It was while reading the fourth page of this book that I realized it is going to become my new comfort book. And I'm sure it will become yours too. This is the story of Joy and Ollie, two different creatures who meet and embark on a spiritually rewarding journey. This story is narrated by a storyteller who keeps sharing his comments in between. And it is these comments that I found the most comforting.
Here are a few of them: -
🐢"We, as a society, as a collective whole, constantly feed each other with messages of what a perfect life should look like...We are given timelines to follow and a yardstick to measure our success...We are programmed into slumber. Our inner light dims and we are left wondering why we don't feel good about ourselves anymore...
At some point in my life, when I realized that the journey was not about becoming anything but, in fact, about unbecoming all that was not me, that was the day I became a storyteller. "
🐢"Haven't we all, at some point, felt heartless and numb?... Emotional numbness is our reaction to the fear of feeling pain again. But when we block out pain, we block out life itself! We block out happiness and the possibility of transformation."
🐢"When a series of incidents and setbacks in our life start to break us, it's a time of grace and transformation."
🐢"Don't we all, at some point, feel the world does not understand us? We start to develop a few core beliefs that become our reality..."
This book is about the unusual journey of Joy and Ollie, a man and a turtle respectively, both of whom had their setbacks and grief. At the beginning of the story, we get to know about the tragic turn Joy's life took. Will he ever be able to find true happiness and contentment in a world that overwhelms him? Will meeting Ollie help him address his grief and transform?
It's a beautiful book! There's so much that I've underlined in this book that I will have to make a separate post just for the quotes. I have never felt so seen while reading a book before. It felt like I was discussing my life and emotions with a wise friend who I could trust.
“When we are told a story, it’s no coincidence! The story always chooses the person it wants to be told to. There is always a divine plan and a time to hear it. You know Joy, the same story may be told to several people, but each will have something different to take from it.”
And this book proved it as well.
Interestingly, just before I started writing this review, I was reading ‘The Greatest Indian Stories Ever Told’ where Arunava Sinha, in his foreword, talked about how stories and legends came to be. Yes, over time, they have been twisted by people but they do have their origins in reality.
Living the city life, we have hollowed ourselves of our roots and lead a highly mechanical and logical life with no faith in magic or supernatural. Why has it become difficult to believe in something as pure as dreams? This is the story of Joy, who went from being an investment banker to a believer.
When Joy returns from London to his hometown, Goa; he becomes addicted to alcohol and things spiral further downwards with the death of his mother and his wife’s adultery. In an attempt to get rid of his anger, Joy goes to the oceanside where he ends up falling in a boat. And then his life changes forever.
In those tumultuous waters, Joy meets Ollie – a turtle whom he befriended in his childhood. Ollie is also on his own mission, the task that as been allotted to him by the sea – to keep Joy safe.
Thus, amidst nature, Joy experiences elation and despair, gain and loss. He comes face to face with the beasts of the sea and discovers life anew. And with him, I too started believing a little more…
An extremely sweet and enlightening book, this is somewhere a mixture of Life of Pi and The Alchemist (which were probably true stories as well). If you like such themes, then Arribada is for you…
Arribada is a wonderful book about a man named Joy and his turtle Ollie who are on a spiritual quest they are both unaware about. This book made me realise how important nature is, not just for our survival but also for our wellbeing. The story is so deeply rooted in natural settings that one can smell the sea and the forest through it’s pages.
Ollie and Joy are two souls from different worlds who don’t speak each other’s language but learn truths of the world and power of love when they are both lost at sea.
This book comforted me when I needed it and how could it not when the characters are old men, little children, lions and whales?
Nothing is truer than a friendship between animals and humans and nature. Arribada is a commentary on that and on the power of destiny and the friendships and relationships universe brings us unexpectedly.
There are many layers to reading this book, from the POV of eco-criticism, spirituality and of course for the simple joy of a good fiction.
The book is 350 pages long and while I loved the most of it I found it getting extremely repetitive towards the end. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this book to readers of every level because you cannot miss out on the adventures of Joy and Ollie.
Arribada is the book you take with you on a vacation and the one that brings vacation to you when you desperately need to travel but cannot leave the shackles of your 9-5. You won’t just read it you’ll meditate with this book and you will heave from things you don’t talk about.
