Why Are You Like This?: An ArtbyMoga Comic Collection

Rate this book
A collection of comics with a millennial take on marriage, adulthood, pet ownership, self-love, and self-care.

Finally, comics that answer life’s most pressing questions: Is my partner actually upset or just hangry? Whose turn is it to remember the reusable shopping bags? Is it appropriate to put up Halloween décor two months in advance? (Spoiler alert: Yes. Yes, it is.)

“Opposites attract” has never rung truer when it comes to vivacious extrovert Meg and her level-headed introvert husband, Carson. Carson makes his coffee with only the finest locally roasted beans; Meg microwaves two-day-old joe. Carson is reserved and rarely opens up to friends; Meg ensures everyone in her life—including her mailman—knows about her hemorrhoid. From the joys of marrying your best friend to the bizarre musings of a twelve-pound pup to the humor and heartbreak of anxiety, Meg’s all-too-relatable comics leave no stone unturned. Dorky and downright hilarious, Why Are You Like This? explores what it means to make fun of oneself and find laughter in the little things.

Meg Adams

Meg Adams is a true blue “Valley Girl”—the Shenandoah Valley, that is. When she’s not herding kids, she’s herding cats, or gardening, knitting, or reading. You can find her many an afternoon reading on her shaded porch and waving to bicyclists as they crest the hill, or possibly picking tomatoes in the garden or peaches in the orchard. But in the morning, she’ll be writing. She lives with her husband, two sons and three cats in a hundred-year-old farmhouse, her other (continual) work in progress.

She also loves to hear from readers.

In a Nutshell: Pretty funny, though not outstanding. Matches the vibe set by the title. Includes quite a few serious/thought-provoking panels as well.

Meg and Carson, a married couple, are a case of ‘Opposites attract’. This collection of comics explores their lives as a couple, with extroverted Meg being weird and vivacious, and introverted Carson trying his best to understand his wife. Adding further spice to their lives are their two dogs Boedy and Luna, who have their own personalities.

As a “couple comic”, I thought that these would be similar to the work of Catana Chetwynd, who also chronicles and sketches her life with her “opposite” John. However, while Catana’s books have a more millennial new-couple kind of feel, Meg’s work comes more like that of a couple who already know each other well and have already learnt to accept each other’s eccentricities.

Furthermore, the focus is not just on Meg and Carson as a couple, but also on them as individuals. Even the two dogs get their own comic strips. Thus the result is quite a mix of comics. There are a few themes across some pages such as Meg’s passion for Halloween, but most comics are quite random. This could work against readers who are looking for a unifying theme across the collection.

The comics themselves are quite funny. Meg’s sense of humour, as is the case with most comic novelists, comes from being able to laugh at herself, and she doesn’t miss an opportunity to pull her own leg. Many of the comics were quite relatable.

A few of the panels focussed on social problems such as body shaming and animals affected by fireworks and so on. These appeared randomly in the book and were in the same art style as the funny strips. While I did love these serious topics (sometimes, even more than the funny ones), I think they took away from the voice of the book. When we are in a humour zone, seeing something serious breaks the flow of the fun.

I did not earlier follow this artist on Instagram so I was not aware of her art style. Sorry to say that the artwork left me with mixed feelings. The drippy-looking noses in about one-fourth of the panels were very distracting for me. (But my daughter, who read the book along with me, found them cute! So I guess this can be put down to individual taste.) At the same time, I loved how realistic the women were. No stick figures but curvy and proud of it.

All in all, this is a good one-time read. It didn’t stay in my mind after the last page but it offered enough fun while it lasted.

3.75 stars.

My thanks to Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for the DRC of “Why Are You Like This?”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

This was absolutely hilarious. I laughed out loud so much through this comic collection, especially because of how relatable it was—SO many panels made me think of myself and my spouse. 😂 I'd say you'll especially enjoy this if, like me (and Meg), you love rainy days, give zero fucks about decorum, and are obsessed with all things Halloween. 🎃 It may be February as I'm typing this review, but it's always October in my heart.

The above panel comes from an advance copy and may not match the final release. Thank you to the publisher for the review copy! All thoughts are honest and my own.

Yet another collection of webcomics about a woman in a loving and cutesy relationship with her husband. These cartoons with their "it's funny because it's true" vibe walk right up to the line of being too generic for their own good, but are just goofy enough in writing and art to stand out. I showed several to my daughter because they reminded me of her, and I like how the characters' noses change shape with their emotions.

What I Liked:
1. The art is good

What I Didn't Like:
1. I feel like I've seen this artwork before
2. Most of the jokes fell flat for me

Overall Thoughts:
As a fellow Meg (though I go by Megan) I can say we are all weird. I'd say she forgot to say how she's late to almost everything - because Megan's are always late to everything.

