In this book, the author describes his six years with James Houck a 96 year old member of the Oxford Group. James was the last living link to the spiritual roots of the Twelve Step Movement. Since 1996, James Houch and Wally paton have taken thousands of people through the Four Steps of Surrender, Sharing, Restitution and Guidance to free them from the bondage of obsession and self-destructive behavior by establishing and maintaining a two way communication with the "God who speaks." In addition, they have shown over one hundred thousand people how to practice two-way prayer as described in the simple, four-page pamphlet titled "How To Listen To God".
Despite a lack of literary polish, I found this book life-giving and transformative. The concept of listening to God and writing down the thoughts He gives you in answer to prayer blew me away with its simplicity and power.
The book emphasized the need to review this guidance with a trusted friend whenever it seems unclear if the thought was really from God. But overall, I have found it and extremely helpful, practical approach to prayer.
This is a biography focused on the method of two way prayer explained in the book How To Listen To God by Cecil Rose. Mr. Rose wrote the primer. James Houck lived the primer. James acquired the pamphlet in the late 1930's and was a member of the Oxford Groups from 1935 thru 1937. As I write this Mr. Houck has been practicing the method of two way prayer for more than eighty years. His results with the method in the book have been astounding. He still swears by it. So this is an exploration of the experiences of one man's application of When Man Listens over a life time and the personal results—testimony of his outcomes which were confirmed by the author--Wally Paton. This book may one day become required reading in all 12 step programs as an extension of their eleventh step--"sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God." One hopes it will! He recommends the book in a most fervent way as do I. If you don't read at least one of these books your life will be remarkably impoverished.