Kochharr blurs the boundaries between genres, it’s fiction, self-help and a comfort book all at the same time.
I still feel like walking with Joy and Ollie and watching their story unfolding in front of my eyes. Love no matter what, and accept the imperfections of your perfect life—indeed a privilege to read this book.
Arribada, or the arrival by the sea, is a poignant story about acceptance, survival and surrender. Using a metaphorical title to indicate the arrival of Ollie, the turtle, as well as the arrival of inner peace, the author weaves the complicated, often weak and dilapidated, threads of life together in the fabric of this journey that promises heartbreak, hope and love for self in the end.
Joy, an eccentric and lonely man, desires creature comforts but not at the cost of his happiness. After successfully landing a handsome job and marrying the love of his life, he settles in London. But as he witnesses his dream unfold, he’s unable to come to grips with reality and monkey-wrenches any opportunity that comes his way. Leaving his wife behind, he goes back to India to take care of his ailing mother, only not to return to his love. Thus, he is left alone after his mother's demise. Enter Ollie, his mate from a different world, who helps Joy realize the meaning of his name. Ollie, in spite of not being able to understand his human friend, proves to be a loyal friend and a patient listener. Together, they swim through the high tides.
Written passionately, this story throws light upon relationships, their fragility, their demands and their repercussions. It also highlights the importance of silence and understanding. The bond between Joy and Ollie is like one might have with their pet. But Ollie is much more than just a turtle. He's Joy's safe haven too. Even though I found the writing style quite elementary (in terms of creative flair and expression), the story kept me hooked from cover to cover. So, that's a win!
It's not easy to write outside your comfort zone and with Ollie's character, the author has done justice to what value it holds in the story. Comprehensible narrative without verbose descriptions of minor things help the readers keep a tight hold on the story. Even though the events are cohesive and do not compel you to do a double take, there's a genuine sincerity in what Joy does or wants to accomplish. Hence, the palpability significantly increases.
Overall, Arribada has been an interesting story to read and should be given a try. I could not finish it in 2-3 days because this plot needed time and patience to devour it.
This is a story within a story. A storyteller tells the story of two spirit souls, one turtle, the other a man. Ollie and Joy - their source being a beach in Goa. Ollie was almost killed at birth when the infant Joy makes him his friend. Time pass and Joy reaches adulthood and success. However as is human life, Joy s first child dies and that marks the start of detoriation in his life. The other most significant person in his life , his mom passes away too, Joy s wife leaves him for Anthony. Bad habits, negativity and alcoholism embraces Joy s entire life. Joy is about to be drowned on his father s old boat when Ollie finds him again. Ollie is guided by the sea spirit on a mission to take Joy to Africa. On this dangerous sea path both Ollie and Joy encounter troubles not known and bond with one another with several life realizations. When Joy finally reaches Africa he s a changed man but one night after many days of peace he sucuumbs to alcohol again. As he loses himself again Ollie is informed of being the 'Wise one' of his tribe. Ollie goes onto his journey while Joy is saved by the Masaai tribe. Sironaka a wise man of the tribe takes him in and gradually brings him onto a good life again. With the tribe Joy finds meaning to life again and embraces his past like never better. Joy later returns to Goa to complete a cycle. This books teaches you all about second chances and how life is never about giving up. Once determined the universe will take you through your cycle, how we live it, is definitely ours to see. The man animal connection is also elucidated really sincerely here and takes on beautiful manifestation. There is a lot to learn about embracing life and dissecting the little moments to get clarity. Except maybe a few portions which seemed over lengthy to me, this is a book worth reading!

ARRIBADA: The Arrival by Samantha Kochharr is a story of love, friendship, self- desicovery and a bundle of emotions.
The two main characters of this book are Joy and Ollie and it is heartwarming to read about their journey. Though they are from completely different backgrounds, the way they became so important to each other and turn into life-long friends is something that makes this book a comforting and insightful read.
The man animal connection is described so beautifully and effortlessly. This book teaches the readers to embrace the life, to be grateful and fullfill their responsibilities.
