gap though.
The romance is very subtle and slow burn, I swear throughout the whole novel the main couple only kissed 3 or 4 times, but the genre is unlimited/infinite flow, so that's to be expected.
The 2 things I'm triggered about is, 1) that the author made China so op(if you get what I mean). 3/4 of the strongest players on earth are all from China, with the last 1/4 from Europe and the USA. What about everywhere else that isn't China, Europe or the USA? Like come on! Are you really just going to make all the other countries and continents Canon Fodder!? 2) Who/what is Eve?! The author still hasn't explained this part yet(?!)
I guess everything below this part is going be spoilers(?) so...
Yeah so I didn't mention before but there is a four type of player, the unlucky people, the “Returnees”. I can't be bothered explaining about the time leader board and Returnees, so just read it yourself😉
“The silver knife flashed and this moment was brighter than the moonlight.” — Chapter 231
I AM NEVER GOING TO GET OVER THE FACT THAT MU HUIXUE DIED AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
When she first appeared, I figured that she might die, but, I soon became too attached to her to let go!!! Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!? Mu Huixue, the author only made her as a sacrifice and plot twist, from beginning to end her only purpose was, number 1) dying to resurrect Bai Ruoyao, and number 2) being a plot twist. When she died I was happy and sad at the same time. I was happy cuz I knew Bai Ruoyao was getting resurrected but I was also sad cuz she's dead. I loved her, she was the cool and bad@ss female character we all needed. Gone just like that...I just can't believe it... I want more of Mu Huixue, I want to see her back story...pleaseeeeeeeee AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!??!??!?? Also, I can't believe her little sister imagine trying to kill her, she deserved death! But still.... WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY whyyyyyyyyyyyyy.... Just... Why?
Bai Ruoyao, you could say that he's kinda like the 2nd ML? Man, I hate this guy so much but I love him so much at the same time! What is this feeling? When he “died” I didn't know what too say, like I was so shocked, I always wanted him to die but when he actually died I was sad! WHAT IS THIS??? Bai Ruoyao is the type of person who hides his feelings behind that disgusting smile, he is always dancing on the fragile string named death, he is afraid of death, but likes dancing on it, it was mentioned in the novel that dancing on death made him feel like he was alive. I want to know why he does all those things, why he likes dancing on death, and why the heck he is so lucky!!! I want a back story for Bai Ruoyao too!!!! I also want a Bai Ruoyao x Mu Huixue CP!!!!!! Am I being too greedy? I'm sorry, but Deer x Fly CP is just too tasty!!!!
The review would take too long if I wrote about all the side character so, I just want to say, all members of Attack, Nanjing(Strategy)Group, Tian Xuan and anyone I've forgotten, thank you for making this novel the way it is.
Before I finish this review I just want to say... Holy Moly that papapa was abstract af! Here is a tiny segment of it,
“The shadows of the trees danced, the pistols were loaded and the bed shook steadily as they were fired.” —Chapter 210
As abstract as it is, I know you enjoyed it, you can't lie to me😏 go to chap 210 to read the entire part, thank me later~
started reading bc everyone's been saying it's a masterpiece, i also saw it was horror and unlimflow, got my expectations so high. a few chapters in, i did not like it, but everyone keeps saying it'll get better, it's so good read until the end....so i persisted ^^ there is ZERO horror, and the games were boring :/
i like the unlimflow genre a LOT, i love immersing myself in the story and think along + analyzing the games with the characters, but this does not even give you a chance to think at all. every single time it will describe some random jumbled rules, all of a sudden they had some typa "glanced in tacit understanding" and then its done? im reading to think ALONG WITH YOU, not the shitty ass explanation that didnt even make sense
the conflicts were annoying as hell too, its like the author is trying so hard to make something happen and keep the story going, but it has no correlation, doesnt even make sense and just ends up pissing me off. an example i can point out is that motherfucking bai ruoyao. the storyline's been trying to kill him off SOOOO bad, but there's always something happening before the final blow. are you kidding me? it's not even fun to read it's just straight up disappointing. another one is the 'returnees', what the fuck was that? came out of buttfuck nowhere and it looked like the author was trying so hard to keep the story going
the characters were also unseasoned chicken. almost ZERO personality, except bai ruoyao and the top 1 returnee. didnt love anyone at all. the couple was so boring too, i dont mind slowburn, but it's literally burning me with rage from how dull and forgettable they are.
i tried so hard to like it, i went in with really high expectations up until the middle when it just got super annoying, then i just gave up. it's just not good, i still continued hoping something will happen, but it just got more and more irritating. it's baffling how this utter madness of an awfully written dogshit novel has so many fans.
dont even know why i still trusted the people saying it'll get better, spoiler alert: it didnt. in the end i finished until ch.200. no interesting parts. never again
absolutely fucking horrible trash. im embarrassed to even admit that i've read something as trash as this 😬 if teio has no haters, im gone.