Book was cute. The relationship between Meg and Carson was heartwarming and sweet.

The artwork was entertaining. Reading the book went fast and I wasn't bored or felt like it was drawn out (get it?)

Final Thoughts:
I feel as though this book was "missing something". For the most part some parts were like "Yeah, that's funny or that's sad" , but it was just okay.

I'd love to see what else Meg Adams puts out next.

Recommend For:
• People that like comics
• Strong husband & wife teams
• Dog owners
• Halloween obsessed people

Content/Trigger Warnings: Depictions of mental illness, brief depictions of depression, brief mentions of anxiety

This was such a hilarious, fast paced, comic collection! I couldn't stop giggling and laughing, so much so that I disturbed my spouse while they were eating lunch. This is probably going to be one of my favorite comics of 2023 especially due to how much I related to so many panels in this collection. I will say, this comic collection has me wanting to read more. This was my first time reading anything by Meg Adams and I'm just going to say, new favorite author, hands down. I can't wait to read more Meg's work in the future!

Also, there's a plethora of BIPOC and queer side character, and the best part (in my opinion) is the plus size/fat and body positivity representation. I almost freaking cried seeing the younger to older mindset comparison over body image. That was probably one of my favorite panels that hit so close to my heart. If all of this hasn't pulled you in yet, if you're a lover of rainy days, Halloween goodness, love playing video games, and just appreciating the every day little things then I highly recommend picking this comic book up. It was just a fun, light hearted time!

Overall, this was a great read! I smiled, I giggled, my heart went all soft and mushy, this was just an all around lovely read. Again, I can't wait to read more by this author. It was such a fun time and I have no doubt any other collections from this author will be just as delightful!

Go through a year of comics or memes with a millennial couple and their two fur babies. The situations are funny and relatable. Meg is an extrovert and it plays off well with her introvert husband. I love her body drawings showing curves and imperfections. I am not familiar with the artist or her instagram page but I will become a follower. This is a fun and quick read available March 7, 2023. Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the temporary eARC in exchange for an honest review

ARC through Netgalley.

I think I've seen a few strips and panels of Adams' comics because I recognise the style, but I haven't read much. This was fucking funny and some comics made me laugh out loud. I really love the squishy style and how she doesn't shy back from making "ugly" faces or depict herself how she really looks like, thicc and with cellulite (like me <3).
She also captures mental health issues well, like anxiety and depression, as well as our shared fondness for Halloween-related spookery, our hatred for allergies and our utter goofyness.

Absolutely can recommend and I'm immediately gonna follow the artist on her socials.

Go check it out!

This book is a collection of comics by Meg Adams, who I have never heard from. Apparently she goes by the name of artbymoga. At first I thought there was going to be nothing I could relate to in this. The book was described as a millennial take on marriage, adulthood and pet ownership. Gag me.

But, as I started to read it, I found some comics I could relate to. Such as one where the main character thanks her father for giving her a double chin and bad hearing. (My daughter has thanked me for poor eyesight, and shortness, so I can relate). Or one where the dog, not wanting to be ignored, decides to step on the computer keys for attention. Or the pair of them looking at a Christmas tree, and the man saying “That’s going to be a pain to take down.” Yes, that I can relate to.

So, a cute collection of comics that are not outrageous, but with relatable to all sorts of comics.

If you follow artbymoga, then you probably would want this just to have it. For everyone else, it is a pretty good collection of life, and you don’t have to be a millennial to understand it.

Sometimes you need a good graphic novel/comic to cleanse your palette between more lengthy reads.

"Why Are You Like This?" had me chucking from start to finish.

This is an opposites attract graphic novel featuring the extroverted Meg and her introverted husband Carson.

Even if you're not married, you can still relate and enjoy a lot of things in this graphic novel. No, September isn't too early to start putting Halloween decor out. In fact, it's spooky season all year round around this neck of the woods. Cranberry sauce from the can is top tier. The heater is off because heat costs money, but that blanket is free.

It was a fun and cute time. Definitely worth the read!

Congrats to Meg Adams who accomplished something I don't come across very often: a book of comics that didn't feel one note, repetitive or tiring in one sitting. I think it's a difficult landing to stick for a lot of humorists/comics/artists who work like this in single page format. When you are reading them serialized or online you don't get the fatigue that comes from reading them compiled in a book like this where you start to see the cracks or find the habits the author leans on. I'm not saying Meg doesn't have tropes she enjoys (e.g. her dogs or husband), but at no point was it just a retread of the same punchline.

This managed to stay funny, engaging and warm throughout. Meg is both self-aware and self-effacing without it ever being grating. You feel like you're in on the joke with her and her husband Carson and it's really refreshing. - Highly recommended for a light, quick read that is certainly enjoyable in one sitting, but would be equally (if not more so) fun in doses throughout a week.