All this story of Joy and Ollie is being narrated by a storyteller in the book to a group of audience. Whenever this storyteller interacts with his audience while narrating the story, he tells some of the best lines that the readers may have never heard or read. There's not even a single moment when I felt that there was interruption or break from the main plot while the storyteller is doing this. This is not an easy thing to do and the author did an amazing job.
The character development and the narration is unique and will keep the readers hooked till the end.

The story follows Joy and Ollie, two characters from vastly different backgrounds, as they navigate through their personal struggles and come to understand the truths of life.
One of the strengths of this novel is its ability to seamlessly weave together different cultural perspectives. The author does an excellent job of capturing the essence of the Maasai village in Africa, and the reader can feel the sense of community and tradition that is so central to the people who live there. The contrast between Joy's life in London and her experience in Africa adds depth to the story and provides a unique perspective on the human condition.
The characters in this novel are well-developed and relatable. Joy's journey from a high-powered job to a handyman in a small village is both heart-wrenching and inspiring. Ollie's slow lane of life and his search for meaning and purpose is a reminder that we all have our own paths to follow. The interactions between Joy and Ollie are genuine and heartfelt, and the reader can't help but root for them as they navigate the challenges that come their way.
The themes of this novel are universal and timeless. The author explores the importance of letting go of false beliefs and opening our hearts to love and trust, and the impact it can have on our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. The book also delves into the concept of inter-connectedness, reminding us of our place in the universe and our responsibility to care for the environment.
Overall, ARRIBADA: The Arrival is an engaging and thought-provoking novel that will leave the reader with a deeper understanding of the human experience and the power of love and connection. The author's ability to seamlessly weave together different cultural perspectives and the well-developed characters make for an enjoyable and enlightening read. Highly recommended for readers who enjoy fiction that explores the human condition.
✨Arribada The Arrival” is a deeply reflective narrative that explores one man’s profound journey of self discovery and transformation amidst life’s relentless challenges. The story centers on Joy, a Goan man who, despite a seemingly perfect shaped by societal norms, finds himself grappling with an overwhelming sense of disillusionment and emotional numbness. The book sets the stage by depicting Joy’s initial retreats to a secluded beach, highlighting his yearning for peace and understanding in a world that often leaves individuals feeling “insecure and worn out” and questioning their own well-being.
✨As the narrative unfolds, Joy is propelled into a series of unexpected circumstances that force him to confront his inner world. He develops a unique and pivotal relationship with an unlikely companion from the natural world, which serves as a catalyst for his profound personal growth. This bond, alongside interactions with other remarkable characters and creatures, introduces him to deeper understandings of life, resilience, and the interconnectedness of all beings. The story emphasizes how diverse perspectives and ancient wisdom can illuminate pathways to healing and self-acceptance, even in the most challenging times.
✨The book thoughtfully explores universal themes such as the unpredictable nature of grief and healing, portraying difficult experiences as opportunities for “grace and transformation” rather than punishment. It delves into the nuances of loneliness versus a more grounded state of aloneness, and consistently underscores the importance of intuition, dreams, and embracing one’s imperfections as crucial elements for personal alignment.
✨Ultimately, the book offers a compelling and insightful exploration of the human spirit’s capacity for renewal. It suggests that profound personal change often requires stepping outside one’s comfort zone and engaging with life’s unpredictable elements. The narrative leaves readers with a sense of hope, demonstrating that even through immense difficulty and perceived failure, one can achieve a deeper understanding of themselves and the world, eventually finding a path towards joy and a more authentic existence.
If you're looking for a book that will have you laughing and crying at the same time, then Arribada by Samantha Kochharr is the book for you! Who knew that a man and a turtle could have so much in common? The unlikely duo of Joy and Ollie take you on an adventure that is both heartwarming and hilarious.
The book is filled with deep and meaningful quotes about life and transformation, but let's be real, the real star of the show is Ollie the turtle. His slow and steady pace throughout the book is a perfect reminder to slow down and enjoy life, even in the midst of chaos and grief.
As someone who has also felt like the world doesn't understand them, I found myself nodding along to the author's words of wisdom. But let's not forget the real reason we're all here, to find out if Joy ever finds true happiness and contentment! The journey Joy takes from living in London with a high-powered job and a loving family, to losing everything and becoming a handyman in a small Maasai village in Africa is both relatable and inspiring.
