Splash: Poems About Water

Rate this book
Award-winning poet Constance Levy leads youngsters on a poetic exploration of how water runs through our daily lives.

Water runs through our lives; it is, in fact, essential to all life. And it takes many forms-it can be the liquid that quenches our thirst, the rain that pours from the sky, the juice of a ripe tomato, even a dramatic white tower in a polar landscape. These poems observe nature and also invite young readers to make observations of their own.

With Hurricane Harvey happening not to long ago, this book really touched home. Water has personally affected us in more ways that one. What a wonderful composition of poems to represent how water is intertwined in our daily lives. I enjoy poetry and this book is a collection of poetic writing detailing our water system, and the importance of water. This book was beautifully illustrated by David Soman’s watercolor illustrations to go along with the beautiful poem collection that flows from page to page. I believe my class would enjoy reading a couple of these poems every once in a while. I could possibly pick this poem up every rainy day and read a short poem out of the book. This book of poems can be used for a variety of things. I believe Levy does an amazing job throwing her poetry in with her education lesson and this also is a book I’d like to have in my classroom library.

Poetry (all about water)
4-6

The poems in this book are about water in some form or another, and they are basically short and easy to understand. There are some that are humorous, some that are serene and deep. They have decent illustrations, but the illustrations are not the reason for the book. The poems would be difficult for under fourth grade. It would be good to use as an example of a themed collection of works.

Text sets: poetry; earth science; water cycle;

This is an entertaining collection of poems about water. The poems are short, with topics that vary greatly: cooking, oceans, fog, rain, bathwater, etc. Many of the poems rhyme and are fun to read aloud. The black, white and shades of gray illustrations are somewhat sparse, but still help convey the essence of the poems. We enjoyed reading this book together.

I really enjoyed this book of poems about our watery world. The poems did not rhyme but the descriptions of different types of water such as Fog and Snowflakes were really beautiful and cute. The illustrations in this book were also excellant.