I would like to thank the publisher, Netgalley, and the author for the ARC of this book. I read an advanced copy of this book, so the final edition of the book might be slightly different. All thoughts and opinions are my own, as always.

I picked this up after being recommended it by a friend, and it was honestly super cute! It's a collection of comics that generally just span a page, and they cover a wide range of seasons, topics, and feelings. While I didn't necessarily love every one, most were quite funny/cute, with a few stand-outs! The art style also fits well with the content, making it all feel quite 'silly', but in a grown-up/more mature way. Overall, it was just really solid, and a lot of fun!

I feel like these sort of comics could be made into a really fun daily/weekly tear-off calendar, especially some of the seasonal comics! While I still enjoyed reading it all at once, this comic style feels more like something you should read a few pages of at a time, or see a themed page per day (it could also work as a coffee table book, for that reason!) It kind of felt like I burned through it (which I mean, I technically did), and I feel like spreading it out over time would make it more memorable and even more enjoyable!

Honestly, this should be called “Yeah Girl, Same” because …. Yeah girl, same. A fun collection of ARTBYMOGA’s work, a lot of relatable stuff, and I really enjoy her take on body positivity. I’ve been a reader for a long time and it’s really nice to see her art get a nice bind-up!

AMAZING!
I loved everything of this graphic novel/collection of comics! The drawings are so cute and funny, a bit Rick&Morty style at times, they really cheered me up! The gags are super fun and incredibly relatable, since me and my boyfriend have the exact same dynamics! I also appreciated the more serious pages about anxiety, self love, mental health: they are subtle and gentle, and make you think about significant stuff with a smile on your face anyway.

Hilarious and incredibly relatable with an unique style and colorful artwork. I've never heard of this artist before but their take on what millennials go through on a daily basis and the expectations vs. reality of being in a relationship amazed me. I personally related a lot to the allergies one and their passion for Halloween. Plus, the dogs sometimes became the stars of the show for me. They were so cute!!!
I'll definitely check out more comics from the author and go follow them right now!

Why Are You Like This? is a collection of comic strips which follows the lives of married couple Meg and Carson and their two adorable furbabies Boedy and Luna. While the collection doesn't have a direct storyline it is a charming insight into their everyday lives and their often idiosyncratic relationship.

It's often said that things are funny because they are true and that is definitely the case with WAYLT. I found myself absolutely chuckling with laughter at so many of the relatable panels and now have a mountain of screenshots which I will end up plaguing my husband with. There are too many this is us/me moments to send them all in one go!

On top of that the artwork is so cute and so realistic. Meg isn’t portraying your perfect blemish free protagonist and instead gives us a gorgeous girl who is comfortable enough to leave all her lumps, bump and whatever else hang out while making the ugliest faces she can pull. Also can we just have a moment to squeal at how cute those dogs are!!

Dr Seuss once said "We are all a little weird and life's a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it love" and I think that beautiful little quote sums up the essence of this gorgeous comic collection perfectly!

Why Are You Like This is published today by Andrews McMeel Publishing and I would urge you to pick it up if you want a fun little self-deprecating giggle.

In this comic collection we follow Meg, Carson and their dogs Boedy and Luna throughout a year. It's a really fun and relatable read, from being hot and sweaty in summer, to buying too much Halloween decoration just because you can. It's very quick and easy to read, plus some comics really made me ask 'why are you like this' or 'why am I like this'. I could've read much more, but at the end of the day it feels quite forgettable.

A cute, "opposites attract" graphic novel with great artwork and many funny moments featuring Meg (extrovert) and her husband Carson (introvert).

It was the read i needed to take a break from the lengthy books i read nowadays. I read it in one sitting and it wasn't boring at all. The relationship between Meg and Carson was pretty sweet.

A graphic novel definitely worth the read!

I wasn’t familiar with Meg Adams (artbymoga) prior to getting an advanced digital copy of this book but I did look her up on IG. These comics were cute and made me smile a few times but I don’t feel like I read anything “new” if that makes sense? Like I had the feeling these were all memes I’ve seen before, just not in cartoon format. There was no real flow to the book, just a new cartoon on each page. Some were relatable for sure. When I went to the IG page, it seems to me like almost all of the comics in the book have already been posted on IG, not sure if this compilation of her comics would appeal to already fans unless they wanted a book to flip through of their favourite ones?

Anyway, cute and was a super quick read. Thanks to netgalley for the arc.

This was a cute collection of comics about random, everyday life. The comics were very relatable. I even showed some to my fiance as I read that reminded me of things we had done/ talked about. I liked the art style and the comics that involved her dogs.

I had never heard of this artist before, but will for sure be on the lookout for more of their work!