The setbacks and grief that Joy experiences are all too familiar to anyone who has gone through their own share of struggles. But what sets this book apart is the way in which the author weaves in themes of grace and transformation. Joy's journey may not be an easy one, but with the help of Ollie and a wise tribal elder, he begins to discover the power of the universal energy that heals all.
As Joy unlearns falsehoods and discovers the truths of life, Ollie also finds a friend and the real meaning of existence. The way in which the author brings these two characters together is both heartwarming and unconventional. But it is the way in which their friendship grows and evolves throughout the book that truly captivates the reader.
Overall, Arribada is a beautiful and unique story that will leave you feeling inspired and entertained. So go ahead and add it to your reading list, you won't regret it! Whether you're looking for a book to make you laugh, cry, or simply ponder the meaning of life, Arribada has something for everyone.
“Ancient wisdom says that guilt and regret are two different experiences. Guilt keeps us in bondage and isolates us, while regret keeps us in the past. Both emotions are necessary. In the dark moments of the soul, we start our search for the truth. These moments helps us introspect about what went wrong, what was humanly and realistically possible and what was not, and also our emotional response to it.”
What a profound book! A story in a story with impeccable characters and an enlightening message!
Arribada is a Spanish word meaning arrival by the sea. As it pertains to this book, it conveys the arrival of peace, solace, and spiritual awakening.
This is a beautifully woven tale about Joy, a human being, and Ollie, a turtle. The novel follows Joy’s journey who is a successful yet broken man. His marriage isn't functioning well and he has to suffer from his child's death.
It’s getting worse every day until he returns to his village in Goa, Galgibaga. He meets his lost friend Ollie there. Ollie becomes his devoted listener. Ollie understands Joy when no one cares for him. And Ollie takes him on a journey toward enlightenment.
To be honest, the setting in this novel is on a completely different tangent. There are sea creatures talking. They are helping each other. There are thought-provoking quotes. And most importantly, the lovely friendship between Joy and Ollie. Joy's journey serves as a powerful reminder that life can take unexpected turns. It is in these moments of vulnerability that one discovers the true essence of their being.
The story also provides an excellent means to virtually travel from Goa to Africa. Nature's vivid descriptions by the author are exquisite. As the story depicts oneness with the universe with the inclusion of so many wild and sea creatures, it beautifully emphasizes the interconnectedness of all living beings and the profound impact of the natural world on human existence.
It’s a poignant, comforting, spiritual, healing, and inspiring read. I loved it a lot and recommend it to everyone.
Arribada The Arrival is a beautiful, magical and enlightening book written by Samantha Kochharr. From living in London with a high-powered job and a lovely family, to losing everything and becoming a handyman in a small Maasai village in Africa, Joy wades through happiness, grief, loss and despair; while Ollie swims in the slow lane of life. As they unlearn falsehoods, they discover the truths of life. Helped by the wind, the sea and an indigenous tribal elder, Joy experiences the power of the universal energy that heals all. Ollie finds a friend and the real meaning of existence. I had a really great time reading this book it's really beautifully written. I simply fell in love with it. The writing is so engaging and magical. I also loved the concept like how it was basically like a story in a story and how the narrator interrupts the story to share his insights was nicely done (it didn't interfere the writing). Other than that this book has some really witty and thought provoking lines that will leave you thinking about stuff for a long time. Moreover the characters are so good especially the character development and journey of Joy and Ollie. Simply put this is one of those books that one should just devoured as it's lessons act as a guide in our journey of accepting, embracing ourselves, others and the world/life in general and moving forward. But let's not lose sight of the primary purpose of our gathering—to learn whether Joy ever experiences genuine joy and contentment!Arribada: The ArrivalArribada: The ArrivalArribada: The Arrival
The book's narration was fantastic. I remained engrossed throughout. The narration is split into two parts. Here, there are two storytellers: the author herself and a character who is telling the story to his audience within the book. The storyteller's daily visits and narration of the tale are incredibly lovely.
Joy and Ollie - Two souls from different worlds who don’t speak each other’s language. The Universe brings them together to embark on an unusual, unforgettable journey. Sometimes together, sometimes apart.
