The only girl in a family of boys, Alice found her best friends between the pages of a good book. Snuggled in a warm quilt, she chased bad guys with Nancy Drew, nursed the sick with Cherry Ames, and honed her imagination with Anne of Green Gables. As a teenager, she discovered Harlequin romances and has been hooked on the genre ever since.

Always a history buff, Alice earned her B.A. from Queen's University at Kingston with a major in English and a minor in history, then went on to teach those subjects at a high school level. Over the years, her life took many twists and turns, with several career changes, but her love of romance and her belief in happy endings never wavered.

Now, happily married, she's living her best romance. With her husband and two cats she lives on beautiful Vancouver Island. When not spinning tales in front of her computer, she enjoys her garden, her needlework, music and the ocean view from her kitchen window. Alice is delighted to be able to combine her love of history and belief in happily-ever-after in her writing career.

Historical romance is not a genre I usually seek out, but I picked this book up on a whim after reading the description. What a wonderful story and cast of characters! Grey North is a compelling man with a mysterious past. Yes, he’s high-handed and arrogant, but also generous and charismatic with a wonderfully tender streak. Emma Douglas has a past of her own that she seeks to escape in the wilderness of Canada, leaving behind the high-society of San Francisco for the life of a simple schoolmarm. It was lovely to watch these two grow and find themselves (and love) on the frontier. I will definitely be picking up Alice Valdal’s other books!
