Publié originalement en 1997 aux États Unis, Le contrat racial est un livre monument traduit en français pour la première fois. Le philosophe Charles W. Mills expose les failles du contrat social, qui est avant tout un contrat racial. Ce contrat a façonné le système de domination européenne qui fait exister les Blancs en tant que personnes à part entière et les non-Blancs en tant que sous-personnes. Charles W. Mills place la justice raciale au centre de ses analyses. Réfutant l’idée du contrat social, Mills évoque plutôt le contrat racial où l’ordre racial crée les assises de nos sociétés, la reconduction des privilèges et la domination.

La présente édition a bénéficié d’une nouvelle préface de l’auteur Charles W. Mills, rédigée à l’occasion du 25e anniversaire de la parution du livre. Le contrat racial est un incontournable. Les courants antiracistes contemporains doivent beaucoup à Charles W. Mills.

Charles W. Mills was a Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at The Graduate Center, CUNY. He worked in the general area of social and political philosophy, particularly in oppositional political theory as centered on class, gender, and race. He was the author of over a hundred journal articles, book chapters, comments and replies, and six books. His first book, The Racial Contract (Cornell UP, 1997), won a Myers Outstanding Book Award for the study of bigotry and human rights in America. It has been translated into Korean and Turkish. His second book, Blackness Visible: Essays on Philosophy and Race (Cornell UP, 1998), was a finalist for the award for the most important North American work in social philosophy of that year.

Mills received his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto, and previously taught at the University of Oklahoma, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and Northwestern University. He was the President of the American Philosophical Association Central Division for 2017-18. In 2017, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Je n’ai peut-être pas tout saisi car la philosophie n’est pas ma discipline, et j’aimerais relire cet ouvrage quand j’aurais davantage les armes pour le comprendre. Mais le propos sur le contrat racial qui est en vérité le contrat social est magistral. Un livre de référence.

Un llibre imprescindible, fet des de la filosofia, que per un cantó ens ofereix una revisió històrica i filosòfica del racisme, per després posar-nos davant del fet que, amb formes d'acord presumptament igualitari, seguim sient racistes i actuant de forma desequilibrada (els blancs), respecte a la gent que no ho és.
I finalment, amb propostes de camins de correcció. Senzillament imprescindible.