However, let's face it—Ollie the turtle is really the star of the show. The book is full with profound and thought-provoking lines on life and change. Even in the middle of upheaval and tragedy, his slow and steady pace serves as an ideal reminder to slow down and embrace life.
💡For those seeking greater comprehension and personal development, #arribadathearrival is a must-read.

When I picked this book the thing which attracted me was the cover and how flawless the cover is with a man sitting upon a tortoise. There is a different description of tortoise everywhere and I wasn't wrong is exactly something else here.

Arribada is a Spanish word for arrival and refers to mass nesting behaviour exhibited by marine turtles, especially by Kemp's Ridley and Olive Ridley sea turtles.
'What I have come to realize is that grief is messy and unpredictable; and it often spins out of control.'
Ollie experiences a life-threatening scare only to be saved by little Joy. Destiny had other plans when they meet again after several years in different circumstances. Joy contrary to his name experiences a bout of sadness when he loses his firstborn. This was the beginning of a series of unfortunate events like him falling prey to alcoholism after reeling with shock when his wife left him for another man.
Two strangers from different worlds, Joy and Ollie embark on a journey that finally culminated with them discovering the truth of life and the power which the all-encompassing universe holds. Both of them set on uncharted waters to find their purpose and interconnectedness with everything around them.
Narrated by an anonymous storyteller, the book shares indispensable insights on life and living. The descriptive writing depicting each and every action of nature connected me to it. The cultural shift between life in London and an indigenous village in Africa has been woven seamlessly into the story.
"But we carry on, because that's what the world tells us to do"
"Haven't we all, at some point, felt heartless and numb?...Emotional numbness is our reaction to the fear of feeling pain again. But when we block out pain, we block out life itself! We block out happiness and the possibility of transformation."
Arribada : The Arrival by Samantha Kochharr is not your normal go to book. Rather it is one of those thought provoking books that everyone should sit with once in their life. Overcoming grief and the power of love are phases we hear quite often. And yet we forget them in reality. The book showed these 2 main aspects for me through it's characters.
The choice of characters made me more amused and interested for one is a human while the other is a turtle. It made me realise we all are after all one in this universe.
The friendship of these two characters is narrated in this book by the storyteller. The human - Joy, has lost faith due to the tragedies in his life. He meets Ollie, the turtle, in Goa wherein they start the journey to Africa. It is this journey which will provoke you to sit with yourself and realise the the power of love and faith. The book shows the value of different cultures and their impact on us.
But the best part was the need for some second chance in life. It is a concept I'm still struggling with, but I guess it's a sign for me again and again to once try it.
Life when it happens, can turn a rude, obnoxious, condescending person into a humble spirit. I literally have goosebumps as I close this book, Arribada by Samantha Kochharr. This one is no ordinary story.
To put in author's own words, "Some of it sounds like a fairy tale, some like a movie script." And indeed it feels just that.
There have been quite a few books that have done wonders in the literary world and sent ripples in my life too. Arribada was one such book.
There can only ever be one Papillon, one Shantaram, one Life of Pi, one The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, one Riders to the sea, one Jonathan Livingston Seagull, and one Arribada!
The literature penned on the ocean/sea, mankind, animal love, life, death, spirituality is all packed in this one fable-like narrative.
Arribada is an ambitious novel that tries to explore grief, healing, and personal transformation, but it only partially succeeds. The story follows Joy and her interactions with a turtle and spiritual elements, moving between urban and natural settings. While the premise is interesting, the plot sometimes feels meandering, and the turtle—central to the narrative—lacks presence, which weakens the emotional impact.
The language is generally simple and accessible, with occasional lyrical lines that stand out, but these moments are scattered. The book touches on themes like shamanic energy healing and the guidance of the African wise man, yet these elements feel somewhat stereotypical and do not develop the depth the story seems to aim for.
In terms of content, the book introduces meaningful ideas and themes but handles them lightly, making the overall experience feel more surface-level than profound. Despite this, the story has some engaging moments and a contemplative tone that may appeal to readers interested in spirituality and reflection.
Overall, Arribada is an oka-ish read—thoughtful in parts but lacking consistent depth. It earns a 2-star rating for its ambition and occasional beauty, though it falls short of being truly impactful.