I enjoyed this SO MUCH. Oh my god. I had so much fun tearing through all 245 chapters of this webnovel over the past two weeks. It's not perfect, but I had such a good time reading it.
Whoever pitched this as "Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint but gay," heart eyes directly @ you.
Where to start? The Earth is Online is the first webnovel I have read and the first community-translated Chinese novel. It was recommended by a friend I pestered to find me something to get me a sense of the litrpg genre. This is hence a newbie review, possibly of limited use to an aficionado of Chinese webnovels. • It's loooong. Like, 780,000 words long. It didn't feel padded out at all - the pacing is tense and keeps you moving, but at I think 18-20 hoursish of reading, it is a long time to spend immersed in such a dark reality. I am aware that for a webnovel, it is pretty short, which just makes me... • It's *very* dark. And yet upbeat. Which is kinda confusing a lot of the time. I mean, millions of bodies are piling up, and yet, young love! Broody young men are drawn to each other by a common agreement that killing is ok if it is to avoid your own death. Also... • It's funny. The humour is funnier because the style is so deadpan - 'this is supposed to be funny isn't it?' is a pretty common thought, and the characters are definitely not in on the joke. Especially the romance, which had me actually laugh out loud at times. • The games are amazing. Mo Chen Huan is gobsmackingly clever, and the 'games' constitute mini-puzzles that are impossible really for the reader to work out but feel like they should have been easy when revealed, which is a lovely intellectual thrill. The novel is an ode to games and game culture, and this never feels shortened or compromised. There are some nice nods to maths (although the novel's forays into science were best forgotten) and basic physics (the use of Schrodinger's cat was both cute and clever). There are some really big ideas in the novel, which are buried rather than shown off, but none the less impactful for that. • The characterization is really engaging. I must confess to missing Tang Tang, and Fu Wenduo, and Shanshan and the others. The length gives the character development time to breathe, and the book ends up with a strong intimacy with these people who have survived so much. The humour plays strongly to this, as you end up knowing the characters well enough to predict their reactions, which is lovely, and also makes the games tenser. • The translation is quickly done, and very straightforward. There are some advantages to this - I was reading quickly due to a smaller vocab pool. I missed adverbs though - they came along so rarely, like swooping gifts. • I don't think I'd be up for reading a lot more - the length combined with the more limited vocab/style makes it a place I would visit rather than live. But I have to confess to actually enjoying the hell out of most of this experience, and I would unhesitatingly recommend The Earth is Online into the future.
¡Y no me arrepiento!
I would definitely die if the Earth went online - I have never played any games. While reading the novel, downloaded some from Google play - I need to be ready just in case! And also need to start running in case of zombie apocalypse. 3.5
The book was quite lengthy.... but I guess it was kinda necessary for the world building. Alot of the word count was also writer trying to explain all the game mechanics, plots, loopholes etc etc
However as much as this book was good, I can't help but to think of another book as I was reading this (KOD). The book was so good that it overshadowed this one.
Imo, it was pretty draggy especially for the first 1/3, got exciting in the next 1/3 and definitely climaxed at the ending. It's good, but not to the extent of re-reading?
Like the interactions in the book though. And wish the fluff was incorporated earlier :(
[Review on 21 May 2024, not sure why it was drafted]
Rating: 5/5- Thought provoking, action packed and wonderfully memorable!
The Earth is Online is definitely deserving of the high ratings and rave reviews. It’s captivating, thrilling and depicts humanity at its finest and its worst. The plot is clever and the characters are wonderfully brought to life.
No character is perfect but even the most annoying humans and bosses find a way to creep into your heart or memory. The usage of universally recognised characters and ruthless behaviour with mild comedy in between made this intriguing, gripping and satisfying.
I must be honest, many of the games made no sense to me even when each reached its conclusion but it was interesting. The BL element in this story is so minimal that it is basically non-existent in the novel, but the novel in itself is spectacular! (There are like 3 kisses at best in the whole story). Also you don’t really feel like it’s a bad thing that there’s no romance coz they are surviving the end of the world- like there’s no time for romance. Whatever little romance exists is satisfying and sweet and very realistic!
Before Global University Exam and The Earth is Online I wouldn’t really count myself as a horror reader, but these two books have definitely opened up a new door of wonders for me. I’m certainly looking forward to more horror BL (with hopefully a bit more of a romance element)
The story ends on a really bittersweet note for some reason, maybe because of the dreary reality and the heartbreak many of the characters live through. It just got me thinking that if I had to experience the end of the world in a similar manner would I survive? (I highly doubt it coz I’m weak AF)
My one complaint was that the ending should have been a few chapters longer. There were some plot holes and it felt very rushed when concluding the black tower saga. A bit more interpretation would have nicely closed the story. I just felt a little whiplashed when it came to the real secret of the black tower. Also- what happened with Eve’s Apple?
This is an incredible read that you will never forget. Highly recommend reading this for a spectacular plot about the human spirit.