Joy and Ollie. Two souls from different worlds who don’t speak each other’s language. The Universe brings them together to embark on an unusual, unforgettable journey.
I loved the narration of the book. It hooked me till the end. There are 2 phases in the narration. We have 2 storytellers here—first, the author herself and second, a storyteller within the book who is narrating the story to his audience. The way the storyteller comes everyday and narrates the story is amazingly beautiful.
Highlights of the book -
1) Samantha’s understanding of emotions is mind-blowing. The expression of every human relations is depicted in the story.
2) The language is crisp and clear. Even a first time reader will able to read it easily.
3) The Glossary at the end of the book helps in understanding some new words and its meaning.
4) The storytelling is something unique and u can visualise yourself present in the story everyday.
5) The book is a calm read. Read this book with happyness and smile in your face.
6) The book is clearly 350+ pages, which is the only drawback I could pick, apart from this everything is fluent & excellent.
This book does an amazing job of explaining what grief is and how to get over it. Avoiding your traumatic recollections is not the answer. After acknowledging our suffering, we must move on. Life must continue!
The characters in this book are believable and well-developed. Both heartbreaking and uplifting, Joy's journey from a high-powered position to a handyman in a rural village. Ollie's slow-paced existence and his pursuit of meaning and purpose serve as a gentle reminder that each of us has a unique route to travel. Sincere and heartfelt conversations between Joy and Ollie make it impossible for the reader not to want to see them succeed in overcoming their obstacles.
A deeper awareness of the human experience and the impact of love and connection will be left with the reader after finishing ARRIBADA: The Arrival, an interesting and thought-provoking book. A fun and enlightening book, thanks to the author's skill in fusing together many cultural viewpoints and the well-developed characters.
🍂What is love !? Is it an emotion, feeling, magic, majestic, magical, healing, or something else !? We all have our definition of love yet all of them are correct. There is no such definitive explanation of love. It differs with people, yet the only thing that matters is the truthfulness and purity that two people offer.
🍂In the case of this title, healing is portrayed as an aspect of love. The bond which has no limitations, the couple showcased in the book doesn't share any similarities yet they are bounded and attracted towards each other by a greater force.
🍂Regardless of not understanding each other's language, they sail towards a journey of self discovery and healing leaving their usual lifestyles behind. In search of learning new perspectives, truth and understanding.
📌It's not so short yet a significant title, which shows the aspects of love, healing and self discovery. If you're interested in reading about love and healing, then this might be a good fit for your Bookshelf.
A journey through loss, love, and finding your way home. ♥️
Arribada is a deeply personal story about grief, healing, and self-discovery. It follows the author’s journey after losing her father, how she reconnects with herself through unexpected experiences, spiritual exploration, and emotional vulnerability. The story moves between memory and reflection, showing how love and loss can live side by side. The title “Arribada,” meaning the arrival of sea turtles returning home, beautifully mirrors that idea of returning to oneself after being lost for a while.
Anyone who’s ever lost someone or struggled to find meaning after pain should read this. It’s for those who want to understand how healing can be both emotional and spiritual, and how hope finds its way back even when it feels impossible. This book feels like a comforting conversation with someone who truly understands what it means to grow through loss.
“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away”.
The prevailing theme of the book concerns the life of 2 characters namely Joy and Ollie their former life at the beginning was replete with all that one may ask for, however, a taste of reality puts his life’s progression south. Further, the book has been divided into 29 chapters. The first chapter is titled “This called life” which begins by introducing the readers to Joey and his initial life. Reviewed in India on 29 January 2023 Every year, at the same place and time, thousands of female Kemp's ridley sea turtles come ashore to nest and lay their eggs on the beach. This mass nesting event is known as an Arribada, meaning “arrival by sea” in Spanish.
When I first read the title of the book Arribada, I was curious to understand how Joy and Ollie's story related to this phenomenon. Arribada is about their story, and more. It is about flow of the universal energy, trust and love in their purest form and ultimately healing.
The author has built very strong characters and spinned an interesting narrative around these characters. The story needs patient reading by those who love reading literary gems and books that delve deeper into human behavior.
